Thoughts on Thursday...

First off...Wow, did last week's Thoughts on Thursday strike a nerve. I guess that post brought a lot of sweetened condensed milk lovers out of the closet. Lol !!!

This Thursday...kind of boring, but I know it will bring out the comments.

IRONING !!!

I do the laundry and then put the clothes away. Then each morning or before I need the clothes, I quickly iron outfits for hubby and me. Quick, easy and only a few minutes out of the morning instead of hours ironing everything in one day.

My thinking is...if I wash and dry them, then iron them before I put them away, they will get all squished in the drawer or the closet.

When do you iron...or do you iron at all?

ps...I try to catch the dryer as it stops so they are nice and wrinkle free, but I'm always too busy and I forget. Mine are nice and wrinkled out the dryer!! Too many "irons" in the fire I guess.

Have a great Thursday,
~Karen~

  1. The only thing(s) in my house that get ironed are the patches in my quilt as I'm assembling!

Everything else comes out of the drier, gets folded, or hung. :)

If it's a really nice dress shirt/outfit ... it's going to the dry cleaners and THEY will press it. :)

  2. Ironing!! I just don't mind it. About 30 years ago, my husband bought me a Steam Press. If you don't know what it is, google Steam Press. I love it. I do what you do, then the night before, or in the morning I press what needs to be pressed and I am ready. It takes about 1-2 minutes to press a shirt. It is a time saver on sewing projects too.

My grandson loves it too. He presses his dollar bills ~lol~

  3. The first thing we do every morning is turn the iron on. I think they will get too wrinkled in the closet or drawer. Thank goodness Dear Hubby likes to iron - sometimes even more than I do!

  4. I don't iron, except sewing projects. Luckily my 11yo dd loves it. I use the dryer to get wrinkles out when I plan to wear an outfit that needs it. Living on a ranch we wear wrinkles... the cows don't care

  5. I only iron quilting projects!!! The others DO get caught here as soon as the dryer is finished with them!!!

  6. If you miss the dryer when it stops.. you just turn it back on for a few minutes.. walaaa!! Nice un-wrinkly clothes. If DH needs his work clothes ironed, he knows how it works. He wore a military uniform for YEARS, and needed nice crisp lines on them. I am certain he can work one. On-Off, pretty simple. I only iron my quilty fabric, and a special occasion outfit.. that's all :)

  7. I actually love ironing, its strangely relaxing! I could spend hours ironing everything from socks to bath sheets!
But saying that the only things I iron now are sewing projects and fabric that has been laundered prior to putting away. I catch the things as the dryer stops and if its an ironing item hang it up straight away and it doesn't need ironing!

  8. I'm a stay at home mom and my husband works in a lab - no need to iron as long as I catch the dryer and/or hang the clothes. However, I remember my mom ironing for hours. When we got married I told my husband that if he insisted on buying 100% cotton shirts that he was doing the ironing.

  9. I spend half the year living in a motorhome (hubby & I research national forest & grassland campgrounds) and I don't iron when on the road. But when I get back home, just about everything gets pressed. It's my excuse to watch hours and hours of football!!! Iron and broad is put away off the Super Bowl ;-)

  10. I try to make sure that most of our clothes are iron free. To help remind when clothes should be done in the dryer, I carry a little timer with me. But even so, there I times I turn off the ringing timer and still forget to get the clothes out. Guess that's why they put that fluff cycle on the machine - lol!

  11. Do.not.iron. My aunt taught me to buy only men's shirts that say Wrinkle Free. And yes, I stay in the house listening for that buzzer to nab the things out of the dryer, at least nab the clothes that otherwise I would have to iron, and hang them up right away.

IF I fail to get them out of the dryer and they sit for days (it happens), the next time I wash a load, I take a wet wash cloth or something small out of the finished load, put it into the dryer with my wrinkled mess, give it about 15 minutes and voila! wrinkles gone, hang it up, etc. etc.

Hope this transforms your (not-wanting-to-iron) life as it did mine :)

  12. I hate ironing clothes ... it's so hard to get the pressed seams right where you want them. My Honey irons his own stuff or takes it to the dry cleaner; I don't buy clothes that require ironing at all. I once dated a guy who ironed ALL his clothes, even his jeans and boxer shorts, first thing in the morning before dressing (he used to be in the Navy and attributed his love of order to that). I do love ironing fabric though; it's very soothing, but again, there are no pressing lines to get just perfect like with pants or shirts.

  13. I'm on top of the dryer, as I hate wrinkly clothes.

As to ironing, for my son's uniforms and hubby's work shirts I iron a pile and put them in the closet. Their closets are not full, so they're not packed tight and normally are fine for wearing.

My closet, on the other hand, is packed tight. I usually iron what I need before I wear it...and that's only twice a week...Sunday and Wednesday for church. The rest of the week I'm in jeans and shirts that are folded directly from the dryer...and I'm sorta a freak about how things are folded too...so let's just say, they're usually good to go! =)

  14. My mom taught me to pull the clothes out of the dryer while they're still damp and hang them up to dry. You might have to touch up cotton shirts, but it usually works.

  15. The only thing that gets ironed in my house is the Thanksgiving tablecloth.

  16. I find ironing to be an enjoyable task - when my iron doesn't leak!
How and when I iron depends on how busy I am, so I end up doing both a bunch at once, and some when I need it. I also iron the top sheets and pillowcases after washing. Hubby's dress shirts go to the cleaners, though.

  17. I hardly ever touch an iron...I thought they were for sewing!

  18. I love ironing. Here's why - I have my ironing board adjusted low to where I can iron sitting down. It's such a mindless activity that I can sit in my comfy office chair in the sewing room and let my mind wander!

Although I do prefer pressing my sewing projects over my husband's dress shirts...

  19. My ironing board and iron are always up and ready for use. I iron my jeans, my t-shirts, regular blouses and slacks - always iron my fabric and iron as I go when quilting. I keep a pressing board and small travel iron next to my machine. When I hear people say they don't think they even own an iron, I wonder how they get away with it??? and reading some of the comments, guess I know a little better how.

  20. I do my husbands shirts every other week.. I wash them, dry them, press them, hang them up and forget about them for another two weeks.
My shirts come out of the dryer and onto a hanger...very seldom do I press them as they are knit t-shirts and really who cares what I look like while sewing! lol
I am one of the few who LIKE to iron..I love my iron, love my large ironing surface hubby made for me, love the sound of the "shot of steam"..and the facial I get is an added benefit..

  21. We are always in such a hurry as to not be able to wait for ironing. You are so organized. I wish I could be so. My life is a little mixed chaos and organization. I try to iron once every 3-4 months. hee-hee. that makes for a pretty stuffed closet when they finally get ironed. I like your thinking though. I am going to have to give it a try. BTW, we both have home offices, so ironing is not really that big of a deal. Sweats are worn to this office.

  22. I thought irons were for quilting? Who was it that said 'asking a quilter to iron is like asking Michelangelo to paint your garage"? Oh...yeah..that was 'sewing on a button'. Both work for me! My husband does not like the way I iron his shirts. He has his own iron and board. The rest gets hung up FAST when the drier is done. Case closed.

  23. Last week I talked about my mom, remember?? Well, she HATES ironing!! She just don't iron at all. And I do the same!! Just not for us...

  24. I pretty much only use my iron when I am sewing. I will iron a shirt if absolutely necessary, but I am very hard pressed (no pun intended...ha!) to ever consider it a necessity.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I iron as needed. I'm fortunate to have a sewing room of my own so the ironing board is always up. Drove my MIL crazy...couldn't understand why I didn't want to spend hours ironing after working all day!

  26. Our whole family is military, so we love to iron....I just wouldn't feel comfortable if my cottons weren't pressed. I like the look of a pressed shirt or skirt.....and it only takes a couple of minutes.

  27. The only thing I iron is fabric/ quilt blocks. I used to iron all the time but just no time with working all day, cooking, cleaning and then find time to read and sew.

Irons are bad for you. LOL

  28. I don't iron too many clothes. If I don't get them out of the dryer on time I just turn it back on for a few minutes! If it's really wrinkled then I spritz it w/water before putting it in the dryer....lazy gals ironing! Years ago I got out my ironing board and iron to iron something and my son who was about 5 at the time looked at them and said "mom what's that"? Yea, I'm that bad! Of course I DO iron my fabric when I'm quilting...that's important stuff!

  29. I enjoy ironing on occasion. I hang most all of our clothes out of the dryer, and if it needs a quick press before wearing, I'll do that. We have a combo washer/dryer (we are full-time RVers), and so it's really easy to loose track of time when I put a load in. It doesn't help that there's no buzzer! I love to iron yardage...when new fabric has been washed before sewing. That's a lovely pastime! :)

  30. I make a deal with myself that a couple of shirts, or whatever needs ironing, has to be done before I can do "fun" ironing - for quilting. A friend of mine only spritzes with water after things come out of the dryer. She just smooths the clothes with her hands, and never looks rumply. I used to iron t-shirts, but I've gotten over that. My mom ironed her dish towels!

  31. I do exactly what you do...but sometimes I don't need to iron the clothes before I wear them because they are just fine. I utilize the buzzer on my dryer and try to promptly put the clothes away as soon as it goes off. However, I always have my ironing board set up in the room adjacent to laundry room (for sewing purposes, of course), so it's no big deal to press out a few wrinkles if I need to.

  32. The only thing my iron gets used for is for things I'm creating. Definitely NOT for the purpose for which it was made! If clothing needs ironing, I don't buy it in the first place.

  33. Right out of the dryer fold or hang up! The only thing I iron is my quilting work. If it's something good it goes to the dry cleaner. If my dh needs something ironed, he'll iron it.

  35. we wear t shirts and jeans...no need to iron. ( DH is a lifeguard so his work attire never needs to be ironed ...lucky me )
but I do iron all my quilt fabric

    ReplyDelete
  36. I iron most items...........it is just that the clothes sit in a basket until I get round to it so most ironing is on a 'needs must' basis

  37. Excuse my ignorance and I don't mean to be rude but doesn't anyone have a clothes line outside to hang out the wet clothes and blow around in the fresh air. Yes I iron everything no I don't like ironing much and DH will do his own if I have a slack attack :-) There is one good thing about ironing and that is I get control of the remote when I'm ironing thats the rule.......

  38. I just actually read thru my washing machine manual yesterday and found that I can throw clothing into it and use the steam fresh cycle to de-wrinkle, then hang a few minutes before putting on. Other than that, I am religious downy wrinkle free spray user.

If you have a steam cycle or button on your washer/dryer, you may want to investigate to save some time in the mornings. :)

  39. Every time I do an hours worth of ironing I swear I will do it as it comes off the clothes line next time. Never seems to happen. I like that you just do it as you need it. I quite like ironing actually. It is funny how quilters will stand for hours and iron fabrics and patches but their other ironing is a complete bore:-)

  40. Hi Karen

Our house rule is if it needs hand washing or ironing - don't buy it!!
I do very little clothes ironing but we do like to have nice table linen and you just have to iron that!
    - oh and patchwork of course!
    Cheers

  41. I catch the clothes as soon as the dryer is done and hang right up. I do press my work clothes the night before so ready to put on in the morning. I am like you: I think the clothes get wrinkle some hanging in the closet. But I plain hate ironing except for when I quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  42. For jeans and knit shirts, I set the timer for 10 minutes and hang them while they are slightly damp. Gravity seems to take out the wrinkles. It's not fun if I forget.

  43. I hate ironing! I do my own when needed, hubby does his either in the morning or night before.

  44. I guess I'm strange, because I actually like to iron. But, I try to iron everything at once, once a week. I don't have a place where I can leave the ironing board set up all the time, and it's too much of a hassle to get it in and out. So, I do laundry a couple of times a week, but sit off to the side the things that need ironing, then iron everything once a week. It works for us! My husband used to be in the military and use to iron his own things, but has boycotted it ever since he got out. And I'm just too much of a perfectionist to see him walking around all wrinkly! :)

  45. I iron as little as possible except for quilt piecing. I don't buy anything that isn't wrinkle free. however, if hubby needed ironed shirts, he too them to the laundry for doing. i was awful at it...snort... anyway, nowadays with life being more casual, no ironing for me and all tees and pants are pretty well hung up. If the closet is too crowded...I have too much stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I also iron each morning the clothes I will be wearing that day. My husband does the same.
I find ironing relaxing - seeing wrinkles disappear is therapeutic!!

  47. I don't iron. The way I get things out of the dryer on time is that I set the timer on my iPhone. I used to love to iron but gave it up when the kids came along. I have a clothes iron: have used it twice in 5 years. I have a quilting iron, use it almost daily. ;-)

  48. We began our life in a 12x50 trailer. When you try to put the clothes (and sewing) for 4 people in that space it does no good to iron until you are ready to put it on.

When we moved into our first house I had a walk-in pantry. I kept the ironing board set up in there. I would iron my kids clothes as I woke them up. The warm clothes just made getting up a little better for them.

Married nearly 30 years and all the kids are gone but I still do it as I need it.

  49. Now don't boo and hiss at me, but I iron on a weekly basis. It isn't always the same day, but I like to have everything ironed. I have a really large master closet & store my iron & board in there. I have a section of hanging space where I put all the things that need to be ironed. I like to put outfits together & have them hanging in a special section. I know, I'm kind of strange!

  50. I think ironing as needed is something we get from the experience of many years. My ironing board is always up ready for "as needed".
