Some of the ideas I share on my blog are projects that I've learned from my children…some from my mom and some from my grandmother. One grandmother taught me how to make ornaments from old Christmas cards and the other grandmother taught me how to call a bingo game in the community room of her senior center. Family always makes you so well rounded…a little crafting and a little gambling!! Lol
Back to crafting…
Christmas Card Ornament perfect for your own tree, gift giving or a little decoration on top of a package.
Very easy projects with 6 simple circles. Come on in and see!!
Take all your saved Christmas cards and start cutting circles. With this project you don't have to be as exact with the design on the circle as we were with the canning jar lid project, because color is more important than perfectly centered designs.
You can use anything to trace your circles, but if you want to work with speed and volume, circle punches are the BEST!!
The 2 punches I have pictured below are 2 inches and come in scalloped or plain edge. It's fast and easy to punch out the circles. If you buy the punches in craft stores, wait for a sale or use a coupon.
Here are the 6 circles needed for one ornament with a plain edge.
Here are 6 with a scalloped edge.
To attach the circles, I used my favorite hot glue gun, because it dries in seconds. If you use craft glue, you will need clothes pins or clamps to hold the parts together as it dries.
The first step is to fold each circle in half…design side towards each other.
Fold 6 per one ornament.
Glue two half circles together to start. Make sure you are gluing the backs of the circles together.
So it looks like this.
Add the third circle. Again, always make sure you are gluing the white or backs of the cards together.
At this point, tie a decorative string and lay it across the middle and glue in place. This will be covered with the remaining circles and form the ornament's hanger .
Finish by gluing the remaining 3 circles to the first 3, one after the other.
Quick and easy.
The perfect addition to any tree or gift wrapping.
Such a great way to showcase the beautiful cards and memories we receive from family and friend.
Happy Crafting,
~Karen~
Wow, that is cool. How great to be able to recycle all the cards. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI am loving this one!! I hate throwing them out and sometimes I recycle the front for soldier cards. This idea I love!! Might even make a whole tree with these.
ReplyDeleteHi Karen,
ReplyDeleteI use to do this craft with my Gr. One class...in fact I would set out the precut circles on a table and this was a free time activity!! They loved it!! So all you grandma's and mom's out there...set out the circles and let your little guys fly at it. Works well with birthday cards too!! Thanks for the memories....

Love this one!
ReplyDeleteLove these! We have one (fabric) ornament received as a gift on the tree. The cat has climbed up there multiple times a day to bat at it, which is why we normally just do lights on the tree. I've got a box of old cards that have piled up faster than they've been used as gift tags. Will start making some of these ornaments now, and by next XMas we can fill the tree with cat toys.
ReplyDeleteOh how cute!!! I hate throwing away old cards. I think I am going to start saving mine for my daughter to use in her classroom. Here's another idea. Just thought of it. A wreath!!!
ReplyDeleteKaren, you're amazing and right on time. I was going to recycle all my cards with the recycling this week. We're supposed to get a lot of snow so this is the perfect craft for a cold winter day.
ReplyDeleteI remember doing these as a kid, I was just thinking that it would be really neat if you made a tassel or found some on clearance and had a tassel hanging off the bottom, that could really jazz them up!
ReplyDeleteI have a stack of cards in the queue, waiting for this project. It'll be my "while relaxing with m' baby" project. I think I'll wait to glue them until next year, though, that way I won't have to store the ornaments somehow. I like to cut every circle by hand. Relaxing.
ReplyDeleteHappy highways,
Kelley~
