Tool Time Tuesday...Coat Hook Fix

Happy Tuesday!! I've been doing a little "deep" cleaning before the holidays. You know closet clean outs, going through fall and winter coats, under the bed dust bunnies etc.

Since the weather is changing in our area, I've noticed we have more coats out of the closets and onto the hooks in our back hallway. The hooks are great for the quick coat grab on the way out the door. Here is a picture of the hooks...no big deal, just hooks.

Why am I sharing this with you?

The dreaded coat bump!! Lol

You've all seen it...it's the little hump in the fabric that the hook leaves at the neck of your coat, jacket or sweater.

Here's the Tool Time Tuesday solution.

Tennis Balls!!!

and the tool for the day...your drill.

It drills easily, but start slow so you don't slip.

This size hole is great for thin hooks.

For larger knobbed hooks like these, you may need to cut away some of the ball after you make the smaller hole.

I used snippers. The ball is just rubber, so it's easy.

Just slips on.

Certainly not a fashion statement for the home, but our hooks are pretty much covered with coats all year long.

If you want them to be a fashion statement, you could always paint them or Mod Podge fabric on them.

This is the BEFORE BUMP...

and here's the AFTER BUMP...much better

There still might be a slight bump from the tennis ball, but the ball is larger and certainly not as pronounced as the small bump. The larger bump falls out easier as you wear it too.

This is a small project to help out with the little things in life...it's all in the details, right??

Happy Tuesday,
~Karen~

  4. Yeah, great idea, I often spot my hubbie with a small hump on his back and think, I should do something about that! I think his hump is from the coat hook, well I hope it is ;0) x

  6. Great idea Karen, I have used myself. I used an Exacto knife to do the cutting, worked very well.

  12. Good idea! If there is a tag in the back of the coat you can also put the hook through the tag loop and hang it that way...

  14. Great idea - would be better if we could figure out how to cover the tennis ball with some cute fabric so the gross orange color doesn't show! Any ideas?

  16. So smart! We bought a decorative metal "branch" with birds and pointed hooks on it for the wall outside next to our hot tub...thinking we could hang our towels (and my robe) on it, and when full of towels, it would be real cute art. Well, it IS real cute, but the hooks are pointy as all get out, so I just put a little dab of glue in some wooden beads then put the beads on the pointy hook ends - just like your tennis ball. Works like a charm! And it even looks fine when there's no towels on 'em.

  18. Coming from Sweden where all coats and towels etc come with a hanger, I now add a piece of silk ribbon to our towels and coats.. But teaching my dear husband to use the hanger so he won't get a hump hasn't been easy lol.

  19. Great tip Karen - now have you done one for fixing the humps you get if you hang a sweater on a hanger? I'd love to see that and if you've done it, I missed it. :( blessings, marlene

  20. Another idea that I do, it buy some twill tape and sew hooks in our most used jackets, and vests to create a loop to hang the coats from. Helps a lot with the light and bulky puffy vests that slip off anyway.

    Love this.

  23. A good idea. I simply use a closet hanger to hang the jacket on it and then put the hanger on the hook.
