Thoughts on Thursday...
Alarm Clocks...a necessary evil.
I play mind games with my alarm clock. I set the time 30 minutes ahead, so I can do the math in my head as to what the time REALLY is! Wakes my mind up before my body.
Not to mention, I never really have a sound sleep. I'm always looking at the clock through the night..."oh, it says 2:30, so it's really 2:00. Yay, I still have 3 1/2 more hours to sleep!"
What really gets my goat is the 9 minutes snooze. Every clock I've ever had has been a 9 minute snooze. Why 9?
I think it's the alarm clock companies way of playing math mind games too. "Ok, it's 5:30 am when the alarm rings. I have 9 more minutes til it rings again. If I hit it 2 more times it will ring at 5:39 and 5:48. Perfect...I'm up before 6:00.
Was it a mistake when the first alarm clock was made? It really should have been a 10 minute snooze...much easier to add 10 to any time you set your alarm. Alarm rings at 5:30 am. I can let in ring 2 more times at 5:40 and 5:50. Perfect! I want a 10 minute snooze.
What better way to solve the Alarm Clock Snooze button mystery than to ask the blogging world.
Are all alarm clock snooze buttons 9 minutes and do you hate your alarm clock too?
and another thing. Why do I still wake up at 5:30 on the weekends when I don't need an alarm? The silver lining there is...no 9 minute snooze.
Always look for the positive in something.
Happy Thursday,
~Karen~

I know what you mean about the 9 minute snooze! But, it you look at it a different way, if you push snooze 5 times, you get another 45 minutes! I gave up and use my cell phone, which has different time selections. Mine is 10 minutes. It's set for 6:30, and I usually hit snooze once. If that doesn't work, my iPod is my backup alarm. It's set for 6:45, and has a Klaxon for an alarm. Even I can't sleep through that one...8-) Oh, and like you, I wake up waaay too early on the weekends.
ReplyDeleteIn the digital world '9' is the last single digit. That's my theory anyway.
ReplyDeleteWaking early on weekends offers time to do all the fun stuff we don't get to do on weekdays. ;-)
I'm a repeat snooze button offender too! I use my iPhone as my alarm and am perplexed that it also has a 9 minute snooze. With all that the iPhone is capable of doing, you'd think it would let me customize the snooze time.
ReplyDeleteMy alarm clock snooze is only 5 minutes. On weekdays I have to get up at 6, and always drag myself out of bed. On the weekends, I don't need an alarm, but I am always up at 6 anyways! So frustrating! lol
ReplyDeleteLinda, that is what my son does, plus he has the tv come on at another time!! lol
ReplyDeleteI hate the '9' min snooze too. Hard to calculate when you're half in and half out of la la land. I don't use my alarm anymore - it's either music or recently I have my tv come on, and I 'listen' to the news..
I hate the snooze feature, period! My husband wants the alarm to go off and then the snooze. I get mad if I am still asleep when the alarm goes off. I get up & move to the couch if needed to avoid hearing it again. I think they are a terrible way to start the day. Why would I want to hear it again?
ReplyDeleteBut...ours is 9 minutes. Makes no sense to me either.
Oh my goodness, I do the same thing! And I must use snooze - at least twice - LOLOL! The clock in my car is 20 minutes fast too.
ReplyDeletethat is so funny ... I set my clock 45 min ahead. I can get up at 7:00 ... but no way for 6:15!!!
ReplyDeleteLOL I do the same thing! It goes off at 6:30 but its really 6 so I know I have half hour to keep hitting the snooze before I have to get up!
ReplyDeleteMine is a 4 minute snooze. I used to use it... repeatedly. I felt worse than if I just got up. I challenged myself to stop using the alarm. I haven't used my snooze button in 2 years. I also usually wake up about 5 minutes before the alarm goes off. I think that is because I hate waking up that way.
ReplyDeleteMy old one had a longer snooze. My current alarm clock has a five-minute snooze! Seriously? That is SO not long enough to qualify as a snooze!
ReplyDeleteAll the alarm clocks I've ever had were 9 minute snoozes too. And I too, wake up without an alarm on the weekends - at the time I am to get up on weekdays - where I need an alarm to do so. Ugh! I turn on the news to hear the weather and traffic - thus dictating how many times I hit the snooze...
ReplyDeleteI love my alarm clock. It gradually turns on my bedside lamp to simulate the sun rising. It also has a choice of radio or alarm (any combination). I find that the room brightening makes a huge difference in how I wake up, and I normally only need one snooze - not three. My snooze is also 9 mins.
ReplyDeleteMy alarm has a 5-minute snooze and it will only snooze once. Therefore, I best get up or it could be really bad...
ReplyDeleteCan't say I've every owned a 9-minute snooze alarm clock...not sure why the would choose 9.
Here's to sleeping 'in' in a couple of days.
I was just talking about the 9 minutes this morning and who in the heck ever thought up the 9? Why not 10? Too funny that your post is about this today.
ReplyDeleteThe 9 minutes has to do with how many gears were in the original alarm clocks--then it became pretty much industry standard.
ReplyDeleteExactly my opinion too...why 9 minutes? That makes NO sense AT ALL! Who decided to make a snooze 9 minutes and not add just that one little minute...I guess I'm just OCD and like even numbers! LOL!
ReplyDeleteMy new alarm clock has an 8 minute snooze and I always feel robbed.
ReplyDeleteI am a repeat snoozer. I count backwards though. I have a 9 min snooze on my clock so if I want to get up at 6:00 and I want to snooze twice, then I set the clock for 5:42. Then it beeps again at 5:51 and then again at 6:00. :) I'm just a bit OCD ;)
ReplyDeleteOMG, I thought I was the only person who played these games. My alarm is 1 hour and 20 minutes ahead. I didn't reset after the time change and have been an hour ahead ever since. My normal game was only 20 minutes ahead, but I really like having an hour to sleep. My husband hates this and can't understand the mental game I play.
ReplyDelete:D I have never been able to wake up to an alarm clock - I have slept through all of them. I always tell myself that I have to get up at such and such time, and most times I wake up then. I WILL wake up to dogs barking or if someone is staring at me! That will wake me up so quick - the kids could come in and play or do whatever, but as soon as they started staring at me, well, my eyes would just fly open :)
ReplyDeleteI love my alarm clock, it wakes me at just the right time, it has never let me down and I have had it for 31 years...my husband. He has his alarm clock built in if you tell him what time you want to get up he will wake you 5 mins before every single time , have know idea how he does it and nor does he but it works and that the main thing.

ReplyDeleteThe ihome ia5 iPod alarm lets you change the length of the snooze from I think zero to fifteen minutes anywhere in between and it will let you wake and sleep to your iPod. You can also shut off the time display so it only shows when the alarm goes off forcing you to ignore it through the night. And if you have an iPhone or iPod touch you can download an app that lets you set it from a docked iPod. I got it mostly for a dock for my iPhone but I'm loving it as an alarm.
