I look at quilting rulers every single time I go into a sewing/quilting store...every time! I have a 6 inch wide by 24 inches long quilt ruler. Why it's only 6 inches wide and not 6 1/2 inches when most quilters cut strips or blocks with the extra 1/2 inch seam allowance is beyond me.
Well, look at this...Ahhhhh!!! Can you hear the angels singing?!!
See that measurement on the label...6.5" x 24.5"? Yay!
I hope you can see the color change on this ruler. See that pinkish colored edge on the top and the right? Well, that's the extra 1/2 inch.
The ruler can be flipped over so you can use any of the measurements. The main black lines can be either 1 inch or 1 and 1/2" inch.

So, if you are cutting 2 and 1/2 inch strips, you would line up the edge of your fabric on the 2 1/2" darker cutting line. Easier for me to see the darker line than the lighter line in between.
On the other side, it's still the regular 1", 2", 3" on the darker lines.
The markings are on the long side and the short side too, so you can hold the ruler in any direction. I just love the fact that I can cut a 6 and 1/2 inch block with this ruler!

Have a great Monday

I love that the 1/2" is slightly pink. Makes it really easy to get the ruler oriented correctly.
ReplyDeleteWow, that IS an awesome ruler! And you got it at Walmart, you say? I'll have to look there, I WANT this!
ReplyDeleteThat is an improvement on my old Fiskars that is the same size. Love that shading for the 1/2" - hhmm, my old one is getting a little faded...
ReplyDeleteI started quilting last June and this was one of the first rulers I purchased from Joanns... def. not new :) But Im glad its new to you and making your life that much better! :)
ReplyDelete6 1/2" is my fav. size too. Omnigrid makes a 6 1/2" x 24", but I've only been able to find it online at Joann's. I had looked in several stores without success, so when I saw it online (and 50% off with free shipping above a minimum price) I brought two - one for me and one for my mom (ahem, that would be for me to use at my mom's) plus a few other things she was looking for :-).
ReplyDeleteI figured I was the only one who looked at the rulers every time I go into a craft store!! I will definitely check out my local Wal-mart and see if I can find this one.
ReplyDeleteactually I have this same exact ruler!!! I got it in a quilting starter kit that came with the mat, the rotary cutter, and this ruler! It makes everything so easy! I love it! And I bought it at Jo Anns just like Tiffany did!
ReplyDeleteI have the old rules and I was wondering why there wasn't one 6-1/2 wide. That's an answer to my prayers.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! How handy. I'll be looking for this one on my next trip to WM! Thanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog over the weekend, and I'm having so much fun reading your old posts!
What a great improvement. I have always wondered the same thing. Thanks for pointing this out.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a perfect size ruler. The numbers on some of my rulers are completely worn off. Hummmm......... maybe time for a replacement :-)
ReplyDeleteI just bought one of those, mostly because after years of use, my old one never seemed to cut a straight line, guess I hold my rotary cutter too close??? To be honest I didn't notice the 6 and1/2 inch measure, but that will come in handy.

This one is my all time favourite ruler and I paid a lot more than $12 for it, I think it cost me around $A40 but worth every cent. I want them to make one half the length now, the pink shading is amazingly great to use, so easy and quick to add a half inch....

I love the idea of the 1/2 inch being pink. I would hate to tell you how many times I have picked up my 6.5" ruler and cut thinking it was my 6" one. That other color would have helped tremendously.
ReplyDeleteMmm ... your old ruler is very revealing ... they don't make them like that anymore! Thankfully!
ReplyDeleteNow I need a reason to buy a new ruler, but unfortunately I have already replaced my 6 inch one!

Glad you found it, but all my rulers over the last 20 years have had the 1/2inch included.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy

I have a smaller ruler that is 6.5 square but I love that they shaded the .5 part. I'll have to look into that. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have that size at our Walmart. Will have to look around at the bigger ones.
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite ruler; I have 2 :)
ReplyDeleteThat is the very ruler I have. I LOVE IT! I love the thin black lines. I love the extra 1/2 inch. I am glad that you found it. Happy cutting!
ReplyDeleteI've owned a 6.5 in. wide x 24 in. Quilter's Rule ruler for at least 20 years!
ReplyDeletewow! I've never seen that. It's great. I'll have to keep my eye out for it. I wonder why it's taken so long.
ReplyDeleteI have that same ruler! I got it several years ago at JoAnn. I love the shaded extra 1/2 inch.
ReplyDeleteI teach beginner quiltmaking lessons and always encourage students to buy a 6-1/2" X 24" ruler and a 6-1/2" X 6-1/2" ruler. Omnigrid makes both of them. Also, one of my favorite rulers is the 8" X 24" Masterpiece ruler. Glad you found one you like.
