If you sew, then most likely you've made a decorative pillow. It's an easy project...sew two squares of fabric right sides together, leave an opening to turn right side out, then sew the opening closed.
Although sewing the pillow is easy, getting the opening to cooperate so you can sew it closed is another thing. Today, I thought I would share a quick tip for sewing that pesky opening of a pillow.
This is a picture of the sewn pillow...I know, looks like nothing, but it gets better.
Here's the opening for turning right side out and for stuffing in the pillow.
Now for the tip...along the whole edge of the opening, fold back your seam allowance and iron it open on one side.
Here's one side ironed open.
Now flip it over and do the same thing.
Both edges are folded back.
Now you can turn it right side out.
See the seams all neatly ironed and ready for you to sew. No fussing trying to fold over the seam allowance and pin it at the same time.
It pins easily and now you are ready to hand or machine stitch this closed.
If you want to hand sew the opening closed...click HERE for a tutorial on how to sew an invisible stitch.
Happy Sewing,

ReplyDeleteGreat tip!
ReplyDeleteOf course! :) thank you.
ReplyDeleteI love this! I'll have to use it for the Christmas pillows going out for gifts. For mine around the house, because I have so many animals and have to wash the covers often, I have to use an envelope type closure.
ReplyDeleteGood Evening Karen, This is exactly how I make my cushions. Using the iron to straighten the seams makes the job a lot easier. I also steam iron the seams if I am making an envelope cushion cover, one which I want to remove and wash on a regular basis. This is a great tip for everyone. Best Wishes Daphne
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this tutorial. Closing that opening has been the downfall of many pillows for me. Now I think I can master this part.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I have never thought of doing this. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat looking pillow. When I was learning to sew, someone told me the difference between a professional look and a home made look was to iron EVERY seam, AS I SEWED IT! It doesn't seem;) like it would make a difference, but it sure does. It takes more time, but you'll be glad.
ReplyDeleteHi Karen,
ReplyDeleteI must have missed it; are you doing your Sew Darn Crafty linky party anymore? I've looked the last two weeks and haven't found it.
