Tool Time Tuesday...Quilt Ruler Suction Handle

Happy Tuesday Everyone!!  Today's Tool Time is not so much a tutorial, but more of a "fabulous find". You all know my 2 favorite stores are fabric stores and hardware stores. What I try to do is combine both loves into a TTT post.

Well, take a look at this beauty that I found in a Harbor Freight Tools store. ( I have no affiliation with the store, just sharing my "finds").

I know what you're thinking...what the heck is that?

For the normal construction worker, it's a great tool to suction to windows, doors, mirrors etc to carrying things around.

Two large suction cups lock down securely onto glass and then you can use the handle.

Tah Dah !!!! It suctions to a large quilt ruler.

Great handle for picking up the ruler from the fabric...

and the large suction cup areas provide equal pressure across the ruler when you press on the handle, so no slipping of the ruler.

I know the suction cups are large, but you can still see the lines on the ruler just under the handle if you cut this way. See my finger pointing to the line?

or you can easily see the marking on your cutting mat too.

This handle is the best purchase. I just love the ease of picking up the ruler with a handle.

Here's the BEST part...it was $5.99. AMAZING!!!

I bought it in the store, but click HERE for the link I found to their site! There is a single handled one too for square rulers. I need that one too. They didn't have it in the store we were in.

Hope you love this idea. Let's keep this our little secret from Harbor Freight. If they find out we're using their tools for sewing, they might raise the price! LOL

Have a great Tuesday,
~Karen~

  1. No HF here but I have a similar one from Amazon. The funny thing is, it was made for people to use in the bath for support. My dd just broke her arm a couple of weeks ago and suddenly this handle, which has served me so well as a ruler grip, is now helping my daughter in the shower. I love that I already had something we needed (it happens a lot though-I have a lot of things in my craft room).

  2. I get 45mm blades for my rotary cutter from Harbor Freight--they're called "Carpet Cutter Replacement Blades" and they cost $2 for 2!

  4. And their rotary cutting blades (for carpet cutters) are perfect for quilt rotary cutters too - at a fraction of the price! But that secret is already out - the last time I was there to buy some, they'd had a run of quilters in and they were out of stock!

  7. Great idea. I've seen these used in fabric shops, but I think they are way more expensive. Great idea on using C clamps for quilts to from Rebecca. We have HF here, but it's way across town. I'll have to go by there sometime.

  8. Harbor Freight kinda got a bad rep from our small group when we all bought 45mil cutting blades there. The blades weren't all consistently good quality. But, I'll get this suction gripper thingy and show 'em. Betcha they all run to HF again. Thanks for your fun blog.

  9. Going to look for a Harbor Freight close to me, what great ideas. Isn't it strange how much more expensive these are if painted pink and in a quilt shop?

  12. What a great find!! I have a harbor freight here in Orlando, we call it the man store. I went there once and bought a rolling tool bag and used it for my sewing machine to take to classes etc. I think it was $13. Here is a link, its army green, I need to buy another as mine is worn out, the bottom could more stable, maybe by adding a lightweight piece of wood acrylic.
I recently purchased some 1 inch strap clips and slidey things to make my dog a cute harness. I was lucky as Joann's had a 50% off sale on the notions wall, but I still paid $4 for both pieces. I need to make 4 more as I have 6 dogs. So I was in the camping section at Walmart to purchase the carabiner you suggested for carrying your bags, I love it, and use to hook my water bottle on my purse when at the festivals. But right by the carabiner, what do I see 1 inch strap clips with the adjustable slidey thing for 58 cents??? They were to replace them on backpacks, I got them home and found 2 of each in the packages, so not only both pieces for 58 cents, but 2 sets!!! So if you need to make a dog harness or anything that takes the strap clips and slidey things hit Walmart's camping section.

  16. LOVE it! I don't quilt anymore since my Grandma isn't around to guide me, but this is awesome for all of my crafting and the large photo prints I'm often cutting.

  17. Not to be a Negative Nellie but I hate these handles. Why? because they lift your shoulder and arm up in a higher position and after cutting for a while, it leads to pain because you are not cutting in an ergonomic position. My boss at the quilt shop kept insisting I use one while cutting until I complained to workman's safety and they explained either I should stop using it or she should lower the cutting table but if you lower the cutting table then your cutting arm is out of whack. I think the concept of having a gripping handle is good but they are just too high. So, user beware. I always love the handy things you find for us Karen and really appreciate it :)

  21. We love Harbor Freight! My husband was pleasantly surprised when I asked him Tuesday if we could stop there on the way home from an appointment. I got the double and single one and they both work well. I'm going to take them for show & tell at my quilt guild meeting next week. Thanks for posting. Tool Time Tuesdays Rock!

  25. I bought an adjustable stool from Harbor Freight. It swivels, has a saddle seat and bling on the skirt of the seat (it's was supposed to be a Harley motorcycle mechanic stool, but we know better). It is so comfortable for my back. No, it wasn't cheap, sorry. Did I mention that it has heavy duty roller feet and glides on my carpet?

    1. I love those seats, I brought one some years ago to clean and paint baseboards. If the wheels should ever come off (mine did) don't throw away get the Mover's dolly and screw the seat to it. Real sturdy.
