Blogging Tip...How to Add Pages or Tabs to the Top of Your Blog

Hi everyone. I have started to update all my older blogging tip posts to show pictures with the new blogger dashboard...

Today's feature is how to add pages to the top of your blog. Pages are stand alone posts that you can feature certain things. You can add...
  • FAQ...frequently asked questions
  • an about me page
  • contact info
  • family info
  • what your blog is about
  • sewing tutorials
  • cooking
  • advertising
  • so many other ideas too!!

Page features...
  • Pages are permanent, static and are always there, unlike a blog post that is incorporated within in your blog and are found by the date of the post...in chronological order.
  • you may want to have a page about something important, so visitors won't have to search your blog for that post
  • The "Home" button brings you back to the most current blog post. The "Home" button just appears when you add the page gadget
  • you write your pages just like a blog post
  • edit and change them as much as you'd like

If you haven't noticed Pages before...here's what my Pages look like under my Title. Little gray tabs of specific info.

Let's get started...
  • first, go to your dashboard and click LAYOUT

Click ADD GADGET...

Scroll through the pop up screen and find PAGES and ADD them...

Now from your dashboard again click PAGES (or from the left side of the layout page, there is also the PAGES section)

This is what mine looks like, because I already have PAGES added.

Click NEW PAGE and the choices are BLANK PAGE or WEB ADDRESS

Once you have added pages, click the drop down box for where you want your pages to show...top of blog (like mine) or side bar.

Click on EDIT in each page to write or edit.

This is what my ABOUT ME page looks like when I edit it or change it. It's like a regular post.

See the gear on the far right for OPTIONS? Click on that for options on THAT PAGE.

Here are the settings for my pages, but you can change yours as you'd like.

Now PART 2 OF PAGES...fonts, colors, separator lines etc...

Go to dashboard and click TEMPLATE...

Under the picture of your blog, click CUSTOMIZE (circled in red)

On the left side, go to ADVANCED.

PAGES are Called TABS in this design feature.

Here you can change the font style and text color and selected color (explained below)

TABS BACKGROUND lets you change the color around each tab or page title. I've chosen TRANSPARENT, so there isn't any color at all except my "Selected" color is gray

Here is a close up of the color choices.

SELECTED COLOR means if your readers scroll over a page title that color will appear as the "selected" color.

Scroll over mine and you'll see what I mean...mine are gray.

Have fun with your pages!! Hope this helps!

Take care,
~Karen~

  7. Karen, thanks for the blog lesson. I've been wanting to do this. I do have a question, though. Is there a way to make new posts show up on a certain page? For instance, if you write a post about organization in the future, how does it end up on the 'Organization' page?

The blog buddy posts are a great help, thanks again.

I have an "about me" graphic I want to put in my side bar, and I know how to do that once the image is on the blog, but I want to put it on my "about me" page to stay and link from there, but I can't figure out how to get the image onto that page and not my front main page. 37. I love your blogging tips page. I have been trying to follow several of your instructions but my screens look different than yours. Are these images in your posts from an older version or am I doing something wrong?

I try to relate them to my version but sometimes I can't make it work! :(

  38. Thank you so much for the great tips! They have been very helpful as I a "new blogger". I too have had some trouble navigating because my screens look different but with trial and error I am slowly adding things. Thank you again, your instructions have been a helpful guide.

  40. I am feeling quite the idiot......I read the labels tips this morning and applied them to my blog....Thank You. I have pages already, but if I move them to the top....only like 3 show up and I don't know know how to have rows of them. I have read this tip sheet. Your pictures 4 - 7, does not look like mine. Also, how do add the pictures boxes to your pages?

Thank you so much for your tips

  41. Thanks for your tips I do have a question. Any idea how to get back to the old blogger design? I have the new version and I can create a page but only one post per page. I am new to all this and I think pages are making me crazy. I tried blogger help but it wasn't any.

    Thanks again.

  42. Hi Karen - this is such a great blog! i am just starting a blog and this is just what i needed. Just a quick question do you know how to link a blog to a couple of pages if the blog is relevant to more that one tab? x

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hi Karen, thanks for your tips. I have added the pages and now I can't work out how to link my existing posts to a page. I haven't done much with my blog but I think I would do more if I didn't find blogger so hard to work with. Do you think you would be able to put up a post to explain the next step with pages?

  47. Oh Golly! I have a way of making mountains out of molehills. I have added Tabs to the top of my blog. I understand about customizing fonts, etc., but before I get to doing that I am stuck on how to point my posts to the correct Tabs. Here is where I am at:

    http://iweararedhat.blogspot.com/

i.e., When I click on Crafts, how do I pull up all my Posts that I gave the label Crafts? Make sense?

  48. Oh, P.S.

I am afraid you are my favorite Go To person. I came across your site a couple of months ago, but I have been learning how to transfer my VHS tapes to DVD and onto my laptop. That's another story. But I have just glanced at a couple of your Tabs, and love your blog. Thanks soooooo much for your tutorials and for sharing.

  52. I've followed your tute on adding tabs. I want to add my links in one tab. How do I add buttons IN the page so someone can click on them and get whisked off to that blog? I'm making progress, but can't quite make that jump. I'm sure I've added working buttons to my blog before, but can't remember how I did that.
