Oldie, But A Goodie...Homemade Donuts

I made these yummy donuts when the girls had friends over one night this summer. Our house is famous for these donuts. Their friends ask for them ALL the time. Not the healthiest snack, but a great once in a while treat.

I remember my mother always making these when I was little too, so I know this is an oldie, but a goodie!

For hot fresh donuts, all you need is a tube of these biscuits...Pillsbury (the camera flash kind of blocked out the name) or any store brand buttermilk biscuit. Sorry for the dark pictures...my kitchen is in the center of the house, so there's not a lot of natural light.

I use the top of a salt shaker to make the donut hole.

Separate all the biscuits...

Press the salt shaker top into each.

and here you have one donut and one donut hole!

I use an electric skillet, so I can control the temperature of the oil. Vegetable oil usually set at 350* - 375*.

Cut all the biscuits while the oil is heating up.

Carefully slide in the donuts 5-6 at a time. Too many at one time cools the oil down. Cook 1-2 minutes on one side and...

Carefully flip over and cook for another minute or so...until lightly browned.

Take out and drain on paper towel for a second then pop them into a paper bag filled with sugar. I used a bowl of sugar so you could see them.

Toss in white sugar, cinnamon sugar or sprinkle with powdered sugar. We've also used Nutella, the chocolate hazelnut spread. Those are yummy too.

There's a trick with the donut holes. Carefully place them in the oil. Let them cook for a second or 2 and them flip them over even though they are not browned yet.

If you fully cook them on one side first, they puff up so much they won't turn over in the pan.

Keep turning them until both side are golden brown. See that little one in the picture all by itself. That little devil wouldn't turn over so one side stayed lighter.

Here's a quick and delicious plate of donuts. An inexpensive treat, especially great for the cooler temperatures coming up this fall.

It's a MUST that you eat these warm with a big glass of cold milk!

Enjoy!

  9. Karen, you are killing me!!!!!! We don´t have that around here. I HAVE to ask this...now that the girls are not there...are you eating that whole thing by yourself??!!! Wait for me, it can take me a couple of days to get there but I am dying to try that!!! haha!
On the other hand the picture of the Pillsbury can brought memories to me. I remember when I first got to the States and tried to open one of those cans, for some reason (later I read it was suppoused to be like that)it just almost exploded in front of my eyes!!! It started to grow like a monster (to me) and I was horrified. Not for long. When I tasted the biscuits I fell in love with them.

  10. I found this recipe a while back and have been making them on special occasions for the kids since, and we LOVE them. The kids have fun helping cover them in sugar and they are AMAZING! Too good really, because I can't stop myself from eating WAY too many of them. :) I especially like to make them with the biscuits that pull apart into flakes. YUM...going to have to make some this weekend. :)

  15. Karen I am almost 61yr. old (gee thats' hard to say) anyway my Mom
used to make these when I was a

any then. Mom always put powdered
sugar on them and they were soooo
    good. Thanks for bringing back
    memories on my Mom's birthday,she
passed on 20yr ago. I will have
to make some for my grandchildren.

  19. We made these many, many years ago at home. We always shook powdered sugar over them.

My dad also made 'fried pies' and I absolutely love them. Does anyone have a recipe for them. He used dried fruit in the center and they were fried in a cast iron skillet.

  26. I'm not much of a donut fan, but plain glazed or sugared are my favorites. I also like donut holes :) Shall have to try this!

  27. Having made real donuts from scratch, I'm getting just a little creeped out over the idea of canned biscuit donuts...but I must say it looks like a fun, quick and easy treat that I am fairly certain my kids would totally love to help make and eat! I just might have to try it! You are such a bad influence, Karen! Keep it up!

  29. NEVER heard of this...I will be making them when Jeff comes home- Cindy is not eating anything even remotely sugary until AFTER the wedding, so maybe I'll make them at the brunch the day after the ceremony.....if I can wait that long, LOL
(We did make fried dough -pizza- and put sugar and cinnamon on it-when I was a kid- about a hundred years ago)

  37. My husband DEMANDS them from time to time...he likes them rolled in 10X sugar. I'll have to try the cinnamon sugar for myself. I usually make them when oldest grandson (16) here to help me he dredges them in the sugar while I do the frying.

  41. Yum! We've made these but we don't bother with the holes. We just make solid round donuts. I'm too lazy to make holes.

  42. I always made these for my kids when they were young. We would have a "decorate" bar... different frostings and sprinkles. It was messy but yummy and fun! They loved it!

  43. These Biscuits are also good this way. If you ever have a fish fry, after you finish frying the fish, drop these whole into the hot oil. They swell up and are Delicious.
