The Best Apple Crisp Recipe...Ever!!

Nothing says autumn more than a dish of warm apple crisp. I've been making apple crisp for years using different recipes (including my mom's) and have never found one that we all loved (sorry mom). This past week, I tried a recipe I found on Allrecipes and it is not only easy, it is perfection. My family loves a crunchy topping and a soft apple filling and this recipe delivers both. It just moved up to #1 at my house!

Apple Crisp...

This recipe is one of the easiest. My least favorite part of any crisp recipe is cutting in cold butter into the flour and oats to make the crumble. This recipe uses melted butter!! Alleluia!!

Here's the recipe below, but if you want to see the original...click here for Allrecipes site.

Apple Crisp

Apple mixture

3 pound bag of apples, peeled, cored and sliced. I always use Gala or Macoun apples.
(the recipe calls for 10 cups of apples, but the 3 pound bag was perfect...no measuring!!
1 cup white sugar
1 Tablespoon flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup water

Topping

1 cup quick cooking oats
1 cup all purpose flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup butter (one stick), melted

Directions...

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place sliced apples in a 13x9 pan. Mix white sugar, flour and cinnamon and sprinkle over apples and coat them well. Pour water in pan.

In a separate bowl, mix all topping ingredients together. Spread crumble mixture evenly over apples.

Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Serve warm or cold. Warm is the best with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream!!

Enjoy!!

Another gadget that I have been using most all my married life is this wonderful tool...an apple peeler. I don't even know where I purchased it, but I never make an apple pie or crisp without it.

You attach it to your counter or table with the twist up tension plate. You simply pull back on the main arm, attach the apple in the core area and turn away. The blade goes up against the apple and peels it as it's traveling through another blade that cores and slices it. One motion peels, slices and cores it!

I was thinking about making a quick video the next time I make a pie or crisp to show just how this little beauty works! We'll see how it goes...not much of a film maker... Lol

  1. Tis the season, for sure Karen! We have gone to the orchard the past two weekends to pick apples but none of them ended up in baked goods! They are so delicious right off the tree that we just ate them as whole fruit! YUM! I do love a good apple crisp on a cool fall day though, and this one looks delicious! We even turned on our heat today for the first time this season, just to test it, but then decided to leave it on because it was so chilly in the house....welcome to fall in New England!

  5. I've been hungry for apple baked something ... trying this tonight. We turned our furnace on this morning - usually not till Thanksgiving (Canada) next weeked. After radiation this summer (for breast cancer) I can't keep warm once I get a draft and its plenty "drafty" right now.

  6. Thank you for posting the recipe. I'll have to give it a try. I have a peeler thingy collecting dust in the garage!

My mom used to make the quickest apple crisp whenever we had unexpected company. It was a good recipe because it used ingredients always on hand:

    1 can apple pie filling
    1 stick butter
    1 cup flour
1 cup sugar (you can cut down this amt.)
1/2 cup rolled oats (quick or regular)
    1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Spread the apple pie filling in a 9" x 9" greased square pan (8" x 8" works, too). In a bowl, using 2 knives, cut the butter into the flour, sugar, oats, and cinnamon, until the butter is pea-sized. Sprinkle on top of filling in pan. Bake at 350 for about 1 hr. or until golden. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream on top. This is also good cold for breakfast, lol!

Mom would always time this to go in the oven when any meat she was cooking was about half-way done, so the crisp would be done & still warm by dessert time. It can take an oven up to 375 if needed, but shorten the time.

  9. I've been looking for a good Apple or fruit Crisp recipe too. I will surely try this. I have the same apple peeler-corer-slicer tool from Pampered Chef about 10 years ago and although it makes quick work, it's very messy. My hubby made me a little 'table' for it to clamp to so I can place it in a large pan to catch all the juice, peels, apple, etc. It's 3 sides of a box.made with wood.

  12. We have the apple curly whirly thing too, but I can't be bothered to make crumble with the rubbing the butter into the flower business - I never thought of melting the butter! Thank you!!

  14. When I saw this post I knew it would only be a matter of time until I made it and boy am I glad I did. This is so good, juicy, a nice crunch topping and just the right amount of sweetness. I cut the recipe in half because I knew I would eat most of it. This is a keeper.
