Spray Painting Christmas Ornaments…Old to New

I know it's only the beginning of November, but I have been working on Christmas for the past few weeks. I have learned over the years that I need to do things early and not wait to the last minute. I decorate 12 trees for every room in the house and it's a labor of love.

I love using all my decorations over and over in different ways each year. If you use something in a new way or in a different room, it seems like you have a whole new look. I also like creating a new themed tree by using things I already have, but buy a few new things to add to it and make it spectacular!!

I've always wanted to have a red and aqua colored tree. I have a ton of different red ornaments, but no aqua, so here's what I've come up with! I already had that fabric too, so maybe a tree skirt will be in the making.

A box of old plastic ornaments and a $3.59 can of spray paint!!

Let the spray painting begin…

I set up a make shift rack in the garage. It's just a pvc pipe resting on cans and crates. It makes it easier to spray paint and then they hang to dry.

One tip…you may need to put a glove on the hand you are not spraying with to hold the top of the ornament while you are spraying.

Here is the before and after. Make sure you buy GLOSS paint to give it that shiny appearance.

Put on one very light coat and then add more light coats as needed. The paint will drip off a little, but I was ok with it because they'll be in the tree and you won't see it any way.

I didn't care about the gold top when I was spraying either, but if you do, you'll have to tape that off.

Here's the paint I used. The picture above is a little bluer, but the true color is in the first and last pictures.

I just love how they came out and can't wait to put together a tree!!

I hope you can add a little spray paint to your holidays too!!

  5. Well why didn't I ever thinks of that. Many of my glass balls have paint chipping off of them and to spray paint them would be so much cheaper than buying new ones!

  6. Super idea, Karen. I love how you plan ahead so well. I don't think about decorating until about the first of December. I only do one tree. I guess I have low expectations! ha!

  8. 12 trees for every room of the house? Surely you mean 12 trees total...1 for each room of the house!! Otherwise, I'm exhausted just thinking about it! HA! Super cute ornaments!

  11. the best thing about this idea is the color switch. I get tired of the same color year after year and this is an inexpensive way to switch it up. thanks!!
