Recycled Sweatshirt Apron…One Minute of Sewing!

Hi everyone! This week, I posted a tutorial for making a scarf made from my daughter's sweatshirts that I've collected from school, dance and college. If you want to see that post, you can click HERE.

When I was cutting out the fronts of the sweatshirts for the designs, I left the pouch pockets intact. You know I love anything that's already sewn and one step away from being up cycled to something else.

Well, here's the new sweatshirt apron!!

You only have to sew 2 lines of stitching and that's it. If you don't sew, you could use an iron on seam or even hot glue it in place! Come in to see how easy…

This is the scarf I made for Kelsie.

The red sweatshirt block is what I made the apron from.

I cut out the design from the top section for the scarf and left the pocket in one piece with as much of a top edge as I could leave.

I also cut the side seams to have as much fabric on the sides of the pocket as possible.

I used a quilt ruler to clean up the top edge, but you can just eye this too.

I used a cotton twill ribbon that I saved from a set of sheets that I bought. It was wrapped around the package.

Measure enough ribbon to sew across the top of the apron and have the ends long enough to wrap around your waist and tie off.

Pin in place.

Sew along the top just inside the edge and then sew along the bottom edge.

Two quick lines of sewing.

Done!

This apron is perfect to wear for any job around the house…

  • picking up things around the house that need to go in other rooms…just tuck them in the pocket
  • cleaning the house…tuck all you dust cloths or paper towels in there too
  • sewing and crafting…great to hold your scissors or rotary cutters so they don't get buried under all your fabric.
  • oh yeah, cooking too!!

Once you cut up all those sweatshirts, you can have an apron in every color for every day of the week!!

Enjoy!!

  6. This is such a GREAT idea!! I love it. It wouldn't take long to think of more good uses for this little apron. And the scarf must be so wonderfully, toasty warm. Thanks for sharing. This is definitely a keeper.
