Block of the Month Club #5...Jacob's Ladder

Hi everyone! Welcome to another block for the Block of the Month Club. I was a little behind, so I'm catching up with a few tutorials in a row this month.

If you're new to my BOM Club, you can join us at anytime. This is a "no pressure" club. I will be sharing a block pattern each month for you to make. When you  feel like you have made enough and want to make a quilt with your blocks, then you can do it whenever you'd like.

All the blocks in the club are 12-1/2 inches (unfinished measurement), so you can make anything from a king size quilt, to a throw blanket, baby quilt, wall hanging, candle mat or table runner.

The blocks I share are older patterns that are not copyrighted, but if you change up the fabrics and you'll be amazed at how different your blocks will look. You can make these blocks with modern fabrics, brights, solids, vintage, baby prints, novelty fabrics, all florals...the list is endless. Just have fun with it!!

Today's block is Jacob's Ladder...

All seams in all the blocks are sewn with a scant 1/4 inch. You can click HERE in the first block tutorial for an explanation of scant. Just scroll down a bit for the TIP.

Here are the squares you will need to cut...

• 2 dark squares at 5 inches
• 2 light squares at 5 inches
• 10 dark squares at 2-1/2 inches
• 10 light squares at 2-1/2 inches

The 5 inch squares are used to make 4 Half Square Triangles that have a measurement of 4-1/2 inches unfinished size.

You can make the Half Square Triangles however you'd like, but you can click HERE for a tutorial I shared on my blog with the measurements need for this block.

The tutorial explains (like the picture below) how 2 squares of fabric will give you 2 HST. You will do this 2 times for the 4 HST needed.

Here is the placement of the squares once you have made the Half Square Triangles.

The next step is for the four patches in each corner and in the center of the block.

You will sew one 2-1/2 inch dark square to the 2-1/2 inch light square right sides together. Press seams to the dark fabric.

Then sew one 2-1/2 inch light square to the 2-1/2 inch dark square. Again, press seam to the dark.

Once you have sewn the 2 squares together, you will then sew each the 2 rows together, right sides together. Pin the center to match up the seams.

I used all scrappy fabrics for my finished four patches. If you are using the same 2 light and dark fabrics throughout, you may want to strip piece your 2 patches. Click HERE for a strip piecing tutorial on my blog.

Strip piecing definitely saves time, but I really needed to use of my scraps.

Now here is the arrangement when you have all your four patches and Half Square Triangles sewn together.

Watch your placement of the light and dark squares

Sew the 3 squares in each row. Press seams in the opposite direction for each row.

Then sew the 3 rows together for your finished block!!
