How To Make Your Own Small Pillow Form...

Hi everyone! We've been busy moving our oldest daughter Courtney and her fiancé Courtland into their first home. We still have one more move of furniture this coming weekend (that dreaded heavy Ikea furniture that we're afraid to dis-assemble), but we're almost done!! It's been a lot of heavy lifting, painting, cleaning, organizing, but their home is beautiful. We're so proud of both of them for all they've accomplished at such an early age.

When everything is moved in, the final stage of decorating the new extra rooms they have will be the most fun! We all know after moving into a new apartment or a new home, money for all the final touches of decorating might not be there.

Pops of color, in the simplest form of pillows, is the best idea. Just one yard of fabric and a pillow form will do the trick. One yard of fabric can yield 2 throw pillows at 18 inches by 18 inches. You can also use pre-made fabric napkins or a tablecloth to make pillows too. It's just straight line sewing from there.

Today's post, however, is about the pillow forms. They can be so expensive in fabric or craft stores. Here's a tip to make your own from cheaper bed pillows you can buy at discount stores or ones you may already have.

Come on in to see how easy...

This is an older bed pillow I had in a pillow sham, so I'm using it to show you how to make smaller rectangle pillow forms. You can also cut it into a square.

Cut open the cover...

Then start to cut the batting inside.

If it's filled with loose fiber fill, just separate into each side evenly.

Sew the outer covering closed and you now have two smaller rectangle shaped pillow forms.

This smaller rectangle pillow for is great for...

  • the back of a chair
  • smaller couch
  • an additional throw pillow on a bed
  • a neck pillow for travel

Here is a bed sized pillow used for the large pillow 17"x23" and the polka dot is half a bed pillow!

The pillow in the front on the bed is a project I did last Christmas. It's a kitchen towel sewn up on the sides and half a bed pillow tucked inside.

Bed pillows are the cheapest at Walmart. They have a set of 2 medium sized bed pillows 2 for $7.23 (no affiliation, just wanted to share)

I also saw these in Walmart. They are travel pillow forms. They are already sewn in that small size.

14" x 20" for only $3.48!

Hope this was helpful for your next pillow project!

  10. I have some pillows that are no longer good for sleeping on; However, if I cut them apart and fluff the stuffing, I think I can reuse them. I have already washed and dried them, so they are clean.

  11. Thanks for the idea! Pillow forms are pricey, and it seems they've become outrageous over the past several years.

  13. I enjoy coming to see what new projects you are doing. This IS a great idea - I have made square ones too and used the leftovers to make a small rectangle. I even used two full size ones to make a dog bed for way less than at the store! When I make my covers, I sew them like shams-that way I can take them off for laundering too!

  14. Your idea of recycling old big pillows and making it smaller is a great project! And matching those up with pillowcases that come with different patterns, such as polka dots, only made them look newer and cuddlier. Anyone who would receive those customized pillows will surely love it. :-)
