Thoughts on Thursday...

Worst job for me in the kitchen...peeling potatoes. Dread!!

I've tried every tool and gadget too...still the endless bag of them to peel.

Most of the time I buy new red potatoes and smash them with the skin on. I keep telling my family there is more nutrients in the skin than the potato itself! Lol

What's your worst kitchen task?

Happy Thoughts on Thursday,
~Karen~

  1. for me..its all of it. I dont enjoy cooking at all..hubby does most of the cooking. BUT If I had to choose, it would be flipping pancakes! Trust me my fridge, toaster, and can opener get tired of having it all over them LOL

  2. I never ever buy russets any more--I too hate peeling them! I use Yukon golds and reds, and we all eat the skins, whether mashed, boiled, or roasted.

But my true least-favorite task? Cleaning the fridge, followed by cleaning the cooktop--especially after those who "don't notice" they boiled something over have been cooking.

    1. I have a 34-year old Jenn Aire glass cooktop that had horrendous staining on the most frequently used burner. I'm talking years and years of use and "cleaning" with the non-abrasive cleaners of every ilk. Well, guess what works like a charm? Oven cleaner! This is thanks to one of my sisters who visited last fall and made the suggestion. Took off all of that ghastly looking stuff in no time with no scrubbing.

  3. Cooking meat ,I keep telling hubby I don't eat it so I shouldn't have to cook it .

  4. I hate mincing garlic - your hands smell for ages afterwards. I buy the minced garlic in a jar now, not as tasty but worth it in the stinky stakes.

    1. What you need is a garlic press. Put the whole clove in and Press. No peeling necessary. Then you can have your fresh garlic back. Just make sure to buy a good quality one or you will be disapointed.

  5. I still hate peeling onions - they get me every time!

  6. I guess my least favorite thing to do in the kitchen is clean out the 'fridge . I can honestly say that I like being in the kitchen. I like to cook, enjoy washing dishes and hardly anything makes me happier than a clean stove top. I really am a "Suzy Homemaker" and the only reason I work outside the house is because I have to pay the bills!

You're telling your family truth, so don't worry :D

  8. I hate cleaning the stove and oven... *shudders* it should be easier to clean these things!

Completely off-topic but omg I love your blog! I've been just browsing around and pinning almost all of your pins to my pinterest! I love your organisation and quick DIY tips!

    1. I hired some one to clean my house, she uses the Mr Clean magic sponge thing, and if it doesn't come off w that (we are messy) she uses bar keepers friend. I think baking soda would work too.

  10. Washing silverware!! I hate that task!

My granny used to tell me that I peeled potatoes away... my hubby had rather have rice than spuds so I don't have to worry about that now. :)

  11. Karen, in the summer when the potatoes are new I always just scrub them and boil them in there skins. Sometimes I throw in one or two cloves of peel garlic and them mash the whole thing for Garlic Mashed Potatoes.
I loved mashed potatoes but hubby does not so I usually make rice or something other than potatoes.

I know have a self cleaning oven, but prior to that I really dislike cleaning the oven.

  12. Hey Karen,

You are right about the nutrition value: there is a lot in the skins so you are right to keep them.
When I was doing my nutrition practicum in a hospital kitchen, they had a "peeling tub" with small "blades" (I guess...) inside. You just dumped a huge load of potatoes, turned the gizmo on and waited, (covering your ears from horrible noise), that all those potatotes "peeled themselves". It was pretty awesome !
I hate everything that has to do with cleaning grease... Ugh ! And the fridge takes a good second place !

  13. I hate unloading the dishwasher. I have to remind myself it takes like 3 minutes. I love the skins on potatoes.

  14. Love to cook and don't even mind the clean up unless it's after cooking a big breakfast! I will have more cooking utensils after cooking a big breakfast than after cooking a big dinner..... that said, cleaning the fridge would be another top of the list

  15. I'm with Michele. I hate unloading the dishwasher; I recently started running it when it wasn't completely full - it's faster to unload! I do it while my coffee is brewing. And I eat potatoes with the skins on them. Yummy!

  16. I hate planning for and making meals. If I could get someone else to do it, I wouldn't mind cleaning the kitchen ceiling to floor including the oven.

  17. Uggh - almost anything in the kitchen is such a chore for me. Dirty dishes always make me grimace. I think it's b/c as soon as I get them done, there are more to do - it never ends!

  20. Hmmm, interesting topic! I'd have to say mine is husking corn. Hate it. I'd rather peel a potato - LOL!

  21. Hi Karen ~ i love your blog, but i'm with you and do not like peeling potatoes but even worse is washing chicken pieces to prepare to cook them ~ yuk! I feel like i need to sterilize my kitchen after.

  22. Ha! I have an automatic potato peeler that I hate. I also hate peeling the potatoes with a hand peeler. Some days I'll just grab the biggest russets I can find in the bag and use a sharp knife to slice off the ends and four sides, leaving a ton of the inside of the potato still on the skins, and a rectangle block of potato insides for me to cube. I figure at least it was quick and I am less frustrated, so I am okay with the waste.

  24. Peel potatoes? Isn't that what instant mashed potatoes are for? :)

Cleaning the fridge is a big one, but so is scrubbing grout on the tile floor. Oh, so glamorous!

  25. wow NANCYBABB, I just might go back to peeling potatoes again ! ! ! Thanks for that link. And Karen, thanks for this question !

  26. I'm good with cooking - especially for more than just myself. The top of the "put it off until the health department will come and condemn the place" list is mopping the floor. The kitchen chairs get dragged into the family room and God protect the person that steps onto that still damp surface!

  27. Not really a hate, but more of a peeve... When my family uses sugar and never seem to clean up after themselves when it is all over the counter and lands on the floor -- drives me bonkers!! And always wonder why those little crumbs from making toast on the counter are only visible to me? ;o)

    Your blog totally ROCKS!!

  28. I'm not a real fan of following instructions.
If the recipe has more than 3 ingredients then I make it or I change it up a bit. I am such a non-conformist.

We do NOT peel potatoes! We love the skin so this isn't a problem for us.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I usually don't mind the potato peeling, as long as someone is nearby to talk to. That seems to make the chore go by quicker. I don't like unloading the dishwasher.

  30. I'd have to say cleaning the oven is the worst.

  31. Potato peeling is also my worse job ..thats why we eat alot of noodles! :-)

  32. don't peel potatoes. Someone once told me with the skins on are "country style". So all my potatoes mashed,or boiled are "country or farm Style"

  33. You should watch the video that Dawn Wells (Maryanne from Gilligan's Island) has. There is a trick to making a cut around them, boiling them, soaking in ice water for a sec and then the skins just slide off. Here's the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4W0qIPJmoo

  34. I have been cooking and peeling potatoes for maybe 50 years. Started in jr. high with scalloped potatoes, and 43 years married my husband is a meat and potatoes man. No way around it. I don't like cleaning toilets. Give me potatoes.

  36. My kids can't believe I still peel potatoes, but believe me when they come to my house for dinner and mashed potatoes are on the menu, they are very excited to get "real" pototoes.

  37. I can peel potatoes forever if i know i won't unload the dishwasher for the rest of my life! It's killing me! >.<
