Vinyl Covered Sewing or Craft Table...and So Much More!!

I take one trip to Walmart for groceries and I'm tearing my sewing room apart. The Walmart fabric section has great utility fabrics...burlap, decorator weight, vinyl, canvas etc.  I always look when I'm there. Well, I found my favorite fabric pattern in vinyl sold off the roll. I've bought this vinyl fabric before in pre-cut packages and covered other things, but when it's sold by the yard, at any length I need and for $2.96 a yard, the possibilities are endless!! I just wanted to share that they sell it by the yard now!!

Here's the before of the table...

and here's the fabric up close...

It's so easy to cover a table and when you want to remove the vinyl, there is no damage to the furniture. Come on in and see how easy...

This is the after and it only took about 10 minutes to do and all you need are scissors and a staple gun.

There was nothing wrong with this table, just needed a change and only cost $6.00 for 2 yards and a few minutes of time. This also works great for second hand furniture that needs a little TLC and you don't want to refinish it...just cover it up!!

Here are a couple tips when doing this.

Cut enough drop down fabric to cover the thickness of the table and then enough to be folded underneath and stapled. My drop was about 4 inches.

Another tip is for vinyl that has a repeat pattern. When cutting and stapling the fabric, guide yourself so that one part of the repeated pattern is always along the edge of the table. I used this repeat white pattern on the edge (shown with the red arrow).

You can use any type of staple gun...manual or electric. I'm sure duct tape would work too, just depends on your furniture if it will stick.

Here is the underneath of the lip of the table where I stapled it.

The vinyl isn't slippery at all and my cutting mat really stays in place.

I love how it adds a pop of design to the room.

I also wanted to share this button storage box I found in a thrift store for $1.00!! Isn't it the cutest?

It's going to be great for holding all my sewing tools, thread and whatnots when I'm hand sewing!!

  13. Tha'ts pretty spectacular. I once covered a wooden counter in my classroom with vinyl tablecloths and that did the job but I hadn't thought of it for other surfaces. It's definitely got me thinking about an old table I have!! How easily does it get poked through? I'm afraid I'll tear it or make holes with pins and stuff.

  16. Love the table.. now you have me wanting to cover one of my big tables in my sewing room. Its very useful but was originally made out of commercial solid core doors. I never did get trim on the edges.. soo mmm now I am thinking this might be even better!

  17. I wish the WM's is my area would add the fabric and crafting departmnt back to their stores, but I don't see it happening. I have stopped going there for any and all my needs because of that reason.
