Cleaning George Foreman Grills…or Any Electric Grill

We have been using our George Foreman grills for years. We have them in 2 different sizes. The grills are great, because they cook the food quickly and the fat really drains off. Great for the winter months or even in the summer when it's raining and you can't get out to use the gas grill. I love them, but I hate to clean them more than anything. I think new versions or the more expensive ones have removable griddles, but ours are attached.

Here's the "before" of the little one after we cooked 2 burgers…ugh!

The speed of these grills still wins me over even when I have to clean them…but I do have a trick though!

Unplug your grill first, but when it's still a little hot place a few layers of wet paper towels across the griddle.

Close the cover and let it steam clean.

I leave it for a while when I cleaning up the rest of the kitchen and the dinner mess.

The last thing I do is wipe the mess off the grill…and it comes right off.

I've been doing this paper towel method for a while now, but in the beginning I would scrub it over the sink and rinse it off with the faucet sprayer. As you can see, I scrubbed a little too hard, because I scrapped off some of the Teflon coating. Still works great though.

When the two grills I have kick the bucket, my next purchase will be the one with the removable griddle. For now, it's hot paper towels for me!!

Hope this helps!

Thanks for stopping by,
~Karen~

  2. I have a love/hate relationship with my George Foreman grill. Love to use it (so simple & fast) but hate to clean it! I have an ancient split lid grill and that thing is still a pain to use, even with the paper towel trick. Of course, it would help if I always remembered to use the paper towels . . .
I thought I'd just replace it with a newer model where the plates come out, but I can't find one as big as the one I have so I guess I'll just try to be better about remembering those darned paper towels. :D

  4. when my daughter gave me my grill, she told me about the paper towel trick - I have never used any other method - be sure the paper towels are really wet!

  6. Rather than paper towels, I use old towel rags cut to size. If I can't clean it right after I cook, I will preheat it again after, and just unplug it while I do the towel trick. The timer still counts down, so that is okay. It sure cleans up easiest when it is still hot.

  8. This also works with a messy microwave oven. Just wet your washcloth, stick in oven, turn on for 2-3 minutes, let cool, and wipe out. L

  11. Thank you so much for this tip. When I made a toasted sandwich today the cheese melted out onto the sandwich maker so I wondered if this trick would work. Fabulous, the cheese was removed easily once the towel had cooled down. I will be using it to clean everything now.

  14. If you use a little bit of oil or Pam on the grill just before cooking your item it helps with cleanup too.

  15. You may want to toss the foreman grill with the damaged teflon... I have read it is toxic when ingested, and is only dangerous when there are damages to the surface (scratches, nicks, etc) that lead to pieces being pulled into the food. If intact, its safe.
