This is where I usually use the suction cup holder. It's in my kitchen sink for the scrubby pad. I love for this!!
Two suction cups keep it in place.
However, I do sew in the car from time to time, so this is going to be my new sewing caddy when I'm hand sewing my hexagons!!
The first step is the pin cushion. You could just squeeze in one of your own pin cushions in the basket, but I had this one from another tutorial.
It's a pillow style with a band in the back that had elastic through it.
Now it has a ribbon to go around the basket.
Just tie it around the entire edge of the sponge holder.
Adjust to your type of basket.
I also added folding scissors to the basket. You can buy these in any sewing or craft store or even online.
Now fill it with your hand sewing projects, fabric, hexagons and spools of thread.
The best part of the sponge holder is the suction cup feature.
Handy sewing caddy while riding in the car! It's up and out of the way. Helps to keeps the spools of thread and accessories from rolling all over the floor or down the seat!!
It suction cups right to your car window (obviously on the passenger side, Lol)
The wire basket style feature also serves as a thread dispenser.
Keep the spools in the basket and just pull out as much as you need.
The folded scissors are right there when you need them to cut the thread.
Just unfold, cut…
then fold them back up when not using them…just to be safe.
Whether in the car or
sitting next to you in the house in your favorite chair, this little sewing caddy is perfect for any hand sewing project!

Five years ago, I came up with this sewing caddy when we drove to Disney World. Lots of sewing on that trip!

I'm just curious ... do you EVER sleep??? Your brain must hurt some days from all of the thinking it does! Another perfect idea from the MASTER.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking this could even work on an airplane, with a very small pair of scissors (some flights allow them) or just a Clover cutter pendant. Perhaps you could make a little liner with a drawstring top to contain it all. No more rolling about & losing things under the seat! Thanks for the ideas!

I have done this on the last couple trips and it has been wonderful. I keep a small round magnet to hold my needle when I'm not using it which sits on the ledge perfectly in my husband's truck. And my container has a opening across the bottom where I pull my thread through. It's nice to have everything up and off my lap, and is easy to find in the car. I'll have to get one for both my girls though too. Keep the great ideas coming!!!!

ReplyDeleteNice idea, maybe someday I can use it in a car. Our roads are so bad, sewing would not be the best choice of time-filler for a passenger, especially in a bouncy SUV (when I'm not the driver, that's what we're in). Besides, I can't read in a moving car, so I'm not sure how sewing would go. Maybe for a small project kit to take along though...

I just lOVE all our hardward and painting tools to organize with and use in quilting.....I grew up with my Dad riding around to the Paint Stores and at times running uptown on my bike to get him something at the hardware store....he was a House Painter!!....inside a house or out and wallpaper hanger with redoing furniture on the side and addicted to Saturday auctions....did I mention and he had 8 kids....spread out over 24 years......AMAZING man!! anyways, how I wish I had a few of his old paint sticks now, etc!!......Keep it up....from a Painters Daughter.......my Dad could chew the fat too at the Paint Stores....as I played in the isles or colored in the kids section.....I think I have all of his loves of life!!......chatty

So, I knew I HAD one of those wire sponge baskets with suction cups - but could I find it when I needed it? No. Then I remembered another suction cup caddy I had that was languishing in the bathroom...and although it is plastic, I think I can make it can work. I would love to post pictures of it here, but don't know how. Anyway, thanks for the idea - because before this, I was using the indented hand-hold in the door of the van for my scissors and needle case and thread. Better than losing all the stuff on the floor, but hardly ideal. Why I never thought of a suction-cup caddy is beyond me - I'm usually quite clever. But you are obviously much MORE clever! So glad to have found your blog.
ReplyDeleteIt is a clever to storage , but may you find a rubber suction instead of PVC suction if you want to suck on wall firmly.
