Block of the Month Club #4...Shoo Fly

Hi everyone...so sorry for the delay between blocks in the Block of the Month Club. I am catching up and will be sharing a few blocks this week and next.

Remember all blocks in the club are 12 1/2 inches (unfinished) size. You can read the other posts for sewing tips and tricks. You can click HERE for a link to the Block of the Month Club series. This block will be first, but scroll down for the rest.

Block #4 is Shoo Fly...

The last block we made was Flying Geese. Click HERE for that. In that tutorial, I showed you a method for the geese that gave us a bonus block...16 - 2 1/2 inch half-square triangles. Pictured below.

Well, today's block will be using all 16 of the 2 1/2 inch half square triangle. I'll have another post coming up with a tutorial for just half square triangles.

For the rest of the block you will need...

  • 10- 2 1/2 inch squares of dark fabric
  • 10- 2 1/2 inch squares of light fabric

Here is the arrangement for the squares. The final 12 1/2 inch block is made up of 4 shoo fly blocks that are 6 1/2 inches each.

Take one block at a time.

Sew the 3 squares across in a row...sewing all 3 rows.

You can strip piece that middle row with the light and dark fabric. I am using scraps, so my block just uses squares.

Strip piecing is sewing 3 long strips of fabric together, then cutting the 3 sewn strips into the width you need.

Then sew the 3 rows together to form the block. Press your seams as you go.

Now take the 4 finished squares and arrange them dark, light, dark, light...as shown below.

Sew the top 2 blocks in a row, then the bottom 2 blocks in a row.

Then sew the 2 rows together.

A perfect 12 1/2 inch block of lights and darks.
