Where to Store Extra Bed Pillows...In Plain Sight

There was a time that we had people sleeping over a lot....when the kids were growing up and had friends stay with us or when family comes to visit. Times have changed and kids have grown up, but we still have family that comes throughout the year.

In years past, when sleep overs were common, I had big storage bags made up with the sheets, pillows, blankets and the air mattress all set to go for that person. I don't have that set up any more, but I still have a lot of "extras" to store...like bed pillows.

Here's where I store my extra bed pillows now..."in plain sight".

Inside Pillow Shams!!

There are other ways I've stored them over the years too...

The times where I squeezed them into the top shelf of closets or cupboards or in these big plastic bins.

I still have a few in these boxes now.

I also used these space bags when I made up the bed kits. They're good, but I don't use them as much.

The pillow sham storage is the best for me at the moment.

It kills 2 birds with one stone, as they say..."stores" guest pillows in the shams and it also "saves" me from buying extra pillows when I make the pillow shams!!

These shams were store bought with the quilt on my bed, but I sometimes make mine the same way.

Easy ties on the back to access the inside of the pillow.

Stores the guest pillow perfectly!

We keep our own sleeping bed pillows behind all the shams and the shams are not on the bed when we are sleeping.

Courtney's room has lots of decorative pillows too...great storage again.

Kelsie's room too.

The girls' rooms have the European shams which are large and square. Those can sometimes fit 2 regular bed pillows instead of buying the expensive European pillow.

I know for some people, space is limited. Hopefully you can use this idea to store your pillows too...right there in plain site!!

Have a great day,
~Karen~

  1. Such a great idea, I might just do this. I have a few spare covers and have not gotten around to buying pillows/cushions that exact size, I also have an overflowing linen closet right now, now I know how to solve this, thanks Karen :)

  2. Good Afternoon Karen, This is a great idea as I have lots of family who come to stay with us, as we are spread around the world, but storage is such a problem in our English houses. So I am going to use this idea. I shall be decorating all the beds with lovely pillow cases. Thank you so much for another fabulous idea.
    Best wishes to you,
    Daphne

  3. This is nice, but sort of assumes you make the beds all the time. Some of us, who live without other humans (I'm not "alone". I have 2 cats.) don't make our beds with the exception of when we change the sheets or have humans coming to visit or care for the aforementioned cats. (You're not going to make me go make my bed, are you? ;) )I use the plastic bin method of storage because I have other bins with stuff in them and they stack in a closet nicely. Plus, one of the girls loves to sleep on the top of the stacked bins so I put a towel on top of the top one and it's her sleeping spot in the winter. I change her towel when I change the ones in the bathroom.

  4. Cool idea! I use different ways of storing like you, but never thought of the pillow sham idea. I'll have to do that, I like that much better than storing them out of site!

  5. This is a great idea! I have a small linen closet, so this is perfect. Since I just purchased a new sewing machine, I believe making some pillow shams is in my future.
Thanks for this wonderful idea! Enjoy your week! ~~Vickie

  6. I love the backside of your pillow shams! I think I would turn them around and show the cute bows on our beds. :D

  7. How simple and fun is that! I keep trying to stuff my extra pillows into the linen closet, getting all aggravated and frustrated! I love your idea! Now I have a good excuse to make some pillowcases/shams and my husband can't complain. Good way to free up some space in the closet, too. Thanks for sharing. I love your pics!

  8. Perfect solution for extra pillows! Since my son is away in the Navy, I can use his bed...it needs a little extra something. Thank you for another wonderful idea!

Wonderful idea! I am moving in to my first home in a few weeks, and I always have extra pillows on MY bed, but now I think I will get extras for my kid's beds too so we always have enough!

  10. Great idea. I have my extras in Plastic bags! ugh. Do you have any good suggestions on where to put the extra pillows when going to bed? I dislike having to put them on the floor. (Dog+cats!!)
