Hi Everyone! I've been sewing this week, but boring hemming of sheers for a big project at work. I've been decorating 2 waiting room for the dental office where I work. Maybe I can share some before and after pictures of that...need to ask the doctor first!
While shopping for furniture for that project, my daughter Courtney and I took a trip to Ikea. It was her first time and she LOVED it. She actually spent $450 for things for her dorm or first apartment for next year.
One thing she bought for her room this year is this collapsible desk. It's a perfect space saver for a dorm. She needs the storage, work space for her graphic design work (she uses a rotary cutter and mat) and it will be a great place to eat on too.
Both table sides fold down easily...
Stores away at only 12 inches wide.
The width is 31 1/2 inches.
Each side has 3 drawers...so lots of storage. She'll keep her yummy snacks on one side and her graphic design supplies on the other.
The drawers are deep too.
She can keep one side flat up against the wall and have one leaf open.
or expand both sections.
This top is 31 1/2 inches x 5 feet
Why I wanted to share this with all of you, because this would make a great sewing/craft table.

P.S the box is heavy, so beware when shopping in Ikea. A very nice man who worked there helped us with it. Lol

- heavy butcher block
- very stable for sewing machine
- great work space
- stores easily if you have limited space
- great for spare room or dining room that you convert to your craft room when needed
- the birch wood color is $179, but it comes in white for $199

Thanks for sharing this! I pretty much hate IKEA (just because shopping there is a complete hassle most of the time), but we do have one just 10 minutes away. I was just thinking this morning that I need to move my crafting/cutting area off of the kitchen table. This table would be perfect for me. Guess I'll start saving my money!

ReplyDeleteIt is a kitchen/dining table but you could use those 'elevators' for the legs. Usually, you should have a height of 36 in for a cutting table if you are not too tall... (I have been shopping for those cutting tables myself...)

ReplyDeleteOne tip...with that much weight from table, put L brackets on the leg joints to give stability and keep them from coming apart.

ReplyDeleteI went to the Ikea site, and they give no height measurements at all. They call it a gate leg dining table, so I must assume it is not cutting table height---to bad.

ReplyDeleteIf the table is 5 foot open and the center with the drawers is 12" wide. That makes the drop tops 2 foot each. and a gap at the bottom for clearance, so the height of the table must be about 26" give or take.

ReplyDeleteI love the table. It reminds me of the drop leaf tables in so many homes built during the housing boom after WWII. Very efficient use of space and a really beautiful color (and it would be worth the extra $50 to have someone else paint it white!).
I made a cutting table with plans from Ana White. I made my table a bit too tall though and I used the same mechanism as the Norden table instead of Ana's way. It is very sturdy but too tall for me...

ReplyDeleteI have the Norden in white and it is my cutting table in my sewing room. I have placed it perpendicular to my sewing table and use the drawers on that side for my rotary cutters, presscloths, instruction manuals, etc. On the other side sits my rocking chair and I use the the drawers on that side to hold hand sewing supplies, catalogs and my mug rug for if I am drinking coffee while knitting or reading in my rocker. It is a WONDERFUL table. Believe it or not, it seems EVEN HEAVIER once you build it!

I've also got it in white in my sewing room. I got mine gosh about 10 years ago and have it up against my sewing table, when I need extra width to help support a project it gets expanded. I've also used it as a cutting table.
DeleteLove the drawers for extra storage for notions etc.
It's a great table; I have looked at it. But it's too low for rotary cutting and pressing. The height for those activities should be about 36 inches. Is there any way to raise it up? Put it on casters, maybe?

I've never been to an Ikea but could sure get into trouble there, I think! The table looks great but would be way too short for me--I think casters as suggested above, or bed risers, would be a quick fix for anyone tall, like me :) Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteI went to Ikea today, finally got my magazine holders 5 for 1.99, I can't do your cereal box ones as I don't eat cereal, but I plan on putting pretty paper on them. My Ikea has been remodeling the market place and they finally got everything back to normal. But I saw this table today in white, it was very nice and looked sturdy as well. I just love Ikea, when they opened one here in Orlando it was dangerous for me.
ReplyDeleteI know you will love it because I have that table! I love it for crafting. I actually paid a friend who was heading to Portland to stop and pick one up. I can tell you they're roughly 100 pounds...solidly built. I generously lent it to my oldest when he moved out, but when it became clear he wasn't in love with it the way I was, I traded him another table and took it back. I will tell you that I added wheels to the bottom to make it easy peasy to use and put away.

OMG I am sure Ikea will be out of stock in no time! this is a perfect table for small quilty areas or added area if you have friends that you would like to quilt with you!! love this idea.. I have to go there and get one!

ReplyDeleteGreat find for Courtney and us. She may use it for the dorm, but eventually she will need a sewing table - but, no! She already has it.
ReplyDeleteToo funny! I actually have that table (bought it a few years back to use as a dining table in a very small apartment where it could be folded down most of the time, just one side used when dinner was just me, or moved to the living room and expanded when I had dinner guests) AND use it as my sewing table. My only word of advice is to keep the sides down when not in use if possible. All that open space is just SO tempting to stack things on "temporarily." Which would by why my sewing table is currently under a foot of projects, clothes, and generic stuff.
ReplyDeleteI use this for my sewing table and love it. I found it a couple of years ago on clearance for $99. My hubby put wheels on it so it's much easier to move around.
