Quick tip...Prevent Smelly Onion Hands

I know, crazy title, but that's it...smelly onion hands. There is nothing worse and it seems to last forever. I am a dental hygienist and I learned a long time ago, the smell of onions on my hands is not good.

Here's a quick and easy solution...

Gloves!! Works every time. You can buy them in any drug store.

I wear 2 gloves to start the peeling process. However, if my grip with the glove on my right hand isn't great holding the knife, I'll remove the glove on the right to do the cutting. The left glove stays on the whole time. Just depends on the fit and style of the glove.

Short post, but priceless tip for smelly onion hands...

Have a great day,
~Karen~

  1. If you forget your gloves...wash your hands, and then rub your hands with tin foil, I have no idea why, but it really works!! ...it also works for smelly garlic hands :)

  2. If you don't have any gloves on hand wash your hands with soap and then rub them on the bowl part of a spoon, it works everytime, same idea as the foil, I'm thinking.

  3. I keep a bottle of Soft Soap by my kitchen sink - they have one that is especially for the kitchen and gets rid of odors from the kitchen - like onions - easier than putting on a pair of gloves :)

  4. I don't think that I could cut anything with gloves on so what I do is wash and rub my hands on a stainless steel sink (got one in my kitchen) - it really works! Great after chopping garlic too! You can buy a stainless steel soap but the sink works great!

  6. I've got an even easier way to get rid of onion hands.... rub your hands around your stainless steel sink, I don't know how, but it actually gets rid of the onion smell. Once while in a fancy kitchen supply store I saw that they were actually selling bars of stainless steel shaped like bars of soap for that exact purpose, but they were kind of expensive, light bulb went off..."Hey, I've got a stainless steel sink!!!"

  7. Yes, wiping hands on stainless steel works, but if you leave the root end on the onion while cutting it works good, too. Try it sometime! :)

  8. I keep some of my used coffee grounds from the morning coffee. Works every time. If you're not a coffee drinker, I know you can get coffee soap for this same purpose. I just hate to produce more unnecessary waste. Especially since most gloves are made from synthetic latex, nitrile, or vinyl which are not biodegradable.

  11. I "glove up" for everything! I buy the surgical gloves at Costco & keep some in the kitchen, bathrooms & laundry room. I use them whenever I"m handling raw meats or poultry & all kinds of fruits & veggies. I have very sensitive hands that tend to crack & get sore, so the gloves have been a lifesaver for me. The light-weight plastic ones will not stay on my hands, but no probs with the surgical ones. Love them!

  12. Another hygienist... but I just use the stainless steel tip. Seems to work for me. I'm glad to see a few other hygienists who sew.

  13. You can run your fingers/hands along or around something that is stainless steel and it will eliminate the odor.
