Thoughts on Thursday...

Summer officially began Wednesday night, June 20th at 7:09 in the northern hemisphere. How did we kick off summer...

My favorite Dairy Queen Blizzard...Banana Cream Pie!! I would have taken a picture of the one I had, but I ate it too fast.

Ahhh, remember when...

Not sure where this picture is, but ours looks like this one except for the cute 1950's dresses.

Do you have a Dairy Queen near you? or should I say DQ...what's your favorite treat at DQ or any summertime ice cream treat?

Happy Summer,
~Karen~

  1. We are lucky to have 3 near us and yesterday was the last day of school so we headed to DQ for Blizzards and Shakes (of course) to celebrate. My fave will always be the seasonal pumpkin pie, my grands always order the M&M.

  2. The DQ nearest us is in a mall. So, it doesn't look like the one in the picture.

But, back in my hometown (Willow Grove, PA), we have one JUST like that. The line sometimes stretches for a long way on a hot summer night.

  4. When I was a child the doctor I went to gave coupons for a free ice cream cone at the local Dairy Queen when you got a shot. I blame him for my love affair with DQ.

My husband continued this by taking me to the DQ almost every weekend while we dated.

I drive by one on my way home from work every day. I only stop a couple of times a month. I generally get a Buster Bar. My all time favorite is a cherry dip cone but they aren't carried everywhere and that DQ does not have them.

It is 6:00 a.m. and now I want DQ. I have to go out today. It may happen!

  5. I don't much like Dairy Queen. But I long for the sundaes of my youth. Peter's Dairy and Scholl's Dairy (yes, the foot doctor's brother)both sold Nut Dips the most fabulous ice cream concoctions topped with nuts and whipped cream. We walked right past the Dairy Queen one more block to Peter's. It cost a little more but O, so worth it. I was raised in Michigan City Indiana long before it became a beach town.

    Thanks for the memory.

  6. How funny - that is exactly what hubby and I did last night. We went to Dairy Queen for a blizzard! I hadn't thought that is was the first day of summer. We both had our favorites - Tropical blizzard. Oh, it was so gooood! Of course it will be a while before we go again - can't afford the calories too much!

  9. My uncle owned a Dairy Queen in a small town in northern Michigan. Going up there in the summers and getting free ice cream was so worth the 4 hour drive!! Such wonderful memories of trying to make that little swirl on the top of a ice cream cone just perfect...

  10. You probably won't believe this exists: corn ice cream from Brazil. THE best!!! Can you imagine the wonderful taste of sweet corn, but cold and creamy? :-)

  11. Wow, GREAT memories. As a tike, my big brother worked at a DQ at the beach. We LOVED going down there and buying (yes we had to buy) a cone with that crazy crunchy chocolate dip.
Thanks for the memory re-boot! :)

  12. Both of my girls worked at the DQ, but now we have to drive 45 miles for the nearest one. My favorite is/was the pecan cluster Blizzard.

  13. Our DQ is directly across the road from my office, which makes it soooo tempting about 3:00 in the afternoon. lol My favorite is the Strawberry Cheesequake blizzard.

  14. Yes, we have a modern one...love the pic above though. I love the turtle sundaes. Don't get them very often though...gobs of calories.

  15. All ice cream tastes the same to me, so I'm not an ice cream lover. My husband however loves DQ so at times he'll ask me to go with him. When I do I have a small hot fudge sudae. Love your blog.

  16. always get the peanut buster parfait. saw a commercial for their cakes and now i want to try one.

  17. The DQ 3 blocks from the office closed over the winter to be replaced by a nail salon. Now, if I want a peanut buster parfait, I have to drive several miles to the next closest one. I went to the one that closed, but I guess my patronage wasn't enough to keep them open.

  18. No DQ anywhere near here, but when I get near one, I start to crave the salty sweet peanut buster parfait!

    OMG! I love it........

  19. It's a favorite treat after dinner to pack our kiddos in the bike trailer and ride up to the seasonal DQ "in town" (funny to say that since "town" is the suburb and we technically live in the city). My parents like to take our girls to the DQ near them which is a training store and after a certain time, treats are half off. My favorite is still a good ole oreo blizzard.

  20. Karen,
I live about eight blocks from the original DQ in Roseville, MN. The kids and I anxiously wait for the DQ to open at the end of February, which is our first sign of SPRING. My favorite is the peanut buster parfait...everybody likes parfaits Shrek!

  21. We have a new DQ right near us now which is thoroughly modern. However, before that one opened we used to go about 10 miles to the next closest one. Took the kiddos there every week and the owners knew us. One day I had an empty wallet and they let me "slide by" until the next time we visited. Boy was I ever glad. Would you like to tell your small kids "sorry, Mommy forgot to bring the money" while we were looking at our ice cream??? My favorite is still a good 'ole hot fudge sundae. No nuts and whipped cream; I'm a purist!

  22. When I was a a little girl (a very long time ago) my dad would take the family to a tiny Dairy Queen not far from our house. I would always get the tiniest cone (I think it was 10c) and then a treat would be the chocolate dipping for another 5c. As I got older, Dilly Bars were a favourite - I think I just liked the name!! Now my fav is the Peanut Buster Parfait ... love the chocolate and peanut butter combo mixed in with the ice cream. YUM! We only go once or twice in the summer, but it is a real treat!

  23. I love, love, love DQ and my favorite is chocolate dipped strawberry blizzard. You know that chocolate that gets hard and crunchy when it gets cold - that is what they use in the vanilla ice cream plus some strawberries. Sure wish I had one now!

  24. I have a soft-spot for DQ.... one of my dear children is a manager at our local DQ! She has yet to bring home a treat that we didn't like! :)

  25. When I was a kid we lived in a very small town. We had a bowling alley, a bar, a SpeedyMart and a Dairy Queen. So I have very fond memories of Dairy Queen! Do they still have Buster Bars? (I think that's what they were called.) Oh those were definitely my favorite. That or a chocolate dipped vanilla soft serve. Yum!

  26. Buster Bars or a chocolate dipped cone!!!! Oh, my.....

  27. We have tons of Dairy Queens around. Some are "brazier" but I don't really know what that means... We've got one old roadside stand kind like the picture (and probably that old) that's only open in the summer. It's a time-keeping thing in town; it's not summer until the 8th St DQ is open!

I love a Skor Blizzard but somedays I'll settle for a large plain soft serve cone. I remember as a kid, Dairy Queen had about 8 hard ice cream flavours, too, but we always went for the soft ones because we could have hard ice cream at home. Ah, nostalgia!

  28. Hi Karen, I love the Turtle Pecan Clusters, and I ask them to do the swirl icecream (1/2 vanilla & 1/2 chocolate) yum!!! My only problem is the closest DQ is 50 miles away.

  29. Yum!!! I have an utterly horrible DQ weakness.
My fav is the Reeses's peanut butter cup blizzard with a shot of chocolate sauce in it.

  30. I wrote a post called "Low Calories....I Don't Think So", on May 15th. It was about my local Dairy Queen. Hope you enjoy reading it. It's difficult to go into town without stopping by for a blizzard!

  31. My husband and I love Blizzards! Our favorite is Reese Cup. When I was pregnant with my son in 1992, I craved Oreo Blizzards. :)

  32. Peanut Buster Parfait...gonna have one today!

  33. My dad owns a DQ in my town in WI so I grew up in one! Worked there for years and have eaten my weight (and then some) in ice cream. They don't make them anymore, but NERDS blizzards were my favorite!

I've also taken in fresh peaches and made my own peach blizzard...super yummy! When you are the bosses daughter you get to do fun stuff like that!
