Sew, Sew Saturday...

Hi all my wonderful blogging friends. On Sew, Sew Saturdays, I usually share something I've made or a sewing tutorial. However, I couldn't resist sharing something sewing "related" with you.

My blogging friend Leanne, from Australia, sent me the funniest thing I've ever read and thought it would be great to share it on my blog. OMG will I share it!!! How could I not.

The picture below is "Advice From The Singer Sewing Manual" in 1949. I made the picture larger so you can read it!! It's priceless...

The best...

"Never try to sew with sink full of dishes or beds unmade"...

Yeah right, I DON'T do the dishes or make the beds so I have more time to sew. Lol

"When you sew, make yourself attractive. Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick on"...

Seriously, I'm lucky to have a bra on and my hair brushed. Sewing time is priceless on my day off, so I just throw on some clothes and I'm ready to go.

I think I will frame this and put it in my sewing room just to keep me smiling!!

Thanks Leanne...awesome email! You really need to start a blog, by the way. Lol

Happy Sew, Sew Saturday,
~Karen~

  1. Too funny! The only time household chores become "urgent" is when we run out of clothes! Thanks for the smile today!

  3. Can you imagine getting the same advice in a manual today? This is just too funny, not sure when the last time I had a dress on - but it wasn't yesterday when I was sitting at my sewing machine! Thanks for sharing. ~Ann

  4. Comfy clothes bra optional while sewing is my outfit of choice and the dishes and unmade beds will still be there when I'm done sewing! Good thing its 2012 not 1949 we've come a long way girls!!!!

  6. Love it!

I'm lucky that I inherited my late DGM's treadle Singer machine. I should print this out too and keep it near the machine.

  7. Karen, this is priceless- I just spent the morning sewing THEN did a bit of housework. I shall post this on my blog [citing you of course!]

  8. Thankfully the kids are old enough to clean their own dishes - at least in theory! And as to sewing clothes - I need shorts (sweats in the winter), t-shirt, no bra and either bare feet or socks. If someone drops by, they know I have cat and dog hair everywhere and am dressed accordingly. Now I just need to get the sewing room back in order. I think I need to find this and frame it too. Thanks for the morning laugh Karen.

  10. I have seen this before with the picture attached - the picture was priceless as well.... I guess my sewing will never be perfect because I know I will never be 'prepared' for when a "visitor drops in"....and hubby lives here (never could figure out that one). Thanks for sharing, Karen.

  11. Thanks for giving me a laugh this morning! I don't sew, I papercraft and I do it braless with messy hair. I also leave everything in a mess around the house - it'll still be there later {my huband is very understanding!}.

  13. Priceless! I have shared on fb with a link to your blog, I hope you don't mind. I might have to share on my blog too, it's just that good (will link of course). Please thank your friend for us, I'm an Aussie too :) I know lots of sewers who are going to be in stitches over this, no pun intended, haha!

  14. We had a great laugh over this! By the time you're done getting ready to sew you will either be exhausted or have run out of time!

  15. This post is so funny and so are all the comments. Well I go round bare foot, clothes, the nearest thing I can grab but with a bra LOLLL Lipstick and tidy hair, that's a joke, only when I leave the house and just in case someone should drop in I have some clothes ready for a quick change hanging on my door. The only thing I do insist on is getting rid of the dishes after every meal, I must admit she does have a point. No point in making the bed I'm only going to mess it up when I have my afternoon nap and then again at night. Oh and I've trained my son to do his own ironing, still working on hubby. LOLLL

  20. This is just hysterical! Thank goodness we are sewers in today's world!

  21. Does that mean I can't sew in my jammies until noon? Drats!

  22. Well though I agree in this day and age we don't dress like they did in the 30s, 40s or 50s... having the house in okay condition most days seems to free up time for fun pursuits for me. I don't wear makeup or wear a dress but company comes by often unexpected so I do have to keep some things in order every day. I don't have a job away from home and I think that makes all the difference. Times have changed a lot. But most ladies have dishwashers, too, now. And we have a much higher premium on free time & enjoying family without as much fuss. I am not Martha Stewart. She would love this old manual!

  23. Love it. My husband read it too and laughingly said "boy, how things have changed." Too funny.

  24. Can't stop grinning. So glad its not 1949! LOL

  25. Love this post! I can't believe women actually used to do that! I don't think I have ever put on a dress while sewing much less done my hair and make up! And I am certain my other household chores are NOT done. Actually, that's why I sew, to get away from it all! Thanks for sharing!

  26. oh my GOODNESS this is priceless! A sink of dirty dishes? I CAN do them, but with teen boys in the house, that does not mean when I return 10 mins later its not FULL again! lolol good thing there is no video camera to catch my morning hairdo or schleppy clothes. If someone 'catches' me sewing? THEIR FAULT FOR NOT CALLING AHEAD! lolololol

  27. That's too funny, especially your comments! I love going commando myself :) We've come a long way baby!

  28. Well, judging from all those reactions, you all will find me as crazy as that article....
I really do all my house chores first, so I can relax and sew. I just can not enjoy my sewing when I know there is something that needs to be done.
Am I crazy?? Maybe, but that's just me....
Oh, on the other hand; I just wair an old t=shirt and joggingpants, no bra, no hair done, no make-up on.... That's the upside of having a hubby that's gone all week and having no friends that drop by unannounced....

    ReplyDelete
  29. ROTFL!!! I had to clean off a corner of the cutting table just to trim a quilt border.
    Thanks for sharing this.

  30. Saw this last week, brilliant! I am really enjoying all your blog posts Karen, thanks for sharing x

  31. Lol this has given me a good chuckle :D I don't have my hair in order or lipstick and powder on when I go to work, let alone crafting and you don't want to see my sink or bed!

  32. ...in case the hubby comes home...well tell him to grab a seat and chit chat or go watch some TV!! I am busy sewing!!!

    Thx for showing this off!

  38. Karen I was shown this book about 20 years ago by a male work colleage who was gay.
He pointed out to us that the hair comment was ok but he couldn't find a nice dress that would fit him.
He had us in fits of laughter when reading this out to us.
    A fabulous book.

  42. You put a bra on! I'm like you...sewing time is precious...pajamas are my sewing outfit...hair sticking up...if someone were to knock on the door...I would just have to pretend I am not home...thanks for making me laugh out loud this morning.
