Eggs-tra Special Campfire Starter...

Summertime means...campfires, s'mores, relaxing and family fun.

Want to make fire starting eggs-tra easy? I saw this idea in a book years and years ago, and wanted to share it with you.

Recycle a CARDBOARD (only) egg carton and fill it with "match light" charcoal. Fill each egg cup with one brickette.

Make sure they are match light charcoal and the carton is cardboard, NOT the styrofoam kind.

Close up the carton and it's perfect to take with you to the campground.

Add to your campfire site, barbecue grill or your fire pit. This is the fire pit we keep in our back yard for s'more parties!! (we don't keep it next to those trees...I just had to move it in the shade for the picture)

The cardboard carton is easy to light with a match and then the charcoal starts too!!

Storage, transporting and ease of starting...Perfect!!

Make up several cartons and keep them on hand to take with you camping or just keep in a safe place for those last minute fires you have in the backyard for roasting hot dogs or marshmallows!

Have a great day,
~Karen~

  2. Dryer lint is also great for helping start campfires. I used to save it for the scout troop.

  5. Another great idea Karen! I save my egg cartons year round, along with my toilet paper and paper towel tubes. This is what I use to start wood files in our fireplace in the winter. I open 3 egg cartons and overlap the middle one with one half of each of the side cartons. Then I crush some toilet paper tubes and slide them into the paper towel tubes and lay them long ways on the egg cartons, one tube in each long section. I put this whole thing under the grate, load up the wood, light it in a few places, and it's good to go! Much neater than wadding up newspapers too! Ick!

  7. I like your idea, when I was a Girl Scout Leader for my daughter, we took these same egg holders, filled them with dryer lint then poured melted paraffin wax over all of them. After they dried, we cut apart. These were great "fire starters".

  8. Ack! I could have used this tip last week. We just got back from a camping trip today. The first night it was so windy, we had so much trouble lighting the grill... I will remember this for our spring camping trip....

  11. I wished I would have seen this fire starter idea last night. I had a bit of a hard time lighting my grill. Plus with this idea I probably would have saved on lighter fluid. You would be surprised how many people who don't no how to start a fire and maintain the fire. Great Post

  12. Loved this idea, but mine didn't work when I tried it. I guess too much air gets to the bricks and the "starter fluid" inside the charcoals evaporated. ???? Not sure, but it just didn't work well for me.

  13. I have always used dryer lint as well, Cheryl. I don't remember if I learned that in scouts or not. Pack each egg-well with lint. I take an old tin can (from canned food) and melt some household/canning wax on the stove, then pour it over the lint (have the egg carton sitting on something because the wax will go through!) Each egg-well will burn for about 45 minutes, if done right! Great for starting fires when the conditions aren't perfect.

  16. I'll have to try it! My current method: I use paper coffee filters to filter bacon grease to save for other uses. I save the fat soaked coffee filters to use to start fires.

  18. Super clever idea! You could just keep those in your garage, already put together, and pull them out when you need them!

  19. If you use Match Light charcoal use are putting a chemical smell in your food. I suggest you you all natural fiber lint from your dryer (no synthetic fabrics, chemicals again). You can put it in the cardboard egg carton will a little melted wax. Let it harden and you have 12 fire starters. I am a Girl Scout Trainer and we have to stay away from the chemicals in dryer lint and charcoal. It is a great idea and if you are going to use it, wrap it in wax paper with masking tape so it lasts longer.

  20. This is a great idea for camping! However, I don't see the need for the Matchlight charcoal. If you light the cardboard, the charcoal will light too.
We never use any kind of lighter fluid, including the Matchlight charcoal that is soaked in fluid. We use a charcoal chimney.
Believe me! If you ever stop using lighter fluid, you will NEVER go back to using it again. The meat is so much better without using it!
