Thoughts on Thursday...

Do you say things that "DATE" you...I slip sometimes and still say cream rinse instead of conditioner.

Remember these cream rinses from the 1970's? OMG so funny the memories.

Tame...

and Breck...

I also say dittos instead of worksheets...worse than dittos was mimeographs.

Ok, I'll stop. I'm getting OLDER as I type!  Lol

How about you? What do you say to "date" yourself?

Happy Thursday,
~Karen~

  1. This weekend I called flip flops 'thongs' and my daughter did a double take!! Flip Flops are definitely NOT thongs...but back in my day that's what they were called!! Who knew...(:o)

    1. I caused quite a stir at a holiday table once when I told the younger folks that we used to wear thongs two at one time. Of course, I was referring to wearing one on each foot!

    2. My three sons stopped dead in their tracks inside the store when they heard me say "Oh I forgot I need some thongs" LOL!! They told me I was banned from ever saying that word again. Mom they are sandles.

    3. My daughter just cringes when I say Thongs instead of Flip Flops! Seriously, those things they call thongs should be called dental floss instead!

    4. Yup, I used to wear thongs. I no longer where thongs, I wear flipflops.

  2. in the UK in the 70s we had Breck, but I do not recall 'Tame'
'dittos'? not heard that before- we used to have 'Bandas' which were worksheets made on a Banda Spirit Duplicator - and they left your fingers an evil purple colour!
    happy memories!

  3. Oh my! I have a really funny "cream rinse" story. We called it cream rinse and still do! But one day my Mom asked my Dad to stop by the store on his way home and get some cream rinse and hamburger. He came home empty-handed because he went to the meat case and all they had was "ground beef" and he couldn't fine "cream rinse" either, only shampoo and conditioner!

Does anyone remember saying "Ol-i-ver" when someone did something wrong? I wonder if that refers to Oliver Twist? I have no idea, but we always said it.

    1. I remember always wondering why people said Ol-i-ver ha!

    2. Remember Green Acres? The wife, Lisa, always used to say (in her Hungarian accent), "Ol-i-ver!" when she needed her husband to solve a problem.

      Could that be it?

  4. I say cool beans too and have everyone in the house saying it too! I still sometimes refer to my purse as my pocket book? Or is that a term used just in the south? lol

    1. I have said pocket-book my whole life too! And I'm in New England. :o)

  5. Just talking about memios at "bee" last night. LOVED being the student who went to the office to pick them up - and smell that purple ink all the way back to class.

  6. Bellbottom jeans are now flared jeans. Hip hugger jeans are now low rider jeans. lol. Same styles. Different names. So many of the styles and products are the same or making a comeback. They just label them differently.Even alot of songs from my generation are being redintroduced and when I sing along or dance to them, my kids give a really funny type look like I'm not supposed to know or even enjoy that music! lol.

  7. Oh ho, this is too funny. I'm sure I say "dated" things as well, but can't think of one. One thing that will certainly date a lot of us is cameras. I grew up using film, and now of course everyone has gone digital. But I have noticed that a lot of folks don't even use a camera anymore, it's the PHONE!!! So, film is a dinosaur, and cameras may be the next thing out. I wonder what will be next ;-)

  8. Oleo - True story: if you share an old recipe with a younger person, don't use the word oleo - they won't know what it is - be sure to change it to margarine or butter.

    Times are changing - FAST!

  9. Oh dittos!! You reminded of dittos. Loved the smell of the fresh ones lol. I sometimes refer to things as "grody" or "rad" just to get a look or comment from my kids. They usually respond with "really Mom?" lol

    ReplyDelete
  10. Oh Becky, I just sent a recipe to a friend that had oleo in it. Poor thing didn't know what oleo was. And my smarty-pants grandchild wanted to know if I had crayons when I was a kid!

  13. I too have said "thongs" instead of "flip flops" and caused my daughters to laugh. Another one I am finally remembering is not to say "petal pushers" instead of "crop pants." Yes I do remember smelling the purple printed pages when you first got them in class - what was that smell anyway?

    1. chemicals!!! but we loved to smell them!

    2. LOL! We had pedal pushers!!! Daughter had no idea what I was wearing to her garden party the other day, when I got there she said, oh, crops.

  15. All I have to do is talk about my favorite music: Motown!

  16. Right now I can't really think of an expression or word I use to 'date' me, but when I talk of my granddaughter or grandson, I guess that about does it :-)

  17. Love reading these. I know there are a lot more out there but just can't think of them right now. One I do remember is sending a telex at work!! What a pain those were. Now you can just fax.

  18. Spider, do you know what that is??? Cast Iron fry pan and how about Piazza my grandma had one....it was the back porch! Tame, and how about VO5? Prell and then there was Soft Weave toilet paper. My Sister and I have these fun conversations about items we use to have!

  20. My 38 hour per week part time job during undergrad school was working as one of three at a time PBX operators on the college switchboard. It was a fun job where your arms were seldom at rest connecting calls from one student's room to another on campus. Do those things even exist anymore? With the proliferation of cell phones I seriously doubt it.

  21. Loved this. I go to the "show" instead of the movies, and my kids laugh at me. I still say "tape" a movie, even though it is digitally recorded. I am also fond of terms like icebox, instead of fridge, and pocket book instead of wallet, and supper instead of dinner.

  22. Oh I had forgotten about Tame & Breck! But it did jostle my memory. Remember "Protein 21" shampoo, Lemon Up shampoo, oh and Wella Balsam?? Also White Rain & Halo shampoos? Adorn hairspray and Psssssst dry shampoo in a spray can??!
My friend says dungarees for jeans still, and I do remember saying thongs for flip-flops! LOL
The mimeograph machine made those copies with the blue/purple tinge, and you just HAD to smell them!!! Also, new schoolbooks, that smell. Till this day, I still smell certain books, because I know they are gonna have that certain smell! Almost gave you a little "high" to smell the paper! LOLLL!!!

  23. I still have to resist the urge to say thongs rather than flip-flops. ;)

How about the things that aren't so far gone, but kids still don't know about... VHS, typewriters, cassette tapes, etc.

Always fun to talk about records and 8-tracks and watch the looks as you try to explain what those are! LOL

My mom always "ran off" the bulletins for Sunday on the mimeograph. Then came Xerox. Now, it's just "making copies". LOL

And I haven't even hit 40 yet! Imagine what things will be like when I have grandkids. LOL Of course, in my case, with 8 kids ranging from 14 down to due-in-3-weeks, the oldest grandkids will likely talk about things that the youngest don't understand. ;)

  24. I get into trouble cause I always say icebox for the refrigerator. I'm not so old as when they used Iceboxes but I've always heard it called that. And I do remember going to the icehouse to get a block of ice and also the water coolers aka air conditioners and having to hose it down to cool the house. I remember tame and creme rinse. How about Vo5?

  25. A song came on the radio and I started singing along with it which surprised my kids because THEY had never heard it before so they thought it was new and they wondered how I could know it already! I informed them that it was an old song that had been redone by a current singer and told them I would get out the record and play it for them. They said, "What's a record?" Yep, I felt old!

  26. I agree with some of the other comments about old things being new to the younger generation. The new Target commercial is another example. I grew up knowing the song "Allouette" as a children's song, but somehow it didn't get passed on to my kids. When the Target commercial came on the other evening, my teenage daughter commented on how much she liked the music. I think Target hit the mark with that one; it's familiar to "older" people, and catchy and new for the teens.

I've been guilty of "taping" TV shows, listening to "tapes" in the car, picking up "pop" from the store, wearing "thongs" on my feet, and wearing a watch (analog, no less) to keep track of time!

  27. Floppy disks are not that old, right? Why do I feel that when my 8-year old asked, "Mommy, what are floppy disks?" *sigh*

    1. Debbie,

Go to www.orangejulius.com. It looks like Orange Julius has teamed up with Dairy Queen. Apparently, you can get an Orange Julius at a Dairy Queen in Providence. Or is it that you can get Dairy Queen items at Orange Julius? Here on the other side of the country in Stockton, CA, we can get an Orange Julius at the mall. Yum!! That dates us Californians (who were born in Maine), too!

  29. This is great, Karen! I certainly remember all of those hair products! Remember "Gee, Your Hair Smells Terrific?" I remember using the mimeograph when I was a kid and working in the church office! I'm in the midst of changing banks (what a nightmare when you have direct deposits/debits!) and was trying to figure out where my direct deposit bi-monthly salary went...and blurted out "where's my pay??" Who says "pay" anymore - LOLOL!

  30. Do the still have Farrells Ice cream shop in California? Do you remember candy bars changing t0 25 cents from 15 cents?

  31. Oh gosh such memories - Miss Breck was crucial to life back then! I'm not aware of too many "dated" things I say, but the older I get the more I fall back into my "country hick accent" - which my teens find appalling :) Hugs ~ Mary

  32. I remember Breck, loved it.
I remember when "thongs" were something you wore on your feet, not a tiny piece of cloth. "Flib flops" were pancakes gone wrong.
I remember "peddle pushers" were pants, we didn't call them capri's

  33. This morning I was posting to a blog. I thought of typing "like 'Mikey, I like it." but thought the blogger might not understand. I had totally forgotten about Cream Rinse. Another way to date yourself, you no longer can purchase the underwear you love. The company no longer makes them:)

  34. I totally forgot about creme rinse!!! Yes, thongs are flip flops now! I sometimes go back to pocket book and dungarees too!
Those were the days when we had to wear stockings with garter belts, ugh, hated those things, and then pantyhose, wow, the best invention!!!

  36. I still catch myself saying "semaphore" instead of "traffic light", because that is what my parents called them.

  37. I think I dated myself today...I was talking about 3D television technology and how the format is still evolving, much like the VHS and Beta wars...out of the 18 people I was talking to, one person could relate...hmm.

  38. Sometimes I slip and say "fountain pen".

And I had to explain to a younger friend what 45s were.

When someone asks how I'm doing, I still say hunky-dory or peachy-keen.

And my 30-year-old daughter rolls her eyes when I say something about remembering when she was "sweet on" or "had a crush on" an old classmate.

  39. I was just thinking about cream rinse the other day. Not sure why, other than I wondered if there was a difference in cream rinse and conditioner. At a birthday party the other day, my mom pulled out an old rotary phone that she is giving to a friend. She plugged it in and told my 17 year old nephew to try it out. He had NO idea how to dial it! His girlfriend did, but that's because she has used one as a prop in a play. My 8 year old son knew how to use it but that's because we have cartoons from around the 50's here that he watches. The whole thing was hilarious!

  40. This makes me realize how strong a memory and/or sense off smell can be. I can smell Tame and dittos right now. No, that's not the Ditto pants of the '80s...I wish I could say that that is the only Dittos I know of.

We used to just wash our hair and struggle to comb it out. I remember when my mom bought Tame at the store one day. I was so surprised how easy it could be to comb out my hair, and my life was forever changed (a bit dramatic there, but true).

    Love trips down Memory Lane!

  41. I was born in 83 so I don't really remember this, but as soon as I saw it I thought, "So THAT's where 'cream rinse' came from!". ;-) I thought someone in my family made it up, LOL!

I feel the same way about so many things, though... most recently Popples brought a blast from the past. :)

  42. Oh I remember looking at the Breck girl on the back of my mom's Good Housekeeping magazine! I SO wanted to BE her! lol Does anyone remember 'body on tap" shampoo? It had beer in it. My mom let me buy it just ONCE. Not sure why I wanted it tho! HA! Its is funny to hear my 16 yr old DS laugh at his 30 yr old sister phrases! Wonder what he thinks of his 55 yr old MOTHER's! AH! Its good to feel comfortable in one's own skin!
