Thoughts on Thursdays...

Big purse...Little purse...No purse???

I have always carried the purse, tote bag, piece of luggage really, that held all the things my family "might need". You know...the medicine, the hair brush, hair spray, phone charger, coupon book, kitchen sink etc.

Well, I've switch over to a smaller, cross body bag. Hands free, lots of little pockets and I love it!!

I do still have the organized tote bag with everything else in it, but that doesn't go in the store or restaurant with me. Now it's my "car" bag!!

How about you?...big purse, little purse or are you lucky enough to just carry a key chain that holds money, debit card and your driver's license?

Happy Thursday,
~Karen~

  1. I spent years using just a little wallet, about 2" x 3". I was a painting contractor so I didn't want a purse on the jobsite...but now that I am retired I have and over the shoulder type of purse like you and often carry a tote, as well. I made a ton of totes a few years ago, gotta' use them. They are really handy for all kinds of DIY projects.

  2. I have a standard purse, but it rarely comes with me. I tend to be a pocket girl, although that said, there are about ten diapers/wipes combos littered all over my car 'just in case', and if I take the kids out to a park or something, I usually have to bring a large tote with snack, towels, spare clothes, etc.

  3. I only carry a keychain with my debit, money and drivers license :) Sooooooooooo much more convenient than a bag...my son is 5 - if he wants to take something, it's his responsibility to carry it :)

  4. I like a decent sized bag that will carry my wallet, small makeup bag, cell phone, etc. I also need a shoulder strap so I can be hands free. I can never find anything in a really large tote.

  5. The messenger bag usually stays in the car with the book and stuff in it and I carry my wallet and keys. Too many years of heavy bags over my shoulder have taught me a lesson.

  6. I was always a "little purse" girl until I had my kids and th purse grew with the kids. I just recently (my babies are 18yo and 21yo)switched back to a little purse and love it! I still miss some of the "stuff" that I always had at my fingertips in the larger bags I carried but am sure I (and my family)will adjust.

  7. Oh, how I lust after a little purse... you know, the jaunty and adorable itty bitty accessory, rather than the luggage sized utilitarian pieces I seem to be surgically attached to. Yes, I still have kids and a husband who needs me to carry his allergy medicine, and sunglasses, and so on and so on. Not to mention sunscreen, bug spray, trombone mouthpiece and whatever else anyone may need or want. Maybe someday.

  8. I've been using a wallet on a key chain this last past week. The only problem is I keep leaving my glasses in the car since I don't wear them for driving. I keep getting to wherever I am going then have to go back to the car to get them! lol

  9. Funny you should ask. Yesterday we made a trip into town and I took a small purse, just big enough for my cellphone, puffer, and paper and pen, tucked into a large tot bag, which was used for groceries on the way home. I wore shorts so wallet went into my back pocket. The tot also carried my my to do and shopping lists, coupons, and other stuff that was needed to complete my errands along with latest knitting and crocheting projects (yes, I took both). From home or full-time RVing, this is pretty typical for me. Hubby doesn't even bother commenting anymore.

So my question is, "How do men manage with just pockets?"

  11. I used a large purse for years, but when we retired, I switched to a small pack that I could wear. Recently I made a purse - couldn't resist with all the great patterns everywhere. Still getting used to carrying it. Think I'll look for another pattern that I can wear "cross body". I've become used to having my hands free and my money etc. secure!

  12. I've always carried a purse too. I can remember being young and I couldn't wait to be big enough to carry a purse (for real). I'm kind of small in stature, so I've never been able to carry a very big purse, but the smaller ones are looking more appealing lately. Yet, I still like to have my "bag" with all the essentials ;-)

  13. I always carry a purse. Just last week I gave my daughter the gigantic one I was carrying and switched over to one of my old cross body bags. I'm lovin' it!

  14. Karen I started using a large purse when my kids were little so I could carry bottles, diapers and wouldn't have to bring a diaper bag. I still carry a large bag, Dooney & Bourke
backpack. It is so nice to be hands free. My kids and grandchildren call me Inspector Gadget because of what I carry in it. Whatever they ask for I have usually.

  15. My handbag is pretty big now as I am always carrying my camera and at least one extra lens with me, not to mention baby wipes, felt markers, notepads, kiddy snacks, etc, etc. I remember the days, pre kids, when I would just hand my lipstick to my husband to put in his pocket and then we'd go out dancing. Life was very low maintenance then!

  16. Funny, I am watching Good Morning America and they are showing what not to carry with you in your purse!
I just last month found a cute lime green over the should small bag. I have condensed. I love the fact I am hands free. I don't like the fact it smashes my boob! LOL
    Have a great Thurday!

  17. I have a huge purse....all the time! I wish I could go smaller now, but my kiddies are still pretty young. Maybe in a few years. :)

  18. I used to carry a "suitcase" bag with everything under the sun in it. It weighed a ton but I was prepared for anything! I always have a big tote in the car with the extra stuff but generally carry a small bag cross body. Easier on my back, I don't smack things off shelves any more(I did that more than once with my enormous bag) and I love having my hands free. The little bag has room for my wallet, lipstick, tissues and sunglasses. Keys hang on a caribiner off the side.

    Love all those pockets!!!!!

  20. All three! I have a larger shoulder bag that I carry day to day. Inside I have a medium sized wallet, and a coin purse that has an attachment for a key chain. If I'm headed into a garden center or the building supply store (someplace dirty!), I just grab my keys and toss my debit card into the coin purse. But if I'm shopping, I bring the whole bag.

  21. I have had two shoulder surgeries, and still really have shoulder problems, and I'm trying really hard to avoid another shoulder surgery. The doctor told me to reduce the size and bulk of stuff I carry in my purse. That strap on my shoulder is REALLY not doing me any favors. I try to really reduce. I just can't seem to find any cute purses in the store. I really NEED to find a cute purse that can hold all the stuff that I need for my vacation. Phone, money, cards that I have to take. Pen and small notebook. Checkbook..okay no more in the purse LOL. I used to run a daycare, so the kitchen sink was in there! Because I am on vacation I need my purse to be secure from rip offs as well, so fanny packs come to mind, but they are so ugly!!

  22. I have a medium size purse. Holds just enough. But I hate that it is always slipping off my shoulder. I'll have to check into getting one like yours.

  23. Karen, I've never been a purse person. When I do carry one I'm always afraid I'm going to put it down, forget about it and walk away. Most times, I just carry a small wallet or I wear a cross body bag.

  24. I always carry a small purse with just the essentials, but I do have a tote bag in the car.

  25. when carrying a small purse I always feel liberated! No junk, just a lipstick, credit cards, cash, kleenex and my iphone. Everything else is just extra weight!

  26. I carry a small cross body bag for daily use. My hands stay free and you barely notice it's there!

  27. Bum bag, fanny pack, waist pack, whatever you call it, that's what I carry (though over my shoulder most of the time). It's not glamourous, but it holds everything I need plus those things that I rarely have use for, like lipstick and bandaids, still with room to spare.

I don't get carrying an overnight bag on your shoulder. It strikes me as a big black hole for things to get lost in for an era!

  28. My sisters and I hosted a wedding shower. We played a scavenger hunt game using your purse to hunt from. Little did we know that the bride, her mom and her sister did not carry purses!!! We lent them our purses and they won!

  29. Good topic, my mother decided for Christmas that I needed a real purse, not a tote bag or a silly little purse bulging at the seams. So she bought me a I guess designer purse from TJ MAX, it has taken a beating, the lining is torn and it is too full of things, it has too many pockets to stick things into, I'm going to make a new tote bag, while I don't carry a ton of "in case" things, I do occasionally stick my water bottle, book I am reading or other little thing in there, this one came with an umbrella in one of the pockets, its small but heck Florida is having it's rainy season so as long as I put it back after it dries its real handy.

But I like my tote bag so that if I wanna stick something in it that I need that day, to keep my hands free!

  30. I'm like you, I switched too to a smaller purse with lots of zippers and pockets. A place for everything. And I've come to realize I really don't need to carry all that stuff with me all the time. I like the cross body too. Safer and hands free!

  31. I use a medium size now. I think I need a bit bigger one. But when I travel? I pack the purse empty and use a cross the shoulder bag too. Its big enough for my: wallet, camera, phone (if I dont' stuff it in my pocket!), Advil, chapstick and a pack of kleenex. I usually pull a tote back on wheels of some kind and a 'fun' back with projects. This time when I go, the tote will have my Featherweight!

  32. Oh my goodness, I have a couple of purse sizes. Then there is my shoulder strap bag for my applique work. I also have my sewing container (that I do sometimes carry with me)and I'm thinking of making a bag for my crochet. Bags are like shoes, you can't have too many. :D

  33. I've done both. I find the big purse gets heavy and I evenutaly start carrying around too much stuff, but the little purse just cannot hold everything I think I need. ha ha You just never know when you may need that one item, right??

    ReplyDelete
  34. I tried the tote bag with a 'carry in' smaller bag but because I carry at least 2 sets of glasses, I needed something bigger. I'm still at a midsized bag and it works well for me.

  35. I carry a VERY oversized purse, and, its HEAVY! It doesn't help that it usually has a water bottle in it, along with a book or stuff like that.

  36. Are you kidding. I am a freak for pruses and have them in all sizes, shapes, colors and fabric. My closet my call Hoarders to clean them out. Go pruses. LOL

  37. Too funny! I made the switch too! Kids are grown and gone so there's no need to carry "everything but the kitchen sink" anymore. Now I carry a wallet/purse and I have a larger bag I can put my wallet/purse in for longer trips. Please show what you are carrying now! Love to see what you settled on.

  38. I am still trying to decide what to carry! Sometimes I just throw my phone in my pocket and go. Usually, I could survive for a week with what I carry in my purse.
I REALLY hope you write a tutorial about how to add those tabs. I just CANNOT figure it out.

  39. For several years, I didn't carry a purse at all, just a french wallet with an ID pocket and a single key (for my car) and then one year I decided that I wanted a "purse" and now that I'm back to work, I find I need a "tote" for books, walking shoes, cosmetic bag, etc.

I found a wonderful "Baggalini" airline tote that also comes with a small cross-body bag that clips into rings inside the tote. I love it because I can leave the tote with my "non valuables" and take the little bag into the store!

  40. I like my hands free if possible. The strap is a necessity. Big or little depends on the place I am going. I am with you on that.

  41. Karen you must of been reading my mind. Just recently on holidays my husband complained about carry on luggage and surely I could do with out it, so said on the way home I put the carry on bag in my suitcase and checked it in.Oh you should of heard the wails when no I can't carry your glasses, your eletronic book, your cell phone, your diary and your jacket just in case its cool when we land, the freedom of not being the pack horse is very liberating and now I will never again carry a big bag or back pack again.....go me
