Hi everyone! I know you've seen this I Spy Quilt recently in the apple core assembly post and the binding tutorial, but I'm here today to show you how to make a matching game to go along with your I Spy Quilt.
An I Spy Quilt is made of novelty print fabrics which have recognizable objects on them. This particular quilt is a baby gift for a new born. In the beginning, the quilt is great for on the floor play time, napping and playing. When the child is a little older, they can play the I Spy game…"I spy a fish. I spy an apple" etc.
I was thinking, why not make another educational game for the quilt...a matching game.
The steps are easy to make the little squares to match your quilt. Come in and see…
You will need…
Heat and Bond comes rolled in a package and you can buy it in most all sewing and craft stores. It fuses 2 fabrics together.
Cut the Heat and Bond to fit your backing fabric. Place the rough side of the Heat and Bond down on the WRONG side of the fabric.
Iron on according to the directions.
Let cool and the peel the paper away.
You can see the shiny fusible web on the back of the fabric.
Now place the wrong side of your squares on that shiny side to iron them permanently to the pink backing fabric.
This part is important for the sake of your iron…
DO NOT IRON ON TOP OF ANY EXPOSED SHINY FUSIBLE WEB.
I placed the paper I peeled away back on top of everything. You can also use a scrap piece of fabric.
Iron according to the directions. This will fuse the squares to the backing.
Let cool and cut the squares apart. If you notice the fabric coming apart, iron one more time.
All the I Spy fabrics are now playing pieces…all with the same backing fabric, like a deck of cards.
If you have extra time and fabric, you can make 2 of every novelty fabric. That way it's now a MEMORY GAME all in itself.
You mix up all the fabric "cards" and turn them over so the backing fabric is up. The child now flips over 2 cards at a time trying to match 2 cards with the same I Spy print. If they don't match, they must turn them back over and the next player takes a turn. The key is to try and remember where those objects were to match it on their next turn. They can also play alone too.
Here is the matching game with all the pieces on each apple core block.
Fun for kids of any age…
I have one more post for this quilt. I know…enough already, LOL
I am attempting to make a quilt label for the back of the quilt, which also doubles as a pocket to hold the game pieces.
Wish me luck!!
Thanks for stopping by,
~Karen~

You will need…
- squares or any shape of each fabric you have in your I Spy Quilt. I cut mine at 2 1/2 inches
- fabric for the backing ( I used the scraps I had left over from the backing of the baby quilt.
- Heat and Bond iron-on fusible web

Timing is perfect as I am in the process of making an I Spy quilt. Matching games are educational for the 2-3-4 year olds. Great way for adults to interact and give positive reinforcement when a match is made. The matching cloth pieces give this quilt another dimension. Much better than a plastic game. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteInspired! :) And I have no doubt the label/pocket will come out JUST FINE! LOL Great project , thanks for the extra bonus idea!! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! I will keep this idea tucked away for my next baby quilt project. Love the idea of making a pocket to keep the games pieces in order. Looking forward to how you make it! Enjoy your creative day!
ReplyDeleteI would cut the pieces apart with pinking shears or zig zag stitch the edges, just to help with the wear and tear as the pieces get played with/handled. I love the idea of the pocket to keep the pieces in one place! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! I really think this is a fabulous idea. Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteI really like this idea! I've been collection fabrics for an I Spy quilt and I'll keep this in mind when I start making it. I'm looking forward to seeing how you make the quilt label/pocket.
ReplyDeleteHow do you keep doing this?! Great idea, thanks for sharing your gifts with us all ... again :)
ReplyDeleteJust so clever you are!
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love this idea! blessings, marlene
ReplyDeleteYou are so clever! What a cool idea. I need to look through my old fabrics and see which ones can be used for an I Spy Quilt.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the idea!
