Swinging Towel Bar for Sewing

I love thrift stores, consignment shops and flea markets. You can find the most interesting things.

This antique wooden towel bar is one of them. I bought this years ago, but kept it tucked away because I had no place for it in my kitchen.

The three bars swing on a hinge, so it can be folded out of the way when not in use. (The nerdy side of me is going to come out now...The Walton's had one to the right of their kitchen sink. That's probably why I bought it. Lol)

Well, it's not in my kitchen...it's in my sewing room!

I mounted it underneath the edge of my cutting table.

See it off to the right, flat against the table?

Swings out whenever I need it. What do I use it for on my cutting table?

Fabric!! You know those times when your cutting table is covered with "stuff" and that nicely ironed fabric you are trying to cut is a mess and buried somewhere.

Well, hang it right next to you on this towel rack and you will always find it and it will stay wrinkle free!!

They sell new versions of these too, so look in kitchen supply stores or online...like Amazon or eBay.

Here's a metal version.

This swinging towel rack is similar to the drying rack idea I shared not too long ago...just a better space saver.

So, the next time you are out thrifting or at a flea market, don't pass up an old fashion swinging towel bar. You may not need it for your kitchen, but it will be perfect for your sewing room!!

Have a great day,
~Karen~

  5. My father-in-law made me one years ago but it is too big for my kitchen. It's in the sewing room just waiting to be hung!

  7. Also would be good next to the ironing board to hang small items after pressing.

  11. Another great idea! I also use an over-the-door towel holder on my creative room door to hang fabrics I would love to see made into quilts! Adds a bit of color and inspiration! Thanks for sharing this idea! Vickie

  12. Love your towel bar Karen, especially because it's wood - not as slippery as metal ones! I'll be looking for a wood one!

  13. Nice idea, may I make a suggestion though? Keep something handy to put over the ends of the rods when not folded into the table. Especially the metal ones - they *hurt* when they get rammed into your leg. Worse is - under the table like that is just the right height to get them in the face or eye of little kids or big dogs.

Poke a hole in an old tennis ball or similar. Depending on the bar, maybe glue big wood beads on permanently?

  14. I have seen these, before and I love your idea on doing this, now I am going to have to get one. Not so long ago I saw one that was much larger, all wood and it was used as a quilt hanger, here is one I found real quick with a google search, http://tildastwistedlife.blogspot.com/2012/07/woodnt-it-be-loverlyand-quilters-are.html. I love this idea.

  15. Great idea! Off to buy a drying rack. I already have a swing out towel holder in my summer kitchen. I bought it because I have a vintage reproduction huge sink in there and it reminded me of the one my Grandma had.

  16. This is just such an injenious idea, I absolutly love when a new and unusual use can be found for something so simple. But never-the-less so useful. Thank You.
