Find a Friend Friday Linky Party and Ask a Question...

Hi everyone! Last Friday, I combined both of my Friday features on the same day and it worked great, so let's try it again. Welcome to "Find a Friend Friday Linky Party" and "Ask the World a Question".

Add your blog to the linky party below AND ask all your questions in the comment section! Details for each are below.

Hope you can join us!

Question and Answers

Here's how it will work...
  • post your question in the comment section. You can ask anything at all...from sewing, cooking, family, vacationing in other countries, crafting, blogging, photography, decorating...anything goes
  • everyone will read the question
  • if someone has a helpful answer, that person will click the "REPLY" button right under THAT particular question and post the answer!!
  • that way everyone can read the answer too!!
  • this is helpful for those who don't like to share their email address or who are "no replies" and there isn't an email address to respond to
  • just come back to this post to see if your question has been answered!!

Find a Friend Linky Party

This is easy to participate in. You are just linking to your own blog. No Pressure!! No projects to sew, no furniture to paint, no cookies to bake or pictures to take. You are just sharing your site and then friends will stop by for a visit.

  • at the very end of this post, click on the "click here to enter" link...way at the end, after the last blog that has been linked. See it way down there at the bottom?
  • copy and paste or just type in your blog address...example: http://sewmanyways.blogspot.com
  • enter title of link...your blog name or phrase to grab attention
  • add a photo of you, your profile picture or your blog button or whatever you think will grab some one's attention...(I'm thinking a picture of a big piece of chocolate cake, but that's just me LOL)

That's it...super easy. Have fun checking in on all the new blogs. Come back, because more are added all the time!

Don't forget to check out the comment section too...there are ALWAYS great questions and helpful answers.

Happy Blogging,
~Karen~

  1. Hi Amy,

It's best to learn how to use a rotary cutter before you delve into a quilt. After that I think the Turning Twenty pattern or the Yellow Brick Road Pattern is the easiest to start quilting. You can also start by making one square. Sometimes shops offer a Saturday Sampler program and this teaches you how to make blocks and use tools.

  2. Has anyone ever participaqted in a 'house swap' for a holiday? I have been thinking about it for years, but never got brave enough to try it! Thanks.

    1. Never have but it sounds like it would be fun, if not at least no expense for your accommodations!. Ever see the move "The Holiday" ? A New York girl and an English girl switch homes and it was great fun, good movie.

    2. I work in a dental office and chat with my patients all the time. One family house swaps each year with a different family in France. They love it and highly recommended it to my boss when he asked about it. They had nothing negative to say.
Hope this helps. Not sure if they go through a company or website that acts as a middle man. I can ask if you'd like.

  3. Hi everyone! We've been crafting for fun for ages and are thinking about setting up our first etsy shop / doing craft fairs. Any tips? Especially on how to price your items? There seems to be so much out there already, is it worth it? Thanks!

    1. I would suggest reading the Etsy site page that talks about how to set up a shop. For specific questions, the following website will answer all your questions above as they specialize in teaching creatives everything you need to know about running a business on Etsy. Skim through their archives for a wealth of information: http://www.handmadeology.com/. Good luck.

  4. I would encourage you to take a class because there are techniques taught that would ensure your success. Craftsy provides great classes and you can watch them anytime anywhere and go at your own pace. Here is a link to their site http://www.craftsy.com/classes/quilting/all?_ct=sbqii-sqjuweho-jefys&_ctp=quilting/all
I believe that it was Angela Walters who said that her first block was a 9 patch. I am a self taught quilter and then took some classes which I really wish I had taken in the first place. Best wishes on your quilting journey.

  5. Q: Can pressed wood/particle board furniture be painted and if so, what type of paint should be used and how should the surface be prepped for painting? I have several different pieces of inexpensive, put-it-together yourself furniture that are different colors. I would like to paint them all the same color so they coordinate. But I wasn't' sure if it could be done or how to go about it. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

    1. Yes particle board can be painted, but it needs to be primed first with a good primer. I've heard some say to paint with an oil base paint and others say an acrylic base. Perhaps talk to someone at your local home improvement store first.

    2. You can use Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint and you don't have to prime at all...it's fabulous. There are also some homemade chalk paint recipes on Pinterest.

    2. It might help if you had a thumbnail photo along with the link, like here on Karen's linkys. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words.

  7. The Rail Fence is the easiest block in my opinion. Here a free pattern http://www.quilterscache.com/R/RailFenceBlock.html

  8. Hi, I have never quilted, and am thinking of making a picnic rug with simple fat quarters cut into four squares - so creating a big block out of squares. I am conscious that if I fail even by a couple of millimetres on each square by the end I will be completely out of alignment. How do you avoid this? Thanks Vicky

    1. Oh Vicki,

Don't worry, you are making something for your family to use at a picnic, not a quilt that is going to be judged in a show. They are going to love the memories they make having picnics on that quilt, and if you get a few "tucks" those are "love tucks" where you tucked in extra love. Then there is the theory of the galloping horse, if you were to hang it on your front door and go by it on a galloping horse would you see the mistake.

Go for it, I have also seen them made with purchased bandannas simply sewn together, they come out pretty good.

    4. As Nanette said, don't worry about the mistakes or being a little off. You will love your picnic blanket regardless. I made a beach blanket a few years ago and love using it every time we go to the beach, http://amylizstudio.wordpress.com/2009/08/25/beach-blanket/

  9. Amy, I was recntly asked to teach a friends husband how to quilt, I started him out with: cutting accurately, sewing and accurate 1/4 inch seem, then the first quilt is going to be a chinese coin as there are no diagonal seams and no seams to match up. Good luck and welcome to the club.

  10. I've tried starting a house building blog, but I'd like to keep it private for friends and family. With blogspot, I tried restricting it to "only these readers" but they couldn't access it. Then I tried password protection, but you could still get through without using the password. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  11. Hi This is the first time I have linked up for Find a Friend Friday -is there a Find a Friend button I can use on my blog? looked and looked but don't seem to find one...!

  12. I'm wondering if anyone knows why, on other bloggers' blog lists, there's no thumbnail beside the link to my blog. I don't think I've done anything to stop a thumbnail showing but I must have done because it happens on everyone's blog lists.

Here's a link to a blog with my blog (my blethering blog) in her blog list - http://gillymakes.blogspot.co.uk/. Every other blogger has a thumbnail (at least those on Blogger do) but not me. I want my thumbnail back! Any ideas how to sort that?

    1. I don't know if this is the answer, but if you are on the "layout" page in Blogger, up in the left hand corner there is a box that says "Favicon". Click to edit it you can upload a picture, and that is what will show up when you leave a comment etc.

    2. Hi Anne,
The list on someone's side bar is a gadget that can be added to show their favorite blogs...it's called Blog List in the layout section of the dashboard. Just click Add Gadget. The list either shows the other blog's icon, title of the most recent post, snippet of the most recent post, thumbnail or just the date of most recent post. That blog owner has chosen the thumbnail option. It shows the first picture in YOUR post as the thumbnail, but I'm not sure why some show and some do not. It could be they way you write your post or add your pictures. Do use the Blogger format to write your post or do you copy and paste them in there from say Live Writer or another form. It may not be reading your photos.

    3. Thanks Katherine and Karen for replying. :o)

When I post my photos in my posts, I use the HTML codes for them from my Photobucket account - I don't load them through Blogger. I've always done it that way as I know a wee bit of HTML and I feel I have more control of their placement, size etc. if I do it that way. A thumbnail of a photo always used to show up in other people's blog lists but now I'm wondering if something has changed. Photobucket did a re-do of its whole site a few months ago and it could well be that that's making my thumbnails not show up any more.

I'm not going to change the way I load my photos so, if that's why it's not working, I'll just have to accept it. Drat and double drat!

Thanks for helping. I really appreciate it. :o)

  13. I agree with Robyn, try Craftsy - specifically the 2012 Block of the Month class with Amy Gibson. It's free. I'd never quilted before either and she shows you how to a variety of blocks, even ones that don't require a pattern, like strip blocks! It's great. Good Luck!

  17. Here is a question for any of you readers who are familiar with re-upholstering furniture. How do I add a nice cording to the seam? I am using a very narrow foot to sew the cording into the fabric, then when it is time to add that cording to the edge of the cushion (for example) the seam of the cording shows.
If you have a suggestion or a web site that I can view (even better!) let me know. I don't want to have this look project look "tacky"... thanks!!!!
