I love Tool Time, but I also love a thrifty Tool Time. This little project is so easy and starts with a cheap, cheap cutting board from the Dollar Tree Store...
Cutting Board Luminaria
These flexible cutting boards come 2 per package for $1.00 in the Dollar Tree's kitchen section. I'm sure other stores carry them too.
This is a great deal with 2 per package.
You can get 2 large luminaria or 4 small for $1.00
Here's all you need...
- plastic cutting board
- hole punch
- metal brads
On both short ends, measure a center dot 1/2 inch from the edge and 2 more near the corners.
Trace holes on the other end, so they are in the same spots.
Punch with hole punch.
Bring together to form a tube.
You will need metal brads or screws with turning nuts to secure.
Add brads to each hole.
Close up
Inside view of brad folded out to secure.
The tube fits perfectly over a candle jar.
You could also punch decorative holes all over if you'd like.
Ok, the candle in this picture looks like the whole thing is going to burst into flames, but it really was just a small flame. Lol
Tall one...
Short one...
To make a short one, all you need to do is cut the cutting board in half lengthwise.
Punch 2 holes and secure the same way.
The short ones are great for the walkway for holiday luminaries. Much safer than the bags.
Little glass votives are great for this. The tube prevents the wind from blowing out the candle.
Great for a bedside night light too!!
No candle...just a battery powered tap light!!
You can also use the battery powered candles to be safe.

ReplyDeleteLove these. Now about the ones outside.....it may keep the wind from blowing out the candle but what keeps the wind from blowing it away. I would think you would need a larger jar to keep it anchored. I have some of the cutting boards, and the brads so I will be trying them right away....well I will finish my coffee first. :-)

There is something so magical seeing the paper bags aglow with candles lined up along walkways and along walls. There are many stunning displays all over the state. ReplyDeleteKaren, I love luminarias! Last year I invested in a couple of cases of canning jars. I put sand in the bottom and a tea light in each one. They are my luminarias! Tea lights are so cheap I can put them on as many nights as I like. I use my long grill lighting lighter to get them all glowing. I just take the tea lights out and put the jars back on the cardboard case for storage. You can stack them easily and no need to cover.

Just a few days after reading this post, I bought a CL pendant light from the 50s. The kind that has a plastic insert between the bulb and metal cutout exterior. It glows when you turn it on, so very cool. Well, the old plastic tube was browned and not very pretty anymore. Solution?? Your plastic cutting map luminaria!!! The cutting mat works beautifully and produces such a soft glow. That light is the vintage bomb! Thank you!!
