Tool Time Tuesday...Binder Clip Key Chain

Hello everyone. Here's another quick transformation of an ordinary item into something helpful. I've seen other uses for binder clips online, but this is one I love for my purse. I think I saw this in Real Simple magazine

I am always looking for my keys on the bottom of my purse, so here's a quick solution...

Binder clips from an office supply.

If you squeeze the silver arms of the clip...

they pop off easily to add what ever you'd like.

Now take all your keys, clickers and store reward cards.

Car keys on one side.

House keys and cards on the other.

All put back together.

Clips easily to your purse...inside or out. Clip them on the outside when you're home for a quick grab, but clip them on the inside when you're shopping, to keep them safe.

Never search for them again.

Here's another tip...my house key and my work key are the same shape. I did have those rubber covers on them to distinguish them apart, but they get all yucky looking.

How about your favorite nail polish. If it chips, just add another coat!!

The clips come in so many sizes and colors, so you can find one that fits your style and needs.

You can also spray paint the clip part. Color code one key for one clip, so you can easily see it on the key chain board.

Have fun with it!!

Happy Tuesday,
~Karen~

  1. Ha, ha, Lydia and I just did the nail polish coding for my school set of keys this school year! I have always did a sticker and tape before this, but the nail polish is more permanent even when the edges get worn off, the color is still recognizable. Besides, she had neat nail colors like blue and green, mine are only red and purple, lol!

  3. I'm a long time fan of your blog but this tool tip worries me a bit. It makes the keys awfully easy to steal. I'd suggest clipping them to the edge of an internal pocket instead.

  5. Karen that is a great idea. I blogged about losing my keys two hours from home a couple of weeks ago. If only I had known about this very simple but obviously effective trick, it would have saved my some stress!! Will be doing it now.

  7. Great way to keep up with keys. I can never find my keys in the bottom of my purse either. I am going to make myself on right now!

  8. I love this idea! The clip lets you attach your keys securely inside your purse (or wherever) and also makes them easy to locate.

  9. I use a very short lanyard-type thing that has a ring that I put on my purse and then it's easy to clip the keys on every time I get out of the car until I need to unclip them to use them. I love your idea though for those who can't find something like I have (wish I knew what it was called!).

  12. One comment to make about the key rings, check with your mechanic, if you have one. I used to keep the loyalty cards I used the most on my key ring with the office, house and car keys. After an oil change, he handed the keys back to me and told me to remove the loyalty cards. "You need to check the weight of your keys. All this dangling weight will, eventually, pull the starter out of alignment just enough that you'll need to pay for a realignment. It's cheaper than a new starter but some mechanic will tell you you need a new starter when it's just out of alignment due to the weight of your keys." I now keep the house, office and car keys on one key chain and my loyalty cards on another. We ladies tend to keep a lot of stuff at the ready and that includes what we put on a key ring.

    1. My nephew, who is a mechanic, said the same thing. I have three keys on my key ring...and that's it. And I have a ten-year-old with 175K miles and the original starter!

    2. Deb, my daughter shared the same information with me. Unfortunately, it was after she had to pay for a new starter. Years of my heavy keys and then hers were NOT kind to the ignition switch.
      Heed Deb's advice, folks.

  14. Great idea! I use those clips in all sizes for many things. One of the best I saw on Pinterest is to clip it to the edge of my desk to hold my cords out of the way. Cheap and useful!

  17. The only issue I can see with this is that it makes it easier for someone to steal your keys.

  18. I wonder how much damage I would do to my debit card if I clipped it in the clip, after I stopped for gas again last night I lost my debit card when I put it in my pocket with my keys. This is the second one I have lost this year!!

  24. Brilliant! We use a binder clip on the mail key at the office so no interns take it home on accident, but I didn't think of using one on my own keys! Thanks!!
