Target Tablecloth Update...

Remember my Target sale items I told you about last week? Well, I worked on the tablecloth today. One 70 inch round, linen tablecloth yielded three 18 inch pillows, a lined tote bag and I still have scraps left over to make some coasters, eye glass case and another small bag.

All that for $3.74...not bad!

I made three of these pillows. Two for the couch and one for the chair.

Here's the tote bag. The tablecloth was almost like duct cloth, so very sturdy for a bag. If you want to make one for yourself, I used my eye glass case tutorial. I just cut larger pieces of fabric the size I wanted and added the handles on each of the short ends of the fabric. Click here for the eye glass case tutorial.

I lined it with muslin.

The bag was a quick sew and I used every piece of the tablecloth...even the hem.

I cut them hem off close to the seam and used that for the handles. There is the raw edge, but I'm just using this to carry my books or magazines in the car.

I put together a short tutorial on hand sewing a blind hem on the pillow I made...or at least what I call a blind hem.

I'll be right back with tha tutorial,

  1. Okay that is truly the most awesome use of a tablecloth I think I have ever seen! Had to be some sort of record or something.

  6. This is great, I even like the print on the fabric and 100% cotton is wonderful, what great projects, all for under $4.00, minus the pillow forms.

  7. Great! So clever and practical! I love getting great deals on Target's clearance racks too. I have two sets of place mats that I got for practically nothing that I am going to use for something clever too...I just haven't figured out what yet. I'm leaning towards tote bags just because I love designing and making them...and using them too!

  8. Beautiful. I LOVE how it looks as pillows!
I have been drooling over that table cloth for a while now. Unfortunately our Target doesn't have them marked down so low.

  9. Super clever recycling. That would make a nice sturdy market bad. Good job!

  13. That duck cloth was a wonderful find! Great repurposing idea too. I have a cotton skirt I made that is wrong in so many ways for my figure type, but I still love the fabric. Now you've got me thinking...

  14. LOVE IT! I just bought TWO of these last week to use for fabric - I was totally going to make pillows out of them, too! :-)

  15. I just found your blog today and now I really wish I could sew! I bought the same table cloth (only rectangle) and the matching napkins on clearance. I planned on making them into a no sew valance and well... I'm not sure... I was hoping to sweet talk my BFF's mom into sewing some pillows for me. Maybe I should just have her teach me how to sew... You have wonderful ideas!

  16. Thanks for the Target update! I bought two curtains, I mean tablecloths, a brown duvet set, and a set of sheets for less than $25 today....SO excited! Should be enough fabric for a pillow or two left over from the curtains. I LOVE your bag too!
This is my first visit...I'll be back...love your ideas :)

  17. Just a suggestion Karen, but couldn't you have made a sham type pillow cover using the hemmed edges so a zipper or Velcro wouldn't be needed? I often do that--it's so much easier.
