Tool Time Tuesday...Door Design Wall

Happy Tuesday one and all. Whether you play with fabric when designing a quilt or sewing a craft project or your children/grandchildren play with shapes and letters...today's Tool Time will help with all your projects and it's hidden away behind your door! The door is the best place for this...it's out of sight when you aren't using it, great for a room that's short on wall space and really I think everyone has a door!

I think we all have wreath hangers around, especially right after Christmas. I bought these 2 in the clearance section for only 68 cents a piece.

They're adjustable too.

You don't need the adjustable kind...any 2 wreath hangers will do.

I wish these weren't clear for the photo...

but you can still see that I've placed one on each side over the top of the door.

Now you can place an old curtain rod, pvc pipe, yard stick etc through a hem of a piece of flannel from the fabric store, a flannel sheet or a flannel backed table cloth that you have cut to fit your door. I have a previous post on how to make one, so click here to bring you to that post.

The hooks on the wreath holder keep the rod from falling off even when the door is opened and closed.

Here is your quick and easy design wall/play wall!

The flannel will hold most all fabric on there to design your new project.

It's also great to audition fabrics to see which ones go together. This is especially helpful when you place them on the design wall and step away to get a better look. Sometimes fabrics look great up close when you're picking them out, but not so great when you stand back and take a second look.

If you are a mom or grandma and have little ones around when you are sewing, crafting or cooking, this is also a great place for kids to play. Take pieces of flannel or felt and cut them into shapes and letters and let them play on their own design wall while you get a little play time in your self! The kids can play with so many different shapes made with fabric...
  • letters
  • numbers
  • geometric shapes
  • states or countries
  • animals
  • flowers
  • food
  • cars and trucks
  • holiday shapes

This design or play wall is great in any room. It's easy to take down, roll up and put away or just leave it hanging up behind the door permanently.

Happy designing or playing...hmmm I think that's the same thing isn't it!

  12. I never seen those wreath hangers before. I'm loving it! I need to see if I can find some.

This is similar to my design wall which I am currently hanging on sliding closet doors (http://theunfocusedlife.blogspot.com/2010/08/my-design-wall-for-quilters.html). But, I'm really liking this idea for a regular door and just may make one someday for small projects! Thanks!

My sister and I are going to have a week on our blog (honeybeebzz.blogspot.com) on living/crafting in small spaces or with limited space soon and I would love to feature this idea. Let me know if that's okay and if maybe you have some additional ideas for a guest post?? Thanks! ~Melissa

  24. I like the idea! The items are so adorable. I'd like to do it in my little home office. My husband helped me finish the project. I've been inspired by the rooms akin to Charlotte meeting rooms and Charlotte, NC office spaces. I want it more spacious yet functional, so my husband used light paint colors.

  25. Nice idea! I think it will look great if you could change the color of your door. The design will be emphasize when you do that.

  26. That is really a great craft for your door. If I have time, I might try to do that kind of thing.

  27. I would personally want to install this door play wall on my son’s bedroom door. I’ll choose green as the wall color, and then I’d put basic educational stuff all over it like the alphabet, numbers and pictures of animals for him to be able to quickly learn. Hmm…What do you guys think?

  28. Just found your "blog" site. Love It - Thanks for the great ideas! You are a woman after my own heart -- I love to organize. I loved your Window Design Wall idea and, in fact, had planned on doing something similar for my closet door. I then saw this one using wreath hangers -- I planned on making mine with the flannel-backed vinyl tablecloth but instead of the temporary aspect of the wreath hangers I was going to use small, round cape cod curtain rods that slip into brackets. (Only the brackets would stay on door) as I do not have any windows (upstairs bonus room with slant ceilings). What are you thoughts on recycling plastic gallon milk bottles? I'd love to reuse in my sewing room constructively. And I have planned for a while to do the magazine holder from cereal boxes, but we do oatmeal more than dry cereal -- any other idea? Keep up the good work. I don't "blog" so not sure if I selected the correct "profile"? Judy N
