Easier For Annie...Elevated Dog Dish

This is Annie! Most of you have seen Annie before. She is our 10 year old Labrador...cute as a button, but getting older. Remember I made the pvc gate for her, because she can't go upstairs anymore. Well, now I made something else for her, so it's easier for to eat.

I found this old picnic basket at a consignment shop for $2.00. It's held plants, old newspapers, toys etc. The top is a cheaper plywood and kind of crooked, so I didn't mind cutting it up.

I used 2 containers that I knew would hold her food and water.

Traced the containers on a cardboard template the shape of the top of the basket.

Cut and trace the shapes on the top.

Make sure you trace it straighter than I did!! lol

The tools you'll need are a drill with a larger bit...

a hand held jig saw, small hand saw or a man to do it for you.

Drill holes at the corner of each area you want to cut out.

The holes need to be big enough for the jig saw blade to fit it.

Carefully cut out the shapes. This top was a cheap plywood, so it splintered alot. I'll have to fill it in with wood glue and either paint or stain it.

Drop the bowls in to make sure they fit.

Inside the basket, I place a canvas bag and filled it up with Annie's dog food.

Just take out the dish and scoop out her dinner!!

and it's all set with her water too. (I really need to polyurethane the top to 1. make it look better and 2. to seal out the water she spills.

I took this picture in my sewing room, so she couldn't figure out why her food was in there.

Once I moved it to her spot, she was good to go. The bowls are much higher up now and easier on her neck. I saw an elevated dog dish that looked like a wooden stool for $125.00! Yikes. My $2.00 and some crooked cutting will do just fine!

Enjoy your day,
~Karen~

  8. You are just so clever. Just an idea, but it you put some plexy glass on it, you can wipe it up easier....just a thought...love love love it.

  10. Karen, That is a great idea for Annie. Our family dog, a chocolate lab named Billie(after Billie Holliday), just turned 11. There isn't anything we wouldn't do to make her golden years as soft as possible.

  11. I've seen those ridiculously expensive elevated dishes on clearance at Ross, but not for $2.00! Good work, even if it is cheap plywood on the top. Painting it would be even cuter, maybe with her name on it even...

  12. That is a really, really clever idea. Keep your eyes open for contests 'cause I think you could win with that. And I'm sure Annie loves it!

  13. cool idea, and stylish!
My great big dog is also 10 (and getting tired) but no way I can keep him downstair if I am up, who will watch over me? He takes his job so very seriously!!!

  14. We did this for our older Dalmatian also, but we used an old plastic milk crate. She also has to take pills for arthritis, but is much happier with her bowl higher.

  15. Now that's really thinking! Great idea!

  16. Very inventive and looks good too. Annie won't notice if the lines are a bit crooked but she will more than appreciate the lift when it's easier on her neck.
    Well done you!

  24. Karen, you did a great job with this !! Definitely easier for Annie. I always bought tall feeders for my dogs, but now, thanks to you... I know how to make them !!!

  26. Adorable idea. Instead of "fixing" the wood top... why don't you just cover it with a piece of a vinyl tablecloth. Just cover and tack it under the lid to hold it in place. It would make for easier cleanup as well.... you could even match it to a kitchen tablecloth or color theme.

  27. I LOVE this idea!! I have a beagle/jack russel mix that we lift her water on a upsidedown bowl so she won't swalow to much air with her water. So now I will look for a picnic basket to help her out. Thanks again! :o)

  31. Thank you for sharing "Annie". I remember her well from your "Gate" post.

We feed our three Weimaraners wotj "elevation" too and I understand it's easier for a dog's digestion. Except I'm not as talented as you to think of using such an awesome basket.

I use the hearth (did I spell that right?) at the fireplace.

  32. How nice of you to do that for your
sweet pet. I just hope you keep it
filled and she doesn't spy that
food through that clear bowl. Talk
    about confusion.LOL.":O)

  33. What a great idea and the basket is so pretty. I have to remember to make one for my Lab too.

  34. This is really cool. I like that idea. Its so pretty. Wonder how long it will take Annie to figure out how to get to the bag of dog food inside of the basket. My Dog Nala would figure it out in no time. Not that she is the smartest. But boy She will do anything for food. lol.

  35. Oh Karen, you have a wonderful old lady!! And people say you can't learn an old dog new tricks hihi! Our Yvette on the other hand is 2,5 years, bet she would lift the top and start eating hihi!! She is always eager to point out in which cupboard her food is stored hihi!! Great job on the basket!!! Nodge from Yvette for Annie! Daniëlle
hahahaha the word verif is "height"!

  37. Hi Karen,
What a nice thing to do for Annie (who looks like she might be Brynn's cousin). I see many picnic baskets becoming dinner tables for doggies in the near future.

  38. Hmm I'm really liking this idea, I'm sure my 9 year old 100-pound black lab will be needing something similar soon.

How do you keep her from prying off the top with her nose and pigging out? Or maybe she actually behaves herself, and it's only MY ornery dog that does things like that!

  39. Karen, I really love this idea and I have one of those baskets hanging around here I could use. My black lab, Kelly, is twelve and could use one, but then the other dogs would want one too.
Just a thought... instead of the polyurethane top, use oilcloth or even a plastic placemat. Cutting the holes the same way you did for the wood (sans jigsaw).

  40. What a great idea! Sweet for you to do this for her.

  41. Now that is a smart idea. I should have my husband build me one that stores food. Tired of the big plastic bin in the kitchen;)

  44. Annie has the sweetest owner. Looks great and I am sure she is enjoying it!

  45. Thats just genious, and so pretty too! I've seen the elevated dishes at the pet store, and they are crazy expensive! I am trying to think if I do could something like this (a little less high) for my cat, he gets food and water everywhere, and I'm always spilling his food from the bag. For Peggi, I bet you could drill a hole and hook a lock onto the front to stop the lid from being lifted. Or could use a rubbermaid container with a locking lid.
Thanks so much for this idea!

  46. Annie is adorable!!!! Our yellow lab, Holly, turns 10 in Oct....precious little fur-babies they are!!!

  50. I've been wanting an elevated 'feeding station' for my sweet Cooper, but have held off because I don't want to spend the money (and he's young, so he can handle it on the floor). I love your idea! I'm going to start looking for a cheap pic-a-nic basket (<--please read that part in a Yogi Bear voice for best effect) LOL. Thanks for sharing!!
