Organized Winter Coat Closet…Tips and Tricks

Hi everyone! Living in the northeast is wonderful for all the changes in the seasons. However, winter can be rough and this year is no exception. We've had a few snow storms and temps in the single digits, so we need to dress in layers!

Here is the storm we had yesterday and another big one on the way Wednesday!

In a house with 5 adults, winter attire is everywhere. Here's where we store all the must haves…

Come on in for a few organizing tips.

The best tip for heavy winter coats is to invest in wooden coat hangers. Big heavy coats keep their shape better on wooden hangers. The flimsy plastic hangers droop and usually break under the weight.

Winter coats can be expensive, so a few extra dollars for the wooden hangers is well worth it.

Below the coats is the best place for all the hats, gloves, mittens and scarves. Easy access near the coats!

I put together one of those wire racks that you can customize to fit your space, but any shelving system or low bookcase will work.

Having a shelf to keep the boxes or containers separated helps when sliding the boxes out. If you have the boxes stacked up on each other, it can be a pain. Sliding an individual box out makes it so much easier for everyone.

Labeling all the boxes is the key organizing.

Separating them and labeling each box helps when you have adult sizes, children sizes and lots of different winter gear to store.

This makes it really easy for my husband to find just what he needs!

We have lots of winters scarves too…lots

The post I shared last week for a scarf hanger was for silky scarves you would wear as part of your outfit. The scarves in those boxes are the big thick, knitted scarves you need for shoveling. Lol

I know it's not winter everywhere in the world, but you can always take these tips and tricks to store any seasonal items in your home. Remember…labeling is the key to a sane house!!

  1. You must have been looking in my coat closet to know how much I needed this post.

  2. OMG ... you mean there are two MORE boxes of scarves??!! Just kidding. Living in snowy, cold winter conditions too, I had several warm scarves as well and we have sure needed them this winter. Your advice for the boxes on individual shelves is a great solution and labelling, especially for MEN, is invaluable..."honey, where's my hat? ... honey, I can't find my gloves ... honey, did you move the car keys????"

  4. We have a coat closet with a hanging rack over the door. Coats we don't use daily are on wooden hangars and daily coats go on the rack at the door. Gloves, hats, scarfs go into a nifty little cabinet I found years ago that has 6 drawers and a door with shelves. Names are labeled on each drawer so everyone knows where to find their stuff. Great organization tips!

  6. Where do you store all of your boots and shoes? We have six in this house and between coats and shoes there is little room for everything else!

  7. Looks great! Living in a warmer climate...I think I have 2 hats and they are for when I go up to the mountains! But this is a very useful idea for all sorts of uses! Have a great day!!

  8. I love the wire racks and the idea of not stacking boxes right on top of each other. You are so right about that being a pain to pull out, but mostly to put back in!
