Get The Most From Your Fabric When Using Accuquilt Go...

Hi everyone. Last week I shared a post with the Accuquilt Go cutter, their new dies and an English paper piecing project...click HERE if you missed it. Today, I don't have a tutorial for a specific project, but more of a helpful tip to get the most out of all your fabric when using any of the Accuquilt Go Dies and cutters.

If you sew or quit, you know fabric is expensive and we don't want to waste a single square inch of it. This post will not only show you how to get the most out of your fabric, but you can potentially be cutting shapes and patterns for several different quilts at the same time.

Money saving, fast and efficient…our sewing time is precious, so let's not waste it!!

In this post, I will be using the 8 inch clamshell die, the 4 inch clamshell die and the hexagon die for paper piecing.

I will be using fabric that is 10 inches by 10 inches square and 4 layers thick.

You can get all this cut in a matter of minutes!

Come on in and see how easy…

Gather up all the fabric you are going to use for a particular die. I am using the 8 inch Clamshell Die.

The size of my die itself is 10 inches by 10 inches.

You will adjust your fabric size according to the die you are using. This is just a sample of how you can use the leftover fabric from the die's edges.

I folded my fabric in half, then in half again and cut it at 10 inches. Easy!!

Now here is the 8 inch clamshell...

Empty space on the bottom, on either side.

and the top corners, but not for me!!

Place the 10 inch square fabric layer over the die.

Place cutting mat on top.

The cutting mat is what the blades press up against when it's going through the rollers to actually cut the fabric.

Start on either side of the Accuquilt Go unit.

Turn the handle to roll the die through.

Once it's through, you're done.

Remove the clamshell fabric.

You are left with the scraps, but this is fabric "gold".

Here on the bottom...

and the top.

You can use any shape that fits in the leftover areas, but I have the 4 inch clamshell that will work perfectly!

I just cut the fabric apart to make it easy.

Same technique as before.

Cover die with fabric…

Add cutting mat.

Send it through the rollers.

Done! Still going to use those scraps at the top of this picture.

and the scraps from the top of the original 8 inch large clamshell.

Just try to cover as much of the hexagon shapes as you have fabric for.

I unfolded the scraps again to see what I have left to use.

and there was still more!!

So this is what you can get from a 10 inch by 10 inch square of fabric, 4 layers thick!!

4 large (8 inch) clamshells…

8 small (4 inch) clamshells…

40 hexagons for paper piecing or any hexagon project!

and some scraps. Don't throw those out though. They are great for appliqué.

But if I know my friend Tina from Seaside Stitches, this selvage scrap will be a quilt in no time!

Look at her selvage quilt…just beautiful!!! Click HERE to see her post.

So ladies, make sure you utilize your Accuquilt Go die to it's fullest extent and you'll be sewing "several" different quilts in no time.

  3. Great post on waste and the Accuquilt GO. I bought a GO about 8 months ago and was concerned at first about waste but your idea is great. I have used mine mainly for strips so far and really no waste at all there if you get the folds in the right place just as you have done.
