Thoughts on Thursday...

Halloween is coming up on Monday. I was just thinking about all the costumes I made the girls had over the years when they were little...tube of tooth paste, M&M's, flower and a bee, Dorothy and the witch. They were so darn cute! (can you tell I miss them lol)

One Halloween, Kelsie was a flower and Courtney was a bumble bee...they were 2 and 3 years old. Kelsie's flower costume was a green coat that I added big wired flower petals to the hood...all around her face. Then she stepped into a large plant pot that was attached to the coat. (you know those brown light weight pots that disintegrate in the ground) Looked adorable, but she couldn't take big strides with her walk. Lots of tears. Funniest memory was Courtney, the life size bumble bee, holding the crying flower's hand trying to get to the next house. The bee was bent over, looking at the flower and patting her on the hand, trying to convince her to go on. Courtney knew there was candy at that next house and would do anything to get it!!

What's your fondest Halloween memory?

Happy Thursday,
~Karen~

  1. I made Pete a shark costume when he was 4. He didn't want to go trick-or-treating, so I have a picture of him on the porch, barefoot in his costume, with the bowl of candy. The green and purple dragon costume I made the year before was the cutest. I made adorable princess and witch costumes for Julia. I don't miss working with that sparkly tulle!

  2. My grandkids are 14 and 16. When they were Trick or Treaters my daughter always made their costumes, from scratch, no patterns, sewn by hand since she had no machine.

This is so special to me because she used to hate to go to fabric/craft stores with me when she was young and claims she is NOT crafty.

  3. It is a rare thing to see a homemade customs on children around my home town. They are all dress in that flimsy stuff with plastic masks of the latest super hero character. What I wouldn't give for a bumble bee lead flower pot - LOL.

  4. I was just thinking about Halloween costumes on the past the other day. My brother was born when I was 14 so I made all of his costumes, he NEVER had store bought. Before Halloween we would goto the store and pick out that years pattern, that poor kid got drug to so many fabric stores, but on those occassions he was happy. We would pour over the books to pick the perfect one.

He was a clown, a ninja, a hobo, ok the hobo was kinda easy, I sewed patches on old torn clothes, lol.
The 2 that stick out in my mind are the dinsaur, I was sewing gold satin toenails on 10 minutes before he was out the door.
Then there was the year he and his friend both teenagers at this point, had gone to see To Wong Fu that summer. They thought they would shock us and their request was that we make them women for Halloween. We made them pink and purple mermaid style dresses, they had hats with feathers and tule, wigs, matching high heels, fake nails and make up. It was histerical. A convertible full of guys tried to pick them up while walking down the road, haha. Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a size 13 purple pump?? I do, it's impossible, I got white and painted it, with t shirt paint.
I recently found the picture and texted it to his girlfriend, now Mom and I are waiting for him to marry and have kids so we can make more costumes.

  5. The greatest costume I made was when my baby (now 22) was around 6 or 7 I made her a tree costume. the body was the trunk and had roots at sticking out around her feet and the arm were branches. and had branches going up around her face with leaves all over. there was even a large knot whole in the middle of the trunk. but she wouldnt let me put an owl in there. :( She hated the thing but boy she looked cute.

  6. Weren't those fun times? This year two of our grandchildren are going as a flower and a watering can, but I like the idea of a bee better.

  7. I made several costumes, in fact I rarely bought them. The ones that stick out in my mind are the ET costume that had a million pieces, turned out to be too big and when alter for length made him waddle just like ET! (for my oldest-threw that pattern out!) My youngest had a couple of clever ones: he wished to be a spike-tailed dinosaur, after much thought I took big toilet paper boxes cut out the shape and spray painted them green, I ended up duct taping them to him on halloween! He was livid because everyone thought he was a dragon and didn't stay out long as it was very hard to walk in! Then he wanted to be a Ninja turtle-green sweats for the body, a brown paper bag cut in an oval with darts that made it stick up for the shell and orange crepe paper for mask, elbow and knee ties! He trick or treated at some older folks homes and they asked him what he was he said "Raphael", they said "the Painter?" his reply "No, teenage mutant nina turtle!" Such great memories!

  8. well, i didn't really start liking Halloween until my kids were grown and I had grandkids. There was a lot less stress about costumes and such...

My favorite is when I did a party for grandkids and their parents. I did fun foods, and games for both adults and kids...they all told me it was really fun. (the best reward!)

  9. I made all my boys costumes when they were young...it was always so much fun...all the planning and sewing...I think one of my favorites was a clown costume I made for my youngest out of red and white polka dot flannel when he was about 2 and then I later converted it into his favorite pair of PJ's...also the devil cape that turned into a Superman cape for years!!

  10. Probably the year I dressed my then 9-yr old as a clown. He was sooo cute, but has never forgiven me for that one!!! He had his heart set on being a super hero of some kind, but I just couldn't get the costume together and already had the clown costume. He does laugh about it now though :)

  11. Aren't those fun memories?! I need to get back to scrapping those pictures because they are so fun to flip through! I didn't start sewing until we had our first child. One of the first things I made was a pumpkin costume for our 2 yr old son. It was so big he was lost in it and the stem on top of his head kept flopping in his face. Loved making costumes for the kids every year!

  12. Great blog! Love the thoughts. My favorite homemade costumes were the Care Bears I made my two boys, and then made heads for Dad and I as well. The kids looked adorable, and when they were all grown up, they tried the heads on again, including Dad's head, and they looked even more adorable. And then there was the year I made them astronaut costumes because I found a great price on ironing board fabric. I don't think they LOVED the astronaut costumes (not exactly superheroes in the 1980's) but I thought they were ROCK STARS! I loved making those costumes, and I miss those little boys. Thanks for jogging my memory. I may go back and blog about them if I can find the pictures. ~CJ

  14. I always made my boys' costumes. They were everything from a roll of Lifesavers to Scooby Doo to Colonel Sanders.

My "bee" story involes my middle son when he was three. He wanted to be a bumble bee and his brother was a pirate. The pirate had a sword and an eye patch. There was a little jealousy until the bee figured out how cute people thought he was when he backed up to them with his stinger and said, "Bzzzz....I sting you!"

One year I dressed my oldest as an M&M and I took a trashbag and put all the lettering of a package on it. I was the package and he the M&M.

Another year I was pregnant and I had a green jumper that I wore a lot. I pinned tinsel and stuffed ornaments to it and went as a Christmas Tree. My kids loved it that I dressed with them.

  16. When my daughter (24 now) was 1. We dressed her up in a yellow sweat suit. I made bunny ears and painted a bunny nose on her. We took her house to house around our neighborhood and met so many people we'd never met before. It was afternoon and I remember one lady who was in the back room of the house. Her husband took us back there and showed her the cute baby bunny. She was dying of cancer and had all their old pictures out around her and writing names on the pictures for her kids. I still remember that. She was so happy we'd come by.

  17. The year my daughter was 3 she was the princess and her baby brother was a frog. We pulled him in the wagon with a sign on it that said, "Kisses $1! Kiss at your own risk, no refunds."

  18. A witch and her little brother, a cow, came to our door one Halloween. We complimented their costumes and the girl said, "He can do something a real cow can do! Show them." The little boy did so - "See- he can stick his tongue in his nose just like a real cow!" She was so proud.

  19. My favorite memory of all the costumes I made for my girls when they were little probably is not the one "I" made, but the one my mother made for me that I wore in the early sixties. My brother wore it, the nurse that worked for my father clinic (family practice) three children wore it and then my two girls wore it. I will post a picture on my blog with my first daughter wearing it. I am saving it for my two daughters children.
