Thoughts on Thursday...

Yesterday was move in day at the girls university...4 days late due to the hurricane. They just restored power there.

3 car loads full of girlie stuff, 2 dorms with 2 full flights of stairs in each and 1 hubby who had his first day back at school, so he couldn't come until later in the evening.

My legs hurt, my back hurts, my arms hurt, but most of all...

my heart hurts...I miss them already.

I hate an empty nest :(

Hug your kids today!

Have a great Thursday,
~Karen~

ps...we need to start that empty nest club, Natalie!!

  1. We are 1 week into our empty nest. This is SO hard! Always knew this was coming, but we miss them like crazy. However, we've made it through thus far and the daily texts and phone calls help tremendously. Our daughter is absolutely over the moon and enjoying this college adventure and that helps a lot too. I'm sending care packages and mail weekly to her and out son who is in the Marines. Glad to hear that y'all are all safe and I hope the girls have a great year. As for us empty nesters, there is hope! We ranch and I am enjoying spending more time with DH. Kind of fun to rediscover how much we still enjoy each other! Will be thinking of you.

  2. Oh dreading this moment. It's not such a MASSIVE thing in Australia where students live in at the Universities, so i'm hoping, even if we live in the country, if we have a city apartment, our children will still come home on the weekends. That's the issue with having 4 in less than 5 years, they'll all disappear in a short space of time, if we let them. We have 3 universities in our small city here (capital city of Australia but still well under half a million people) so hopefully they'll study locally. Love Posie

  4. I'm not ready to be apart of that club yet. I plan to enjoy every minute of these last 2 years. I was thinking about Julia's last first day of school. The first of the lasts!

  6. Mine move out and then come back! I still have one living with me but that is only for a little while longer as he finished University in the Spring, but it will be so lonely knocking around this house alone when he goes! I think that's when I'll really miss having a dog!

  7. Half way there. LOL. I have one that just started Sophomore year at a University 1,938 (or so) miles from home. She and I did a cross country road trip to return her (and her STUFF) to school. Bittersweet. The second one has started his senior year of high school...so we are well on our way to fully empty nest. Hope I/we take it as well as others have! HUGS!!

  11. Can I join your empty nest club? I agree with you about not enjoying this empty nest business. I have two married, one unmarried but living far, far away across the ocean, and my baby just started college. Glad the girls got moved in but sad that your body and heart hurt.

Damn!Is this really what we wanted? I want them home and in their beds!

  13. Bless your hearts. I remember when my daughter went to college in 1988 - our oldest adn only daughter. I was devastated but since she was only an hour away, I was able to hold it together pretty well, Well, then when our youngest son went to school 6 hours away, I sniffled and snuffled all the way out there and really cried coming home. My baby. Well, I made it through it, but to this day so many years later, I still miss having my house full of my 5 children and all their friends.
You are lucky to have texting available - we only had long distance expensive calls. New adventures for the kids and for the parents. We make it through it.
Hugs to you all. My eyes filled with tears reading some of the notes.

  14. I guess I'll be part of that club also.I know how you feel. I took my only daughter to school on Friday. This is her first year. The school lost power on Saturday evening and it wasn't restored until Sunday evening. Things didn't start out too well but she's doing alright now.
I'm lucky she isn't too far away so she will be home on Friday for the holiday weekend.

  15. I cried all the way down the motorway and kept wandering in and out of his bedroom for a week. That was 3 years ago. He is doing a 4 year course, he goes back for the 4th year next week and I can't wait, he keeps eating me out of house and home!

Still not completely an empty nester yet, as DD & SIL are living with us.

  18. My daughter moved to Seattle - a huge dream of hers - just before she turned 18. I missed her so much I wandered from room to room every single day getting all misty or just downright blubbering. Then after a year she moved back. She just recently bought her first house (at 24) and the best part? It's a whole 15 blocks from my house. That's way better than 1400 miles! Chin up - it gets better.

  19. Ooh, I don't think I am ready to do that yet! Thankfully I still have a few years left....but they go by soooo quickly! Glad the girls are in safe and sound, sending you hugs.

  20. We moved our youngest to college on July 11th. He's only an hour away, but between work and school, he won't get to home very often. I've done a little better than I expected by remembering that this is a great opportunity for him. His program is only a year, so that shouldn't be too bad. :)

  21. You make it sound so sad. I keep thinking it would be awesome to have fully grown kids off at college or out of school but you remind me that it may not be so easy. I did just start my last little girl in Kindergarten and I was very sad. (only until her teacher called saying she was throwing food at lunch) So thank you for you lovely reminder that kids grow too fast and to enjoy them now.

  22. It gets better. Trust me. I have two girls who have flown the next, and I didn't think I could live through it. You have talents that will sprout and be used more than you know. I love your blog. I look at it multiple times per week. You will be okay.

  23. Yes, you SHOULD start an empty nest club! That's what I did and the 8 of us just celebrated our 9th year of meeting monthly together. It was the best thing I have ever done. DO IT! I'll give you some hints if you are interested.

  25. I took my oldest son back last week. It's his third year. Next year, my baby will be going to college, too. It will be strange then. It gets easier each year. You get used to it sooner each year.

  26. Oh Karen I'm not looking forward to that either! Si I feel your pain! :( We only have the one daughter to. I'd have to stay busy with projects to keep my mind occupied. Good luck and hang in there!!!
