  1. I hate word verification and don't have it on my blog. Luckily, I don't get any spam and have had my blog set up this way for nearly the full time now.....nearly two years. (I hope I'm not jinxing myself by saying this! LOL) The reason I hate word verification is that sometimes they have the letters so squished together that you can't understand them and you get it wrong and then have to type it again. I follow (or TRY to follow) SO many blogs since I, like you, have hundreds of followers of my blog...so I don't have a lot of time to post comments and the word verification (especially if the letters are squished and I get them wrong) slows me down too much!

  2. I don't like blog verification, but I use it. I have had some really nasty comments left on my blog, so I understand the need for it.

Thanks for setting up blog buddy... I haven't actually tried anything yet, but when I have time, I will!

  3. Hi.
I dont have word verification on my blog right now but I am going to set it up soon.
I dont get spam on my email and I dont mind using the word verification on others' blogs.

  4. I do not care for word verification and I don't have it on my blog. So far, I've only received two spam messages and Blogger caught them both. They were never published.

  5. I don't have it in my blog. Usually don't mind doing it on other pages but man, the words that you have to type are getting longer and longer. I don't usually get spam, but yesterday I got the first one , and it was picked up by bloggers spam protection thingy and was not put in the comments section. You can check this under Design/comments. There you can read all of your past comments and there is a tab for spam.

I like your comment box. How did you do it this way, or is that for a future blog-buddy?

  6. I dont have word verification on my blog and I do get a fair bit of spam on specific posts (10-15 a week ) but it doesnt get published because it gets caught by the spam filter. I usually delete it all once a week. It's no biggie.

I'd rather not have to do word verification when posting a comment but it doesnt deter me from posting comments.

  7. Yes, I have word verification.
I did not have it originally and was getting a trickle of spam so could deal with it. Then one day I got 70 spam emails. They didn't get published as I censor first but this made me realise I needed to change. Since changing - no spam at all!
I don't mind doing it on other blogs as I understand why it is done now.

  8. I haven't started my blog yet, but I am confused about something and can't figure it out. When I'm using Moz. Firefox I can post in most blogs, but for some types of "Post a Comment" I have to copy and paste the link into Internet Explorer to do it.

Over the weekend I'm planning on reading thru your posts on Blogging Buddy (it's a fab idea and so helpful)I'm interested to learn about the different types of Post a Comment forms, maybe it has something to do with the issue.

  9. I have word verification. I decided to check and left a stupid message on my own blog because there is no word verification when you comment on your own blog - guess I'm stupid. Wish I knew how to get rid of my stupid message. Any tips. So far, no spam. W.V. is annoying but I can live with it.

  10. I do not have word verification for my blog, but it is a Wordpress blog which has a great built-in spam filter.

  11. I have word verification on my blog... never had a comment saying they hate it and I don't mind doing it on other blogs.... unless they are Typepad ones cos they are always too slanty and too long...and skew if

  12. I don't have word verification; have never received spam comments or email from my blog; dislike word verification and it deters me from leaving comments because it makes the effort more cumbersome and seems like the blogger isn't really welcoming the interaction.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Just discovered how to delete a comment. It's a huge learning curve happening here. Thanks for this opportunity to learn from you.

  14. I have always used the word verification on my blog, but still got quite a bit of spam. So now I have it set, so I have to aprove the comments. I don't get any spam anymore.
I don't mind the word verification. I think it is a good security feature. When I read comments someone left on a blog post, I don't want to read through a bunch of spam, or unrelated items.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I do have word verification, but I hate having to have it on my blog, and I hate having to do it to leave a comment on other blogs. However, I understand the need for it, and when I leave it off my blog, I do get spammed.

When I see spam that has been left in other blogs' comment sections, and it has been there for a long time, it makes me wonder about the blog author--do they not read their comments? :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Interesting. I have verification and don't mind using it. I think in two years only one or two spam-like comments.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I use word verification... and since I started that I don't get any spam..
I actually kind of like reading my word verification when I leave a comment. Sometimes they are funny...and appropriate...

    ReplyDelete
  18. I use it and have never received spam. I don't mind having to do word verification to leave comments. No big deal to me.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I do have word verification and don't really mind using it on other blogs. I added verification when I started getting spam.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I do have word verification and I don't mind using them. I have it from the start of having my own blog.

    ReplyDelete
  21. First, I love Blog Buddy. Thank you!!
I have word verification, if I do not use it, I get spam. Do I like to use it no, am I happy if I leave a comment and they do not use it, yes. I read somewhere if you set you blog to allow only comments on the last two weeks or so, you do not need word verification and will not get spam.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I dont' have word verification feature because I hate it, I find it so annoying on other blogs. I very, very seldom get any spam (I'm talking maybe two comments a year that are spam) but since I moderate comments I simply delete the spam ones.

    ReplyDelete
  23. When I had a blog I did not have word verification and I did not receive spam. I hate word verification.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I use WordPress, so much of what you're describing doesn't apply to me. However, I do NOT have word verification and my spam all goes to my spam filter. I get about one spam comment a day (although my readership is much lower, of course). Sometimes I find the word verification entertaining, but mostly it's just annoying. I especially dislike it when my computer is running slow and I have to wait for another page to load before I can move on to another blog.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I dropped word verification because I heard other bloggers hated it. I have not experienced any big jump in spam. I do continue to review comments BEFORE they are posted.

And, yes, I do think word verification is a pain.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I did use it and got some spam with it but only in the filtered area, not in my blog. I just quit using it recently and have had no trouble. I check my spam filter periodically.
I totally hate how long the words are getting but I do use it on other blog sites.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I use word verification, and frankly I'm so used to it when leaving comments on blogs that I'm surprised when a blog doesn't require it. I also won't allow anonymous comments because I had someone leave a hateful comment once as anonymous. I just don't need to deal with that sort of thing.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I've had word verification ever since I started my blog. Even with the verification, I did start getting spam, so I added authorization and have not had any trouble since then. Does that mean that someone is actually sending out spam and writing in the word for verification? Don't they have a life?? It does not bother me nor stop me from commenting on other blogs. I think it is good protection for your blog.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I find when I leave a comment, that often the word verification pops up after, so I'm not expecting it and sometimes press enter and then get a message that my entry didn't match. I also find sometimes the verification word is difficult to read. Bottom line - I think it's a pain. Therefore, I've not used it on my comment section. I haven't had any spam whatsoever. I do filter all comments by setting up owner approval - all comments are visible through my dashboard, and I can choose to publish or reject as I see fit - also all comments go to my email and I can respond easily there. Thanks for doing this blog buddy - have found some great tips already! Blessings, Peg

  30. I started my blog without word verification, but suddenly someone had generated an advertisement in over 100 posts. It was tedious to go through and delete those. Afterward, I changed to comment moderation on any posts over two weeks and added word verification.

I don't mind word verification on others' blogs because I know they probably had similar problems.

Your tips have been interesting and helpful. Thank you.

  31. Using word verification always.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I use word verification. I don't particularly like it, or like to use it, but I don't like what is more likely to happen with spam without it....

  33. I do not have word verification on my blog. I don't have very many commenters. I haven't received any spam yet!

But, if I ever get to where there are a lot of commenters or if I get spam, I will most likely add word verification.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I do not have it at the moment and have not had a real problem with SPAM yet. I would prefer not to have it on a blog I follow, but can understand the reason for it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I have word verification because I did get spam that was u-g-l-y. Ish...For a while I even added the next line of defense and used the *will post after blog owner approval* for a time. I do use that last line of defense for posts older than 14 days. I have had spam on old posts.

So, do I like it? No, I don't, but I appreciate why people have it on their blogs after seeing the ugly stuff come my way.

    ReplyDelete
  36. 1) I don't use word verification. SO few people leave comments that I want to make it as easy as possible!
    2) I haven't gotten any spam.
    3) The word verification doesn't bother me, although sometimes the words can be tricky to read.

    ReplyDelete
  37. as a blogger yes! I used to get a lot of junk spam comments and I just didn't want my readers to be exposed to it or to accidentally go clicking on those links. While it may be annoying to do word verification (especially when you have to leave 2-3 comments for giveaways!) I understand why it's there.

One other thing that I do is that I set comment moderation to "on" for posts that are older than 7 days. It seems like spammers would spam older posts

    ReplyDelete
  38. I have word verification on my blog. I don't mind using it on other blogs. Spam can be annoying so I feel verification is minor.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I got rid of word verification some time ago and do not have spam problems. Blogger has a spam catcher now and it seems to be working very well for me.
I'd rather not leave word verification:)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I have it on my blog, I dont' mind it much on other peoples blogs. I wish we didnt' have to have it at all..but one nasty spammer was all it took to convince me. I love your blog. Its one I read as soon possible along with Pioneer woman and Patchwork times...:-D

    ReplyDelete
  41. I used word verification and comment moderation from the start. I wonder if just having comment moderation would be ok for people not to get the annoying word verification stuff nor spam garbage in my blog (I would delete it previously so it doesn´t get published...though this could become a real pain in my......!!!)
I would prefer no to go through word verification in other people´s blogs but I understand why they use it.
Great idea having a blog buddy!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I do not have it on my blog and although I think it is annoying, I still leave comments on blogs that do have it. I don't think I have excessive spam! Love your helpful blogger posts!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I do have word verification on my blog. I don't really mind using it on a blog when I leave a comment. I am not sure how it helps cut down on spam though. If I were a spammer i would just fill in the letters. When I first started the blog I did the comment moderation, what a pain after awhile that was. So now I just have the word verification. I know at least one blog that had a big problem and had to use comment variation for a while. Who knows for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I had to go look. I did have it set so I just removed it because it is an inconvenience. If I encounter any problems I'll change it back. It's a shame you can't set it to only have verification for "anonymous" comments.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hi, I have word verification on my blog after I was hit by spam msg. It wasn't able to stop the spam so I resorted to moderation. Spammers use sophisticated programs to bypass the word verification. Once I spent hours deleting spam msg left on almost all my blog posts. Definitely don't want to go thru' all that again. So I have word verification AND moderation. It's a miracle I get any comments.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I prefer not to use it on my blog and prefer not to have to do it when I post. However, I have on occasion turned it on on my blog when spam starts up. I find that after a few days or weeks I can safely turn it off again.

    ReplyDelete
  47. After a long time with no trouble with comments (very few comments at all, actually) I began to get lots of posts in an Asian language. When translated, they were basically, well, porn sites. So I have had word verification on my blog and comment moderation ever since and that has been working out well for me. I don't like it, but it has been a necessity.

  48. I have the word verification switched on for my blog. I would of course prefer not to have to type the word, but I completely understand why it's necessary so it doesn't bother me. Just one of those things you have to do.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I have word verification on mine and even with it I've had a few weird comments..I hate to think what might appear if it wasn't there.

    ReplyDelete
  50. No, I don't have word verification on by blog, but my blog isn't exactly active :-/ When I was blogging regularly, my spam folder wasn't any heavier than normal. I don't mind doing them.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yes, I have word verification and have never had a spam comment. And yes, it is a little time consuming to do the word verification when reading others' blogs but if it's needed to avoid bloggers being spammed. So be it.
What does annoy me is when some blog pages take 'forever' to load...not sure why some take so long but I stopped following a few because it was just too time consuming to see what they had to say.

  52. PS Great discussion here in everyone's comments. Blog Buddy is a wonderful idea! Thanks for coming up with it :-)

  53. 1. I do not have the word verification on my blog.
    2. No problem with spam so far.
    3. I definitely would rather not have the word verification on other blogs, but won't quit reading them because they use it.

  54. I have word verification. I don't mind having to do it. I think some of the words that they come up with are funny.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I don't have it enabled on my blog and NEVER get spam...I prefer not to have to type in the word, but it isn't a deal breaker for me :)

  56. 1. No.

    No
I hate having to do it. Really hate it.

I have on verification on my blogs, and depending on which blog, I moderate after a couple of days. That usually takes care of spammers, if I get any.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I don't have word verification on my blog. I have only had a little spam, not enough to worry about. I don't mind doing it on other's blogs except....it always makes me enter it twice. If I haven't logged in, I have to log in twice also...it's sometimes a hassle but not so much that it stops me from commenting.

    ReplyDelete
  59. 1. No (but I do approve comments first)

    2. No (once in a while I get a mean comment but I've only had a spam issue once or twice and I've been blogging a Looooog time)

    3. Yes. Having word verification- especially the kind the pops up after you click post comment and makes you scroll to the bottom- deters me from commenting as it is so frustrating.

    ReplyDelete
  60. 1. No, I do not have the word verification
    2. No I do not receive any spam email
    3. I personally do not like the word verification feature when commenting.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Howdy-doo! I do not have word verification on my blog, and I haven't had any spam... yet. I hope that I don't get any either, based on some of the comments above... yuck. But I do moderate all of my comments before they appear, so even if I did get spam or nasty messages, I'll see and destroy them before any of my follwers have to be subjected to them.
When commenting ob blogs, I *prefer* not to have to do the word verification, but it's so rare that it's someone *doesn't* have it set up that way, that I'm pretty well used to it, and I completely understand why some folks feel it's necessary. Hope that's helpful...

  64. I have word verification because I was getting some strange comments. Even with WV I still get random spam comments every couple months or so.

I don't mind the standard blogger WV where the captcha (sp) is at the bottom of the comments. I do not like the WV where you have to wait for the captcha to open up.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I don't have my own blog but do leave comments on others frequently. I do not like word verification Oftentimes it doesn't come up until I say "post", then tells me I can't and have to start the process all over. I usually just skip it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I have word verification because it's pretty standard on blogs and I like to utilize security features. so far nothing random, but then I don't have many people looking at my blog, either! I don't mind the word verification box that I have, but others, such as typepad, are irritating because there are letters, numbers, and spaces to work with and the letters/numbers are usually "cut out" in places, making it more difficult to ascertain what exactly the character is. I think "oh fransson" and "sweet limes" both have that feature.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I have word verification on my blog and do not mind the extra step when I leave comments on other blogs. I'd rather take the extra step as a security measure than have tons of spam, because let's face it once you get spam it is hard to block it. Hope this helps you!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I do have word verification, and although I don't like it, nor do I like entering it on other blogs I see it as a necessity. Unfortunately it doesn't stop mean spirited comments.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I don't have word verification or moderation, and just two spammers have got through Akismet on Wordpress in over two years.

As I use Wordpress and don't 'follow' blogs elsewhere I really don't like the combination of word verification and moderation .... either one or both, please!

  73. no I don't have word verification, never have. I do use askimet which filters out spam - very rarely does a spam message come through, but if you are new to leaving me a message I have to approve it first before it appears in my comment section so I can trash it then if I need to.

  74. I have word verification. I don't mind it on other blogs and actually it's sometimes fun to see what the words are and make up definitions for them (once an English major always an English major...)

  75. I do not do word verification. I just approve every comment before they post. I don't get a lot of spam at all. It is very rare that I get something that is spam. And yes, I HATE when I leave a comment and there is word verification. There have been SO many times I close out and then realize that the little box popped up and everything I typed is now gone. ugh!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I turned off the word verification on my blog I just moderate all comments before they get posted. Word verification is a pain, but I understand why it's useful and it's never prevented me from posting a comment when I wanted to.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I don't have word verification but I do moderate my comments unless I'll be away for a while (at which time I enable word verification). I don't get a lot of spam. It's actually been quite a while. As far as commenting, I don't mind word verification as I understand the need for some type of moderation.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I don't have word verification. At first it didn't bother me, but as I get more and more followers and am leaving more comments, it does take more of my time.

You can always turn on comment moderation, which means you have to approve comments before they are actually posted. So far I haven't had spam and haven't felt it necessary to do this.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I have word verification. I used to get spam comments but since Blogger added a spam filter it seems to have gone away. I would love to eliminate the verification but I don't mind doing them when reading blogs.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I use word verification and even added moderation after I got a lot of spam. It's pretty much stopped now. Don't like typing the letters, but understand why I need to.

  81. 1) I don't have word verification; but I do have a spam blocker widget that works very well. Also, when someone posts a comment for the first time, it has to be approved. After that, the blog remembers that person and all subsequent posts are automatically approved.
    2) The spam blocker widget ("Akismet") has blocked 1278 spam messages in the last year. They don't get forwarded to my email, they're quarantined on the blog until I delete them.
    3) I don't really care for the word verification, but I understand the need for it and will not knock someone for using it.

I'm not sure if you were looking only for answers from Blogger blogs - I use WordPress.

    ReplyDelete
  82. 1. no - i use moderation.
    2. no thankfully
    3. yes it can add up quickly if your on a blog hop etc.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I just turned off word verification because I was getting sick of typing the words into other people's blogs. I only have a few followers, and probably fewer readers that it doesn't really matter.

Please bloggers, if you are participating in something like the Fall into Fall Bloghop, turn off your moderation or word verification or whatever you have until the end of the hop! I got so tired of typing all that junk in!

I check blogs from my phone often throughout the day, and have an even longer load time for the word verification. It definetley cuts down on the amount of comments I leave!

    ReplyDelete
  84. I just recently turned the word verification off. If I were to get spam, I would definitely turn it back on. I'm not crazy about that extra step when I'm leaving comments but it doesn't stop me from commenting.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I do have word verification enabled. I also have comment moderation enabled. I am new and don't get that many comments, but I haven't had any spam. I don't mind the word verification on others.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I don't have a blog, so no answer for the first two. I really hated the word verification on the comments, but got used to it. There have been a few times when the word verification popped up after hitting post comment and it took so long, I thought I had left a comment, but hadn't. Does that make sense?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Karen, I have word verification set up in my blog and I don't mind having to do word verification when I leave a message in somebody's blog. I think it is necessary and it is not such a big deal having to enter it when leaving comments.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I have word verification, but that didn't stop these wise guys leaving comments with links to their porn sites. I finally had to have my comments not show until I looked at them. What a world we live in.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Yes I have the word verification and for a while I was getting some chinese or asian responses that when translated were really nasty. But I blocked them now and am not getting those anymore but keep the verification just in case. I don't mind doing in on other blogs either. It's just a fact of life and something you must do.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I do not use Word Verification, and I also don't get much spam. I do have all the comments sent to my email so that it's easier to respond to people and to eliminate spam. The word verification bugs me to be honest...I don't always know it's going to pop up and sometimes I miss it, then the comment isn't posted...oh well...

  91. Thanks so much for Blog Buddy! I just added the word verification but I had never had any spam before I did. I really dont like it and find at times when at other sites I cant tell what the letters are. I just redo until I get one I can figure out but not everyone will do that.
Thanks again for all the help with Blog Buddy.

I have enabled comment moderation for posts that are older than 10 days. This has caught a couple of spam posts.
I also don't allow anonymous posters.

I have been very lucky so far! I do get some spam emails, but they go into my junk folder so I don't have to deal with them, and I got them before I had my blog too. Somehow the spammers always find you! :)

  103. I don't have word verification on my blog or spam. It drives me nuts when ever I go to other blogs and they have it because sometimes it doesn't work for me and it take a long time so I just give up and don't leave a comment. But the blogs I love that have it, I just put up with it.
