Christmas Home Tour 2015...

Merry Christmas everyone! Thank you so much for stopping by. All the decorations are up and the hot chocolate is warming on the stove. I hope you can grab a cup too and stay for a while to enjoy the tour of our holiday home.

I just love Christmas and this time of year. Decorating for the holidays for my family and friends is my absolute favorite thing to do. Every room in the house has a tree or some little touch of Christmas. I have been collecting decorations for over 30 years and each year I add something new to that collection. However, as many of you know, I am a big shopper of "after Christmas" sales and thrift store finds are the best! You can really change the look of your home by using what you have in different ways year after year. I'm hoping some of my tips and tricks in this year's post will inspire you in your holiday home!

Welcome to our home for the holidays...

Book Page Flower Tutorial...

Hi everyone! A couple weeks ago I shared a tutorial on how to make a wreath made from book pages (I used an old, falling apart dictionary).  Click here for the instructions. I finally hung it up where I wanted it for the holidays on a chalkboard frame with a big Merry Christmas bow. ( I bought that ribbon at TJMaxx last year)

I also wanted to make a whole tree made with book page ornaments and handmade things to go with the wreath. Here's my attempt at a book page flower and I love them!!

How to Make a Book Page Wreath...

Hi everyone! I've been busy getting ready for the holidays. Christmas starts early for me, because I have a very big party in early December and the house is decorated from top to bottom. I have 12-13 decorated trees up...one in every room in the house. I've already started in the bedrooms upstairs, because the kids are gone and no one will see it and think I'm crazy!! Downs stairs has to stay decorated for autumn, because we also host Thanksgiving for both sides of the family.

There is one exception this year. Our big family tree is already up in the family room. Our daughter Kelsie moved to Florida 2 weeks ago. She was away for all the holidays last year for a Disney internship and I couldn't have another holiday without her here to celebrate. The weekend before they left, we had an ALL holiday celebration. All four kids had Halloween trick or treat bags and carved pumpkins, we had a big Thanksgiving dinner, we decorated the big family Christmas tree and opened stockings and presents. We also had Easter baskets! Each room in the house was decorated for each holiday including Valentine's Day! I think I have a few pictures that I can share later.

Right now, I wanted to share a wreath I made for one of the rooms.

Book Page Wreath...

I've always wanted to make a wreath from old book pages and was inspired by this post from the blog Knick of Time.

Here's my version.

I just love the texture and the color!

I even made a little bow from the pages.

Happy Halloween...and a Little Treat Too

Hi everyone! I found this little pumpkin pretzel treat idea on Pinterest and made them a couple weeks ago for the kids. My didn't turn out as great as some of the pictures on Pinterest, but they sure were yummy. That salty sweet combination can't be beat! I thought I would share them today in honor of Halloween.

Pumpkin Pretzels...

pumpkin pretzels

You will need...

  • small pretzels (traditional shape)
  • orange melting chocolate
  • green M&M's (you can use a skinny pretzel stick dipped in green chocolate if you had them)

pumpkin pretzels

Easy steps...

  • melt the chocolate in the microwave
  • dip pretzels
  • place on cookie sheet with waxed paper
  • stick on M&M before chocolate hardens
  • place in refrigerator until chocolate sets (only a few minutes)
Mine look a little rough, lol. The chocolate wasn't as smooth as I liked, but they were literally eaten seconds after they hardened so looks didn't matter much!!

pumpkin pretzels

Enjoy!!

Happy Halloween!

The Best Apple Crisp Recipe...Ever!!

Nothing says autumn more than a dish of warm apple crisp. I've been making apple crisp for years using different recipes (including my mom's) and have never found one that we all loved (sorry mom). This past week, I tried a recipe I found on Allrecipes and it is not only easy, it is perfection. My family loves a crunchy topping and a soft apple filling and this recipe delivers both. It just moved up to #1 at my house!

A Little Fall Decorating...

We live in Rhode Island and the weather on the whole east coast is, well, yucky!! Rain, rain and more rain and a little ol' hurricane coming up the coast for this weekend. The gloomy days really make it feel like fall and we need the rain, so I'm not complaining.

fall decor

fall decor

I decorated a while ago, but I'm just getting around to taking some pictures.

Thought I would share some with you for a few ideas...a little fall, a little Halloween and a little Thanksgiving all mixed together.

I've purchased most all of these decorations over the years at Walmart, TJ Maxx or Home Goods.

Just add styrofoam bats and pumpkins to mercury glass and it makes them look extra special.

fall decor

99 cent crow and $2.00 pumpkin looks pretty good under a glass dome!! lol

fall decor

My most recent purchase is the "Gobble 'til You Wobble" sign. I bought it at Michael's with a 50% coupon!

fall decor

I love that motto!!

fall decor

Even little corners get a little fall on...

fall decor

the mantel too...

fall decor

and a little at the front door. The pumpkin candle smell is the best!!

fall decor

The kitchen counter gets a splash of autumn too.

fall decor

Glitter pumpkins from Walmart and the crow too!!

fall decor

If you are not so much into the "orange" of the season, a calm neutral works too!!

I mixed fake candles with real ones on a round mirror for extra glow. Very pretty at night up against the mercury glass.

Thanks for stopping by! Happy start to autumn to everyone!!

Sew Darn Crafty Party...and a Great Big Thank You

Two posts in a row...I'm on a roll! I think yesterday's post was cathartic for me and gave me the kick in the pants I needed to get back to the "normal" things in life. I can't thank you all enough for your love and support, the comments and personal e-mails. They mean more to me than you'll ever know. There are so many people in the world dealing with so much, that maybe we can band together and provide some sort of moral support through this little thing we call the internet. I'm starting a weekly feature so we can all discuss, vent and share ideas for being a caregiver. I know that yesterday's post helped me, so maybe we can all spread the love each week. My mind is already ticking with a theme for it!

For now, let's get the Sew Darn Crafty Linky Parties up and running again. These next few months are going to be jammed packed with autumn ideas and fun things for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas, so let's start sharing!!!

Changes...But Life Goes On

I've wanted to start this post a million times, but one word stops me every time...LIFE. There was a time when I was posting every single day and loved doing it. Then it was like exercising...it was easier NOT to do it as time went on lol. Change is inevitable I guess. We just need to accept it and move on.

Another reason why I've hesitated writing this post is I don't want you to think it is a "woe is me" post. I have always been the glass is half FULL person, always look for the positive in something, keep moving forward and learn from the experience. I do, however, want to share personal things because life isn't always about sewing, crafting and pretty decorations. We need to see or read that someone is going through similar experiences, because it may help...even in the tiniest of ways.

I know people are going through things in life that are much more difficult than we are right now, but none the less, it's changed our family once again and sharing things with you may help us both. As many of you know from past blog posts, my father has lived with us for over 11 years. We've been through just about everything you can think of...literally everything (from the passing of my mom, floods, fire, to good times and bad times etc), but once again "life" has hit the fan. My dad is 91 years old and his health is getting the best of him. He can't walk much any more due to a fall, has a choking and aspiration problem, seeing, hearing and his dementia is off and on.

We've had to move the furniture on his side of the house, so it's easier for him to move from room to room, we changed how he eats, how he sleeps (hospital bed now), we took away his car keys, shut off his internet access and pulled the breaker switch on his stove. We are in charge of giving him his medications, he needs help with personal care, health care professional are in and out of the house on a daily basis while I'm at work...and the list goes go.

He was a career military officer and teacher, so you can imagine the fight for power when he is with it mentally, especially when it's his 2 "daughters" telling him what to do. I'm the youngest of 5 children, so even worse that I'm the baby. The emotions run the gamut...frustration, anger, aggravation, pity, sadness etc. One minute he's with it and you're angry with him because he refuses to put thickener in his drink, so he won't aspirate liquids into his lungs and the next minute you feel pity for him, because he's trying to use the T.V. remote on the refrigerator and wondering why the channels aren't changing on the ice maker.

Needless to say, the stress level at our house on some days is to the moon and back. My husband is my rock. His love and strength through this never waivers and I love him to death. My family...Courtney, Kelsie, Courtland and Nick keep me busy, laughing and happy inside and out...and they don't even know they're doing it!  My sister is my partner in crime. She is always there for me and for my dad no matter what. If she and I didn't laugh together, we would cry for sure. We laugh so hard sometimes at all the crazy things that can happen in one day, I really should wear a Poise pad. Lol

I really try to look for the positive in each day, just to keep my sanity and this saying says it all!!

For the past month, we've moved a house full of his stuff to the storage room, paper work beyond comprehension, visiting nurses, long term care preparation, doctors appointments, hospice etc. We've learned a lot and the learning never ends.

Here are some quick bullet points that I want to share with you as "food for thought". Just a quick read even if you are not taking care of an elderly parent, relative or friend...we will all be in this situation ourselves one day.

Food For Thought for yourself or a loved one...

  • Living Will and Advanced Directives...make your wishes known legally, especially DNR (Do Not Resuscitate (here's a link I found for a quick definition).
  • Power of Attorney for health and Power of Attorney for financial matters. In our family my sister and I have POA for his health and my brothers have POA for his finances. These are a must. You will not have any legal rights to call for information from doctors, hospital or banks to make any decisions on your loved ones behalf without it.
  • Write a will for your possessions.
  • speaking of possessions...I am slowly but surely cleaning out my life of "stuff". I WILL NOT let this happen to my kids. I don't want them packing up boxes and boxes of junk in my attic or basement. Usually when things happen to elderly parents, the children are dealing with the important medical issues at that time and shouldn't be dealing with a house full of things. I have officially sworn off buying things from thrift stores for myself (I still buy for everyone else though). lol
  • Read the fine print for everything. My dad purchased long term care insurance years and years ago on his own. A hundred thousand dollars later and it's taking an act of God to get it activated. Not to mention he has to pay out of pocket for home care for the first 60 days before the insurance starts to pay. READ THE FINE PRINT.
  • Make your funeral wishes known. Think about purchasing a plot or crematorium.  Put away money for funeral costs. When the time is closer, some funeral homes let you pay in advance or pre-pay the total.
  • My parents sold their home and moved in with us, so that was not an issue, but you have to think about the elderly who still own their homes and what happens to that home if they go into a nursing home. Consult with a lawyer for further info, because every state is different and every situation is different whether that home is an asset to pay for nursing home care.

I know there is never an easy time to talk about or do these things, but I at least think about it and have it on your radar.

To end on a funny note...going through all this has certainly been an adventure much like a roller coaster, but mine is double the FUN having menopause along for the ride. Lol

Here are a few funnies to make you laugh...

Thanks for listening,
~Karen~

Workbench Sewing Table...

Hi everyone. Long time, no see. I have been on a little summer hiatus. Nothing in particular prompted this time off, just lots of little things happening all at once. My idea well had run dry, cleaning and purging our home of "things", working on Courtney and Courtland's new home, my 91 year old dad (who lives with us) has signs of dementia, poor health and needs more attention...just all the things we all have in our lives.

I have been sewing a lot though, using up my stash and making things to hopefully sell in my Etsy shop. It's nice to be back at my machine...blogging just took a back seat.

During one of my cleaning out sessions in the basement, I noticed my dad's old workbench system that I was using for Christmas storage. He hasn't used it in years due to his health. I thought to myself..."Why is this great set down here in the basement. I need to bring this up to my sewing room!!"

Tah Dah!!!

A double sewing machine, ironing station with storage.

I keep light colored thread in one machine and dark in the other, so it's always set up for those last minute clothing fixes, sewing projects or a day quilting with a friend...right Tina?

I know this system isn't for everyone, but pop in for some ideas to incorporate in your sewing room.

Easy Blueberry Cobbler Recipe...

July and August is blueberry season here in the northeast. They are plentiful and usually on sale in the stores or it's fun to spend some time on a farm picking your own. For me, on sale in the store was easier this weekend! It was hard choosing a recipe though...pie, muffins, cake or cobbler? We had lots of people in and out this weekend, so a very large pan of cobbler was the way to go!! I searched for a recipe on line and found a winner.
