Painting Old Light Fixtures…Before and After

Welcome to another edition of Tool Time Tuesday! Do you have old light fixtures that are still ok in their style or shape, but not so much their color? Well, that is definitely my story….not to mention I don't want to spend money on new ones or spend the time changing them out.

My quick fix…paint!!

This is the old color. It is a bronzy copper color.

Come in to see the small change that made a big impact for me!

Here's the before and after.

I painted them with a small brush on a ladder. I could have spray painted them faster, but I did NOT want to take down each fixture.

Each coat took about 10 minutes to do.

I painted little parts, like this screw cap on the tip of a screw driver. Helps to hold it while painting and drying.

This is a picture when I first started painting. They needed 2 coats.

I love them and it didn't cost a thing, because I already had the paint.

I didn't prime them, because one…that's an extra step and two…light fixtures don't get any contact so I knew that the paint wouldn't be chipping off.

Hope you can use this idea in your home. It's easy, fast and practically free!!

Thanks for stopping by,

Hey, Karen have you ever painted metal cabinet knobs. I have 48 knobs in my kitchen that I would like to paint...what would you do? They are gold :o(( and the actual cupboards are antique white. To replace the knobs with the ones I would like would cost over $200!! Help!!

    1. Check out Amazon for knobs. I just bought them for a kitchen and spent about a quarter of what I would have at the big box store got hinges too! In black!

    2. Hi Paulette, Rust-Oleum makes a spray paint in Pewter, Bronze, Chrome and I think one more. I want to paint all the interior knobs Satin Nickel, because to replace every door know would cost waaaay too much. From what I've read about the product should work great for your kitchen cabinet knobs. Just rough up the knob with some very fine sand paper, clean it off and spray away ;-)

    3. Yes, Paulette, I used Rust-Oleum. Also did a ceiling fan and bathroom light fixture with great results.

I did not tackle my door knobs - although I've seen them done. I purchased replacements from ebuliders.com at a price much better than the big box stores.

  3. There are plenty of paints for metal. I like to use a hammered finish because slight imperfections are less noticeable. I'm a terrible painter. lol Also be sure to sand lightly before painting to remove any surface coating or dirt. I painted all the gold doorknobs in my house. It worked great!

  4. I just did this in my mater bathroom. The ceiling and the over the mirror fixtures went from shiny brass to hammered metal black. With my new gray walls and pops of yellow...I love it! I also painted the legs of my vanity chair and recovered the seat and some metal candle holders.

  5. I couldn't afford new kitchen hardware, too many doors and drawers so I did the same thing painted all of them black. What a difference that coat of paint made! New hardware for no cost. I had to paint the hinges with a small brush very carefully but it's 5 years and it still looks good so it's a winner.
